WELCOME BACK TO A NEW SEASON OF
BOATING!
For those of us who call Marco Island home all year round, October has the feeling of
the beginning of a new year! Many of our snowbird members start returning to Marco
Island in October and we start to see the beginning of cooler weather. We all hope for
that first cool spell where we can finally open our windows and sliders after months of
being cooped up in air conditioning! There’s a new energy on the island as more people
come back and attend our different programs and classes. As this October starts, we
hope that you’ll commit yourself to supporting America’s Boating Club-Marco Island
by doing any of the following:
Volunteer for a position on the Executive Board
Volunteer to help out with an event, cruise or party
Take a class to improve your boating skills
Attend a boating activity
Come to a Captain’s Meeting at CJ’s
Have a Vessel Safety Inspection of your boat
Help out with the Wine and Hors d’oeuvres Party
Mentor a new member
The health and vibrancy of our club is dependent on the commitment of each of our
members to do what they can to support our mission of boating safe-
ty. We hope that all our members will help us achieve our mission
during this upcoming season.

THE EAGLE’S EYE EDITOR
Lt Marcy Marinelli, P
October signals the beginning of season on Marco Island and we are excited to welcome back our mem-bers who have summered up north. We’ve had a few members move away from Marco this summer but we have welcomed new members who have moved here. We’ve had a couple marriages to celebrate as well. Come to one of our events when you return to the island and see who and what is new in our club. If you haven’t taken one of our courses in awhile, plan to sign up for a course or seminar to improve your boating knowledge. We’ve got lots of opportu-nities for you to become involved in America’s Boat-ing Club-Marco Island!
Please let me know of anyone who is sick, injured or deceased. I will send a card in the name
of the squadron. AnnMarie Ryan
908-313-8357 [email protected]
SUNSHINE NEWS Please keep Katy Hart in your thoughts and prayers as she recovers from sur-gery at home. Also remem-ber John Noffze as he re-covers from shoulder sur-gery.
This has been an unusual summer so
far. All the rain has kept many of us off
the water. Covid is still hanging around
causing trouble. As we are trying to
find our way back to the new normal, it
feels like obstacles are thrown in the
way. Things are changing for all of us.
Let’s make it a more enjoyable, fun
time as we settle into the way things will be.
We finally got all the bank account signatures changed for
the current Bridge members.
We spent a lot of time this summer getting the details
worked out for the upcoming Fall and Winter Dinner Meet-
ings. We will be meeting at the Marco Island Yacht Club.
Our first meeting will be October 13, 2021. The menus we
selected will have something for everyone. It will be great
to see everyone again.
As our members return to Marco, I suggest that you check
the calendar and Eagle’s Eye for changes to our schedule.
The weather has been a large factor in the events we were
able to hold this summer.
Be sure and check out Ted’s column for the latest in courses
that will start as our members from distant locales return.
Look for Dorothy’s Dinner Meeting Flyer in this edition of
the Eagle’s Eye. Make your dinner selections and get your
money and choices into Dorothy early.
See you soon.
I started to think about my next
Eagle’s Eye article after just
getting home from a 9/11 Re-
membrance ceremony. This cer-
emony was for all community
citizens to attend to remember
those that perished on that day.
When leaving, I began to think
of how this ceremony was some-
what parallel to our Club.
The COVID pandemic is much like a terrorist attack
on the Club. It has stopped us from doing activities,
being able to socialize with members, and prevented
us from traveling freely. We cannot remain its’ vic-
tim.
This Fall we will begin in high spirits with many ac-
tivities and programs for fun, camaraderie, and a
good feeling to be a member of America’s Boating
Club-Marco Island.
There is something for everyone. Of course, we will
once again have on-the-water activities, luncheons,
Captain’s meetings, General membership meetings,
and safe boating classes, but we will be planning for
our first fundraiser in two years, the Wine & Hors
d’oeuvres Party.
Volunteers are needed today to fill in for the Market-
ing/Public Relations Chair and Safety Officer. If you
are willing to try, contact me. Volunteers are also
needed in every job to execute the Wine & Hors
d’oeuvres party. I will be having a meeting in early
October to explain the party and the many tasks that
need volunteers to successfully hold this event. Plan
on volunteering.
Cliff Winnings can accommodate a couple more peo-
ple to be part of his Co-op Charting program. You
get to be on the water, learn more about the waters
around Marco Island, and do a valuable service for
the City and County.
You do not need to have extensive experience on boats or the waters around the island to be a Vessel Safety Check (VSC) inspector. You will need to take a
class to know what to identify on boats of all sizes and pass a test, but the rewards are numerous. Keeping boaters safe on the water is a big part of our mission.

Our hot and muggy and rainy
Summer has morphed into our hot
and muggy and rainy Fall! In spite
of all the pandemic worries Ameri-
ca’s Boating Club—Marco Island
moves on. Just think, if you lived
full-time up north you would be
planning to get your boat shrink-
wrapped and up on the hard to
wait out another winter before launching in the Spring.
Lucky for us we can boat all year here in Paradise.
Soooo let’s go boating!! Take advantages of activities
planned such as the Cruise and Lunches, picnics, raft
ups and just getting together out on the water. Also
take advantage of the land activities such as Dinner
Meetings, CJ’s, Cards at the Condo. Come to the D22
Fall Conference and learn great stuff at the
Roundtables and meetings. All this is listed on our
website.
I want to welcome our member Past Marco Island
Yacht Club Commodore Ray Rosenberg, AP as the
MISPS Connect Coordinator. As you know, this pro-
gram links new members with established members.
Please see Ray’s article on page 13 in the newsletter
and volunteer to help. Without members ABClub-
Marco Island will cease to exist.
Speaking of new members, please welcome Miles Blunt.
He lives on Marco Island and is looking for education
classes and has skills in photography he would like to
share. A 20 foot NauticStar gets him out on the water.
He joined in August.
Tim Benincasa and Significant Other Jane Orsulak
joined in September. They are snowbirds from Ohio
and belong to Freedom Boat Club. Tim is a past active
member of Sandusky Power Squadron in Ohio, achiev-
ing 10 merit marks and grade of Advance Pilot. Pres-
ently they are building a home in Naples and plan to be
down in November.
Christopher Kimble also joined in September. He lives
on Marco Island and is involved with the company Hull
to Prop. He has a 20 foot power boat by the same
name. His credentials show a USCG Captain’s license
which gives him the grade of Advance Pilot.
We welcome all our new members!

Executive Officer Report, Cont. (from p. 5)
You are possibly the first person to talk to the boater
about our Club. You can be an extension of the mem-
bership committee. Contact Ted Reiss to take the VSC
class and John Salotto about becoming a VSC inspec-
tor.
I encourage all members to consider becoming in-
structors. All classes taught by us come from USPS
with a PowerPoint presentation to be used in the class-
room. With so many classes that we offer, we also
need many more instructors. The first few times you
teach in the classroom, another instructor will be
there to take on the hard questions. You are not alone.
Once again, contact Ted Reiss to learn more about
becoming an instructor.
Get in the swim of things and come to the meeting in
October, consider taking a class, and of course, volun-
teer in one or more of the many opportunities the
Club offers its’ members to help make boating safer.
EDUCATIONAL OFFICER
P/D/C Ted Reiss, SN-CN
Our Education program for the Fall
begins on 30 September with the first
session of the America’s Boating Course.
This will be followed by the two-hour
Advanced Powerboat Handling seminar
on 18 October and the first class of the
seven session Boat Handling course on
25 October. Space is still available for
each, so if interested in learning more
about boating please register with me. All classes will fol-
low the CDC guidance for temperature checks, distance
and face masks. The full education schedule for the Fall
and Winter is in the Eagle’s Eye on pages 15 –16 and on
our web site. Early registration is encouraged to insure
delivery of student manuals. One course not listed is Ma-
rine Electronics. This course can be scheduled in the Win-
ter and covers AC and DC components and circuits etc.
Let me know if you are interested.
Notice that not only are courses and seminars listed, but
also free use of the class-room Vessel Simulator and two on
-the-water training opportunities – Hands on Training
(HOT) and Jump Start. HOT provides guidance on how to
perform 25 boat operation skills leading up to the Boat Op-
erators Certificate. What is BOC? Ask me. The Jump
Start program is training on your boat or rental boat
aimed at specific aspects of boat handling you would like
help learning how to perform (like docking, anchoring
etc.). Is there some skill we can help you improve OR can
you help others improve a skill?
In what other areas of boating are you interested? If you
identify a topic I will find an instructor. Speaking of in-
structors, we need more certified instructors. A free In-
structor Development course is scheduled for December.
Certified instructors are needed for the America’s Boating
Course. During the training sessions you will practice in-
structing several of the many topics in the America’s Boat-
ing Course.
Another free seminar in December is Operations Training.
This session provides information on: the total organization
structure; history; purpose of national, district and squad-
ron levels; job description/function of squadron officers
and committees and how you fit into America’s Boating
Club – Marco Island. There is no better way to learn about
our organization.
A final thought, learning is
also an opportunity to meet
your fellow club members.
Let’s continue to learn, go
boating and stay safe.
VESSEL SAFETY INSPECTORS
As you get your boat ready to go back into the water
after being up north for the summer, don’t forget to
get your vessel safety check done. Here’s a list of our
certified VSC examiners. You can contact anyone on
this list and they will come out and give you a FREE
vessel safety check.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!
19
Two of our newest members of America’s Boating Club-Marco Island are partners
Jane Orsulak and Tim Benincasa. They will be moving from Ohio to be full-time resi-
dents in November when their new home at Hacienda Lakes in Naples is completed.
Both Jane and Tim are from Ohio. Jane hails from North Lima and Tim comes from
Alliance; both cities are in northeastern Ohio. Jane is originally from Elwood City a
small industrial town in Western PA but has lived in Washington, DC, VA and other
locales.
Jane earned a Computer Science degree at Indiana University of PA and then a Mas-
ter’s in System Engineering from George Mason University.
Jane’s career has spanned some 37 years primarily in the area of software and systems
engineering for Raytheon (the #2 Defense contractor in the world). She retired as a
Principal Engineering Fellow in 2018 and received many awards along that path. One
of which she is most proud is the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) where she re-
ceived the Spark award for Excellence in Mentoring in 2015.
Jane’s boating experience is currently limited to shallow river boating in the Allegheny River at her family’s cabin in Emlenton, PA, however she looks forward to learning a ton more through the MISPS. Her initial interests lie in co-operative charting, GPS sys-
tems/Electronic navigation, and of course small boat handling as well as the social as-pects (including playing cards). Jane looks forward to getting involved in ABC-MI and has appreciated the warm welcome!
Tim is a reinstated member of ABC having been was active in the Sandusky, OH Pow-
er Squadron. He earned his AP designation, took lots of elective courses and earned 10
merit marks. In addition, he has served as a P/Lt/C- Executive Officer on the Bridge.
He developed a custom member data base, membership handbook and worked on the
newsletter, The Watch, among other activities.
Tim’s boating experience and interests include 20 years of boating on the Great Lakes
mostly on Lake Erie- Sandusky Bay (OH) which was his home port. Power boating is
his passion having most recently owned a Tiara Inboard with twin screws which was
kept docked at the Sandusky Yacht Club known as the “T and A Express”. Tim was
also very active with this organization having served on various committees as well as
being a Trustee.
Tim went to the University of Cincinnati where he graduated with an Engineering de-
gree. He then completed an MBA from University of Chicago went to work for various
high-tech electronics companies such as Eaton Controls, Gould Electronics and others.
Tim has 3 daughters, Amy who is sales executive with a large pharmaceutical compa-
ny living in the Chicago area, Emily who is a therapist living in Mentor, OH and Vic-
toria, a fashion designer living in San Francisco. Besides boating Tim also enjoys E-
biking, Wine Tasting, Ham Radio (WA8OML), Woodworking and Theater.
Tim is proud to be associated with MISPS and looks forward to becoming an active
member along with Jane.
