Love of Convertibles

The exhilaration of wind on your face, peddle to the metal at breakneck speeds, the rumbling of glass packs bouncing

off the hills and the roar of the engine, can change a person’s life!

My Grandfather, a successful osteopathic doctor in the Yakima Valley of Washington State, unwound from his busy

schedule by cruising along miles of apple orchards, hop farm lands and into the pristine mountain ranges of Mt.

Rainer National Forest. It was near Bumping Lake, that he found tranquil refuge amongst the tall pines and trout

laden streams.

At the cabin, I recall my father and he, reminiscing over good family memories and telling jokes with a cold beer in

hand. They’d laugh and hike around, pointing out potential trees to fall for campfires and cook stoves. Over the

decades, the T-Bird transported them back and forth from reality to relaxing leisure weekends.

“Our Bird” has been a steadfast partner in the adventures of our family. Grandfather, a flashy trendsetter, purchased

the Bird off the showroom floor. This ’56 was fully loaded with continental package, town and country radio, wide

white walls, hard top and tonneau cover. The gun metal grey exterior remains intact today. As a survivor, the car has

been maintained by my father and beloved mechanics along the way. Two extra-ordinary car friends, Bud Seeley and

Tom LaVack generously transported our Bird from Portland to Sun City. They’ve given me valuable advice on car

maintenance and the necessity to drive her regularly.

Within the last several years, repairs have enhanced her drivability. A new radiator, water pump and bypass plate

with new gaskets, rebuild of a telescopic steering column, new turn signal switch, and the addition of an upgraded

radio system.

Last fall we completed construction on a garage addition to house. Now she’s got a nest of her own and a new car

hoist to tighten things up and keep an eye on fluid leaks. I aspire to keep the car in fine working order, making my

Grandfather and Father proud.

In the future, our ’56 will need support, but for now as my preferred driver, she fly’s along like a dream!
