Inquirers

Students who are inquirers have

natural curiosity to learn and are

inquisitive to gain knowledge

about new things .

How does inquiry look

like in a PYP Class-

room and at home ?

An inquirer shows a natural curi-

osity and seeks out answers to

questions. According to the In-

ternational Baccalaureate Prima-

ry years Program ( IB-PYP), in-

quirers nurture their curiosity,

developing skills for inquiry and

research. Inquirers learn inde-

pendently and with others show-

ing enthusiasm and sustaining their

love of learning throughout life.

(IBO, 2013)

How can parents help to

promote inquiry at

home?

Encourage your child to read

newspaper articles and bor-

row books from the library

which have their focus on the

unit of inquiry.

Show great enthusiasm when

you find your child inquiring

into a new concept.

Model being an Inquirer.

Seek the answers by re-

searching with your child

rather then simply telling

what you already know.

Use internet together with

your child to explore new

ideas and information.

Explore practical use of

math concepts in real life

situations: for example, use

of percentage in price tags,

use of decimals in money

and use of weight in differ-

ent products available in

the market.

In unit of Inquiry, grade 5 started with their new

unit about how Government systems influence the

lives of citizens. To begin, students researched

about the different government systems that are

followed in different countries of the world. They

did the jigsaw activity on a world map and identified

the government systems followed in different coun-

tries.

The students also started to inquire about the dif-

ferent branches of government and its functions.

They used the newspaper articles to develop a

deeper understanding about the functions of the

Indian Government. The students got the oppor-

tunity to develop their social and thinking skills

while doing the group activity of jig saw on a world

map.

Math

Students strengthening their math

concepts using “First In Math” Peer learning in Math

In Math, students learnt about Ratios and Propor-

tion. They developed the conceptual understand-

ing of the topic by solving many real life word prob-

lems involving ratios and proportion. They made

their own word problems for their peers to solve.

In groups, students started working on their Math

project for using ratios in mall and planning a birth-

day party. This project has given them the oppor-

tunity to make real life connections with the topic.

Students also worked on ‘First in Math’ to

strengthen their skills

English

Reading strategy of synthesizing

In English, grade 5 focussed on the topic of descrip-

tive writing. Students played different games like I

spy and mystery bag to understand the elements of

descriptive writing. They learned about the use of

adjectives and similes to enhance their descriptive

text. The students wrote descriptions on various

topics using the writing process and used different

graphic organizers to plan their writing. The stu-

dents applied their learning of language conventions

to make their piece of writing meaningful and in-

teresting.

In groups students focused on the reading strategy

of synthesizing

Students engaged in a session of inquiry with the teacher during Civilization unit.

Students learning about Egyptian civili-zation and mummy through an artefact.

Grade 4 inquired into past civilizations. They learnt

about different civilizations like Egyptian, Greek,

Roman, Mesopotamian, Aztec and Mayan through

G.R.A.P.E.S strategy. They connected the past civili-

zations with present day societies for the better-

ment of the future.

Math

Students arranging the manipulatives in

the form of an array Students working in groups.

Students learnt to show array through manipula-

tives. Students represented their learning visually

by placing the manipulatives to show the arrays

both vertically and horizontally. Using these manip-

ulatives help the students to understand the mathe-

matics concepts in a very meaningful way.

English

Students engaged in a narrative writing teacher modelling session.

Procedure for narrative writing with 5W’s chart, sensory chart and transition timeline.

Grade 4 learnt to write narrative writing using

5W’s, sensory chart and transition timeline.

The 5 W’s activity makes the student start thinking

about the questions starting with the words “Who,

What ,When , Why and Where”. These words

help the students to plan a narrative using con-

structivist inquiry approach and differentiated think-

ing.

Grade 3 had an end of unit exhibition on sustaina-

ble energy as part of their assessment. The children

spent a week doing extensive research before they

started to make their models. They made models

on Wind energy, Rain water harvesting, Hydro-

power, Solar power and Photosynthesis. They also

showcased their energy booklets and a fun robot-

project which focused on transformation of energy.

As a part of action, Grade 3 students made posters

on conservation of energy and presented it to the

grade 1 and 2 students in the form of a small role

play.

Math

Pizza Fractions Learning through manipulatives

Grade 3 explored fractions by using real life appli-

cations of a pizza slice. They made their own pizza

with fractions of ingredients given to them. Chil-

dren became very enthusiastic when involved in

this activity. Later, they went on to explore equiva-

lent fractions and also solved simple word prob-

lems.

English

Students brainstorming Students conferring and discussing

Grade 3 children have started their journey as little

authors. They were introduced to the ‘Writing Pro-

cess’ by the help of which they will be able write a

final story of their choice by the end of the year.

Most of the children are at step two of the pro-

cess- “The Drafting Stage” . This will be an ongoing

exercise while the other concepts in language will

be taught simultaneously.

Field Trip

Field Trip to a museum

Grade 3 went on a field trip to Visveswarya Indus-

trial and Technological museum . The purpose of

this trip was to let the children feel immersed in

the applications of science. They saw how sound

travelled from one end of the room to the other

and made connections with a cup experiment they

had done in school. During the trip they learnt

about the properties of light and its connection

between mirror and reflections

This trip helped the students to make connections

between their learning in the class and the models

Guest Lecture

Mrs. and Mr. Reddy talking about sustainability practices in school

While exploring the third Line of Inquiry on Sustaina-

ble energy practices, Managing Director Mr. Nagaraj

Reddy and Academic Director Ms. Lakshmi Reddy

addressed Grade 3 children on how SNIS as a school

practices sustainability at school in terms of deriving

all it’s electricity from solar panels. It was a highly

interactive session where the children were given

answers to all their questions. It also left children

with a sense of responsibility on a more personal

level. To make the session more experiential, after

the guest lecture, the students got an opportunity to

see the solar panels on the roof of the school.

Session on Safe and Unsafe touch

Workshop by Faith Foundation

Children from Grade 3 and above had a valuable

session by an NGO called Faith Foundation. The

session focused on Child safety in terms of how

and what it means to feel safe or unsafe in the pres-

ence of familiar and unfamiliar people and situa-

tions. The session was very interactive and made

the students understand the meaning of Safe and

Unsafe touch and what they should do if they feel

unsafe in any situation.

Students Celebrating ‘Wing Women’s Day’

Grade 2 has enjoyed and celebrated their way through their current Unit of Inquiry - CELEBRA-

TIONS!

As part of their Summative Assessment, they had to create and plan a new reason to celebrate. Af-ter much thought they decided to celebrate 'WING WOMEN'S DAY' - A celebration to acknowledge and thank the 'Aunties' who help them every day in school, right from breakfast, lunch, taking them to the washroom, photocopying worksheets, taking care of their small and big needs during the time they spend here. They are such an integral part of school life so grade 2 made it special for them by inviting the management and staff and expressed their love and gratitude for their 'Aunties' in a heartfelt way. It was a perfect display action taken by students, and a great end to a fun Unit.

Math

Students experimenting with Beads Students making equal copies of the beads - figuring out the concept of multi-plication

The basic idea of multiplication is repeated addi-

tion, which means the multiplication of two num-

bers is equivalent to adding it multiple times. The

students of Grade 2 are experimenting with the

concept of repeated addition using beads. Students

tried to find the connection between addition and

multiplication practically so that they understand

the concept better.

English

Students discussing during their Thinking Hat Activity

“De Bono's’ Thinking Hats activity was used by

Grade 2 .

The activity was used effectively in the English class-room to encourage students to use English in a creative way in developing speaking skills and to think out of the box away from their comfort zone. This activity helped the students to focus on brain

storming , discussions and debate.

Learners first worked with members of their own group, wearing the same colour hat, developing their role further by brainstorming words and ex-pressions. Then they presented their discussions with other hat groups; after which debates and

questions continued.

Grade 2 conducted their assembly on 14th of No-

vember, and it was an assembly to remember. The

theme was Kannada Rajyothsava. Grade 2 students

enacted a fictitious musical play called ‘Arunya –

The Fighter’, a tale of guts, glory and courage.

Loosely based on the real life historical story of

Kithoor Rani Chennamma , the play was enacted in

Kannada . The actors, all of 7 years of age, wowed

the audience, mesmerised them with their brilliant

dialogue delivery, expressions & stage presence and

received a standing ovation from the audience.

Learning Discipline

An interactive session with the School Counselor

We always work together as a team to ensure the

physical, emotional, social and psychological well-

being of our students. Ms Sangeetha Poomani, our

student counsellor had a session with Grade 2

about social behaviour, respect for each other,

discipline and usage of appropriate language. It was

a fun and interactive session with the students

while addressing various social, emotional and be-

havioural issues.

Fieldtrip to a vegetable farm Trip to “More” supermarket

Vegetables are grown in the farm and not in the

supermarket shelves!

Grade 1 has been learning about how food reaches our table. The field trip to the supermarket, farm and radish washing shed has been a learning expe-rience for our first graders as it enhanced their learning and provided them with an enriching expe-rience of how food is grown. They enjoyed collect-ing the vegetables and were amazed to see how the vegetables are loaded to reach the wholesale mar-

ket.

Watching the process of how the radish are washed in the machine was the highlight of the field trip. Our visit to the “More” supermarket gave them an opportunity to view various food items and also to see the different packaging material

used to pack the food.

Math

Our Tuck Shop Buy, Buy and Buy

Yes ... Math can be fun!

“Look at our tuck shop ... we have different food

products. Yes! We are integrating Math in our units

of inquiry “Farm to Table”.

“We used money to buy the food products from

the shop. We learnt how to add and subtract mon-

ey. We also recorded the amount spent at the tuck

shop by making a bill”. It was fun to use the fake

currency notes to buy the food products.

“We waited for our turn to buy things from the

shop!”

Guided Reading Program followed in Grade 1 to develop reading skills

Integrating differentiated small–group instruction

Guided Reading

Guided reading is an instructional approach that

involves a teacher working with a small group of

students who demonstrate similar read-

ing behaviours and can read similar levels of texts.

The text is easy enough for students to read with

support. The students follow the Oxford Reading

Tree series. Each level is colour coded and the

teacher begins by grouping students, then prompts,

encourages, and confirm how students apply prob-

lem-solving strategies as they read.

Junk food VS Healthy Food Survey

Junk food VS Healthy food Survey

Grade 1 conducted a survey to find out the choice

that was liked the most between healthy food and

unhealthy food. It was surprising to see the result

of the survey that was represented on the bar-

graph. The most liked food was healthy food. The

students also took action to follow healthy eating

habits which could be see into practice during the

lunch time.

Self– Reflection Time

Self– Reflection Time

Self-reflection is a type of self-assessment, and one

of the most significant learning tools we can model

for our students. Ultimately, we want our children

to be the self-assessors of their work and goals.

Grade 1 self evaluated and marked their results.

They were principled while they self evaluated

themselves and discussed how they could improve

on and work better to reach their goals.

Children’s Day

Happy Children’s Day!

This day was a time to rejoice as the students en-

joyed participating in fun games that were con-

ducted for Grade 1. A special assembly was organ-

ised to amuse and entertain the children on this

occasion. The show started with a heart-warming

song followed by a role play, dance, singing etc. The

students were ecstatic to spot their teachers

emerge from the classroom and take on these unu-

sual roles. Their constant cheering prompted the

teachers to put forward their best!

Shop Role Play

The topic studied was transportation. Children identi-fied and sorted out vehicles under various modes of transport for e.g.. airways, waterways and road ways. For identification of vehicles, children did a role play of toy shop where they used fake money to buy the toys

by naming it, thus also learning to identify Money.

They also explored people associated with various transport while learning about the safety precautions followed by each kind of vehicle. Post learning about vehicles, they also reflected on why we need transport, and depicted their understanding that vehi-cles or transport are not only used to travel but also used to carry goods, animals, or sick people. They looked at what are the good things about the current means of transport and also few ill effects like air & noise pollution and heavy traffic. Few children demon-strated ways to reduce these ill effects by talking

about car pooling and growing more trees.

Math

Students making a Pictograph to show how many girls and boys in class

Student exploring full & empty.

Grade K 2 was involved in an activity to learn

about Pictograph, Bar graph and also Time. They

counted the girls and boys in the class and drew

themselves in a chart to show pictorial representa-

tion. Same way for Bar graph, they counted differ-

ent kinds of trees in the campus and then repre-

sented them through a Bar graph. Children also

learnt about the concepts of full, half, empty, nearly

empty or full by pouring coloured water through

various measuring jars. They leant how to make 10

with different number combination using geomet-

rical materials

English
