It was inalgebra we firstlearned thetheorem,Knockouts =Masterpoints. You want to winmasterpoints, play knockouts. In the bracketedknockouts, youare placed with16 teams ofsimilar ability. Ifyou make it

through two rounds, there is a big payoff. If this is your first NABC, looking at the daily

schedule can be confusing. We have teams, pairsand. . . what the heck is board-a-match?

The scoring in these events is completelydifferent and so is the strategy. In pairs, for themost part, you receive one point for every pairsitting your direction that you beat and one-half forevery pair you tie. These are called matchpoints, and at the end of the day, the pair with the mostmatchpoints wins.

In Swiss teams and knockouts, the scoringsystem is by IMPs (International Matchpoints).Look at the bottom of the convention card and youwill see the IMP scale. Let’s say you bid 4♥ andmake plus 420. Say the opponents at yourteammates’ table aren’t nearly as astute and end upin 3♥, making four, for plus 170. When youcompare with your teammates, you will have plus250 for your side. You look at the IMP scale andsee that a difference of 250 is worth 6 IMPs. Soyou give your team plus 6 IMPs. Each board iscompared in the same way.

In knockout teams, your score is by IMPs only.If you are playing Swiss teams, at the end of

each match, the tournament director will convertyour team’s IMP score to victory points (you canfind the victory point scale on team scorecards). Aboard-a-match event is played somewhat like apairs game but each board is played as a match. Ifyou do better than the other pair on a board, youget one point. If they do better, you get zero. If the

score is the same, each side receiveshalf a point. You probably won’t playmany board-a-match games until yougain more experience.

IMP strategyGames: bid the safest game. At

matchpoints, you may get a markedlybetter score for playing in notrumpinstead of a major or in a major insteadof a minor. IMP scoring, however, neutralizes the differences betweenthese contracts. Your best strategy is tochoose your best (longest) trump fitand bid the game that’s most likely tomake, even if it’s 5♣ instead of 3NT.At matchpoints, you would have to puta gun to my head to play five of aminor instead of 3NT (my partnershave done that for other reasons), butin teams, do it if it’s safer.

If you’re not vulnerable, don’tstretch too far to bid a close game – theodds favor bidding only those gamesyou are reasonably sure will make.

If you’re vulnerable, it pays to be alittle more optimistic when you’re considering athin game. The IMP odds (your potential gain ifthe contract makes) favor bidding any game thathas even a 40% chance of making.

Part scores: look for the safest part score.Don’t worry about searching for a few extra pointsby playing in notrump instead of a minor.

Overcalls: matchpoint players often make lightovercalls, but at IMPs they should be solid. At theone level, you should have a good suit, and at thetwo level a full opener and a good suit.

Competing and balancing: Don’t be too bold.Unless you have a good suit and good hand, let theopponents play in their low-level contracts, especially if you’re vulnerable.

Doubles: there’s little to gain and much to loseby making a penalty double of a close contract, especially a partscore.

The playOvertricks: when you’re declarer, don’t risk

your contract trying to make an overtrick. Alwayschoose the safest line of play to make your

contract, even if it might cost you an overtrick ortwo. An optimist sees the glass half full, apessimist sees it half empty and a bridge playerplaying teams sees it cracked with water runningout the bottom. Expect the worst and play safe tomake the contract. If you lose by 1 IMP, don’t callme.

Opening leads: be cautious about trying for aswing with an unusual opening lead. In the longrun, it’s usually best to make your normal lead.

Defense: be optimistic and fairly aggressivewhen defending the opponents’ contracts. If there’sa layout of the cards that will result in a set, chooseyour leads and plays to cater to that possibility, even if it means you may give up an overtrick ifyou’re wrong.

Tomorrow: Matchpoint strategy. The author, who lives in Danvers MA, is

director of bridge services for World WinnerBridge (formerly ACBL Online). He is an ACBL-accredited teacher and club manager. He is alsoformer president of the Eastern MassachusettsBridge Association.

Allen is also highly competent and always eagerto prove herself. A case in point occurred in late2001, when Whitesides, who lives in Dallas, wasscheduled to run a sectional tournament inBeaumont in far southeast Texas. Whitesidescouldn’t make it because getting around by airplanewas still difficult after the terrorist attacks.

Someone called Allen, who was nine hoursaway in Harlingen. She and Bert jumped in their carand drove to Beaumont, where Doris ran thetournament by herself. One of the tournamentorganizers wrote to ACBL Headquarters praisingAllen for her willingness to intercede in the crisis —and for her skill in managing the tournament on herown.

To Allen it was just another challenge met andovercome. “I love people,” she said, “and I want tomake them happy.”

Jim RobisonToday’s Strati-Flighted Open Pairs are named

in memory of Jim Robison who died last week.ACBL Grand Life

Master and WorldChampion Jim Robisondied in his hometown ofLas Vegas NV on Mar.27. Robison’s deathcame fromcomplications sufferedfrom a serious stroke heexperienced in the fall of2005. He was 63.

Robison was aprofessional bridge andpoker player. His bridge titles included the 2004World Senior Cup (Istanbul), the North AmericanSwiss Teams (1979, 1990), the Reisinger Board-a-Match Teams (1984), the Open Pairs (1985) and theNABC+ IMP Pairs (1998).

He had five second-place finishes in national-level contests, including the 2005 VanderbiltKnockout Teams. Robison’s masterpoint total of17,218 placed him 78th on the list of all-timemasterpoint holders.

Expert Allan Falk said, “Most people know Jimwas a first rate cash game and video poker playerand an extraordinarily talented bridge player. Fewerare aware that Jim was once on the verge ofbecoming a professional golfer, after a collegiatecareer as a leading member of the then-dominantOhio State University team that included JackNicklaus.

“Once you got to know Jim, which notinfrequently required a certain level ofpachydermatousness, he was amusing, witty, intelligent, charming, a brilliant raconteur, a booncompanion, a ferociously competitive partner, andyet he could be vexing, annoying (most often byturning out to be entirely correct about somecontrary position) and amusingly insulting. But,achieving what the title character in the classicgangster film “Little Caesar” never could, Jim coulddish it out and take it as well, always with a laugh, whether on himself or someone else. Mike Passellonce remarked that if Jim could only learn to bid,he’d easily be the best bridge player in the world, which is a scary thought in a lot of ways.

“Known among his friends as ‘Robo’ or ‘TheRobinator,’ Jim was fun to be around, at or awayfrom the table, and he had a remarkable talent forbringing out the best in people — usually becausethey were working extra hard to prove him wrong

about something! He will be sorely missed as aplayer, a friend, and a presence.”

Robison is survived by his wife, Carol Pincus, another world-class player with multiple NABCtitles.

Winkle, Winkle Little StarThe stars of the North American Pairs, Flight A,

were District 18’s Gordon Campbell and PiotrKlimowicz who won the contest that endedThursday evening. On this deal from the secondqualifying session, the winners earned most of thematchpoints in the auction, and Campbell put theicing on the cake as declarer by uncovering a rareplay — a winkle — to earn the maximum number oftricks for his side.

The defense began with three rounds of hearts,Campbell ruffing high. He then played three roundsof trump ending in dummy, discovering that Westbegan with three clubs, East one.

From the bidding, it seemed likely that East hada 2=5=5=1 pattern, since with 3=5=4=1 she mighthave doubled instead of bidding 2♦ on the secondround.

So Campbell played a spade to the king. If Eastducked with a putative A–x, she could later beendplayed in diamonds.

West won the trick with the ace, however, andexited with a diamond. Campbell played low fromdummy and East won the queen. The heartcontinuation was ruffed by declarer to leave thisending:

♠ 9 7♥ — ♦ A J♣ —

♠ J 8 ♠ Q♥ — ♥ 2♦ 6 4 ♦ K 9♣ — ♣ —

♠ 10 3♥ — ♦ 10♣ 7

Once West had shown up with ♠A, it was clearthat East had started with the doubleton queen;Campbell could visualize the entire layout. Althoughit appears that he has two spade losers, the lasttrump forced the defense to abandon one of itswinners. This is the nature of a winkle: it’s aspecialized type of squeeze in which the defenders

are forced to choose between being forced to leadinto a tenace or unblocking one of its potentialwinners.

On the last club, West was forced to part with adiamond since a spade discard would allow declarerto play a spade next, crashing the queen and jack. Aspade was discarded from dummy. East was alsounder pressure, since a heart discard would allowdeclarer to exit with a spade to the queen. Eastwould then be forced to lead a diamond from theK–x into dummy’s A–J. East, therefore, had todiscard the ♠Q on the last trump.

Campbell then cashed the ♦A, stripping West ofhis last card in that suit, and played a spade toWest’s jack. The last trick was declarer’s.

Down one, but a terrific matchpoint score.

Second in the North American Pairs, Flight A, wereHenry Lortz and Wayne Ohlrich of Seattle WA.

Everyone knows the old joke “How do you getto Carnegie Hall?” “Practice, constant practice!”Not everyone knows the easy way to play in theNorth American Pairs at the NABC: arrive oneminute before the evening session of the qualifier asa spectator and meet Mark Bartusek whose partnerdid not turn up.

While we scored enough to advance to thesecond day, we knew we were not eligible for thefinal, so there was no pressure on us at all. Here aresome of the more interesting deals we encountered.

This is a tough deal for East-West. With aneight-card and a seven-card major fit, both featuringa near solid six-carder in one hand, which suitshould you play in? Right, the seven-card fit.

4♥ is almost sure to be defeated. 4♠ has 10tricks.

The defense to 4♥ is fun, too. At the table, theNorth player defended the heart game by cashingtwo top clubs to discover the position in that suit. Then he meanly shifted to spades, disruptingdeclarer's entries to dummy. (He was helped by thefact that South had given suit preference for thehigher of the remaining suits — spades anddiamonds — on the second high club.)

Declarer had a choice of unattractive plays.Though he could pitch one diamond loser on thespades, the third round of spades would get ruffed -from the short trump holding to boot. But leading adiamond after two rounds of spades was equallyineffective.

Minus 100 was worth only 5 matchpoints out of35 for East-West.

Coincidentally the next two deals (rotated forconvenience) also featured entry-disrupting plays in

the spade suit.Dlr: South ♠ A J 8 5Vul: None ♥ 8 7 6

The defense started with two top clubs. Declarerruffed, led a spade to the jack, played a diamond tothe queen, then drew all the trumps. The ♠Q wentto the king and ace, followed by a second diamondplay. East followed impassively with the jack, butdeclarer after due reflection put up the ♦K and hadplus 450 for a 75% board.

Notice the difference if West alertly flies withthe ♠K at trick three, blocking the spade suit.

Declarer takes the ace and leads a diamond tothe king, but can't get back to dummy for a seconddiamond play. All he can do is duck a diamond. Eastwins the ♦J and pumps declarer with a third club.Declarer ruffs and gives up another diamond - eventhough West gets to pitch now, there is nothing thedefense can do since even if East had a fourth club, the tap could be taken in dummy. Plus 420 would beaverage because quite a few pairs missed game withthe North-South cards At least East-West could beproud they had done their best.

And finally, there was this deal (see nextcolumn):

North-South climbed to 4♥ after anundisciplined auction: Playing New Minor Forcingmaybe North has just enough to stretch to 3♥(?).The final contract is unedifying but not without play(despite the 4-1 trump split) because of the spadespots.

On a trump lead to the king and East's 9, the

obvious play (if East has short hearts) is to run the ♠J, covered all round. Now declarer can simplydraw trumps and run the ♠9 for 10 tricks. So isthere a defense? Yes, but an unlikely one.

Consider an alternative defense — the tap. Westleads a diamond and declarer must duck it and winthe next. He then advances the ♠J covered by theking and ace. South now leads the ♥J and anotherheart and can't be stopped from using the ♣A as anentry after drawing trumps to run the ♠9.

What about this: after the diamond lead andcontinuation, when declarer plays the ♠J fromdummy, try ducking! Say declarer reverts to trumps, leading the ♥K, ducked all round, and a heart to thejack, also ducked. In this ending, West wins thethird heart and plays a diamond:

Disagreement as to theNumber of Tricks WonThere are several issues that arise when the

sides involved dispute the number of tricks won bythe declarer. These issues revolve around questionsregarding how disputes are settled and the correctprocedure to follow when there is an error intabulating the score.

Law 65 deals with the arrangement of tricks. Itstates that at the end of each trick, the players turnthe cards they played face down on the table. If aplayer’s side won the trick, he points the card heplayed at his partner. If the opponents won the trick,he points the card he played in their direction. Eachplayer is responsible for arranging his played cardsin an orderly overlapping row in the sequenceplayed so as to permit a review of the play after itscompletion, if necessary, to determine the number oftricks won by each side or the order in which thecards were played. A player who fails to followcorrect procedure as stated above or whoprematurely mixes his cards loses the right to claimownership of doubtful tricks or to claim a revoke.

I remember a player in my area who alwaysarranged his cards into two piles, winners andlosers. If ever the day had come when he and hisopponents did not agree on the outcome of a hand,he would have lost all doubtful tricks.

So a good rule of thumb is not to disturb theorder of your played cards until the result has beenagreed up by all four players. If agreement cannotbe reached, a review of the tricks is then possible. This also helps when there is a possibility of arevoke by one of the players. If the tricks are in theexact order that they were played, a review of thetrick in question is possible. Of course, in cases of apossible revoke or a disagreement as to the numberof tricks won, the director should be called toprotect the rights of all concerned.

Even if we follow procedure to the letter, disagreements may arise subsequently to a scorebeing recorded and/or posted. When that happens, whether the error is on the part of the players inagreeing on the result, or on the part of the scorebeing recorded incorrectly either by a player or adirector, it is still possible to make a correction. The

law that covers this situation is 79C. It states that“an error in computing or tabulating the agreed-upon score, whether made by a player or scorer, may be corrected until the expiration of the periodspecified by the sponsoring organization. Unless thesponsoring organization specifies a later time, thiscorrection period expires 30 minutes after theofficial score has been made available forinspection.”

As players, we have responsibility to inspect ourscore when they have been posted to ensure that wehave received the scores we earned in that session. When an error has been made, whether it is in ourfavor or against it, we must contact a director andensure that the score is corrected in a timely fashion. In most cases, the grace period for a correction istypically greater than 30 minutes. At the NABCs,for example, you usually will have up until the startof the next session of play in your event (unless theerror occurred in the last session of the last day ofthe tournament).

As you can see, this makes it important that youkeep a private score. If there is a dispute, yourprivate score is one way of protecting your equity. When you notice an error, contact a director andapprise him of the problem prior to the end of thecorrection period. If the error involves a directorentering the wrong score in the machine, it is easy toget a correction made. If a player has recorded thescore incorrectly and his opponents have approvedthe score as recorded, realizing later that it was notthe score they agreed upon or if they realize laterthat they did not agree upon the right result, achange is still possible, but a little morecomplicated. When a correct score ticket has beenturned in and one of the pairs involved realizes thatthey agreed upon the right number of tricks, theother side must agree to the change in score beforeit can be made. In some cases the director need notgrant an increase in score once the round in whichthe error occurred has ended. For example, if thescore from a Swiss match is reversed by the directordoing the scoring, and the team who won the matchdoes not point out the error immediately in thehopes of getting more favorable pairings, thedirector should not grant an increase in score in alater round. He should correct the other team’s total, but not the team that turns in the error belatedly. This reflects the fact that the team captain’sresponsibility is to make sure that his team’s scorehas been recorded accurately.

Ruling the GameDeclarer can still succeed. He ruffs the third

diamond in dummy, creating a trump trick for West, but pitches a club loser from hand. Now he passesthe ♠9 and has an answer for everything the defensecan do.

So declarer wins, right? No! There is a defense.West must lead a diamond and declarer must duck it(if he takes it and plays a spade, the defense has theentry to get a spade ruff, then can sit back and waitfor their club). East overtakes, and at trick two mustshift to a club.

Declarer does best to put in the 9, covered bythe 10. If he declines to win this in dummy, thedefense must revert to diamonds (the ♣K exit iscute, but it doesn't work; declarer can eventuallymaneuver a black-suit squeeze against East!).

The ♦A wins, then when declarer leads the ♠Jfrom the table, East ducks, and declarer's goose isfinally cooked. West wins the third round of trumps, gives up a ruff-and-discard, and now the entries tothe North hand are not good enough to pick up thespades.

Tournament Terminology 101

If you’re confused by the terms used todescribe the different types of bridge eventsplayed at clubs and tournaments, you’re notalone. Here’s a list of common bridge events withexplanations.

Knockout Teams: an event in which a team(of four, five or six players – with four playing ata time) plays another team. The losers areeliminated or “knocked out” while the winnersplay other winners until only one winning teamremains.

The length of a KO match may vary from asingle session to a full day (the Vanderbilt andSpingold) to a multi-day event (the BermudaBowl).

Bracketed Knockout Teams: a KO event inwhich teams are divided into groups – usually of8, 16 or 32 teams – based on their masterpointholdings. The top group – Bracket I – and all othergroups compete in a separate event with their ownset of winners.

Compact Knockout Teams: a shorter versionof Bracketed KO teams.

Swiss Teams: an event in which a team (offour, five or six players – with four playing at atime) plays other teams in seven-, eight- or nine-board matches. Team A sits North–South at Table1 and East–West at Table 2 while Team B sitsEast–West at Table 1 and North–South at Table 2.The results are compared and scored byInternational Match Points (IMPs).

Pairings for the first round are random.Pairings for succeeding rounds are determined bya team’s win-loss record or Victory Point total.

International Match Points (IMPs): themost common method of scoring Swiss Teammatches. Scoring example: if Team A scores plus620 for bidding and making 4♠ on a particulardeal and Team B scores only plus 170 (they didn’tbid the game), the difference is 450 – whichconverts to 10 IMPs. The IMP chart is shown onthe inside of your convention card.

Victory Points (VPs): a method of scoringSwiss Team matches. After the scores arecompared and converted to IMPs, the IMP total isconverted to Victory Points. A team’s VP totalmay be used to determine its next opponents andits final standing.
