Kens Pen Dear Bethany Family, This upcoming Reformation Day marks the 500th anniversary of an event that is often con- sidered a major catalyst of the Reformation. On October 31, 1517, a Roman Catholic monk named Martin Luther posted a document con- taining 95 theses to the door of All Saints Church in Wittenberg, Germany. Luther s theses presented deep concerns about unbiblical prac- tices within the church, which were repudiating the gospel itself. With courage and conviction, Luther and the reformers who came after him— men like Ulrich Zwingli and John Calvin—stood unflinching in the face of ridicule and persecu- tion to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints(Jude 3). The Five Solasof the Reformation show the huge importance of that time of gospel recovery in church history, reminding us that we too must be diligent to stand firm upon the pure gospel of Gods grace in Jesus Christ. Sola Scriptura, So- la Gratia, Sola Fide, Solus Christus, Soli Deo Gloria: We must be sure to be a people who stand under the authority and upon the firm foundation of Scripture alone. The Sacred Writ- ings are able to make one wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. We must be sure to be a people who boldly declare that a person is saved by Gods grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. And we must be sure to be a people who rejoice and declare that this infinitely extravagant gift of salvation in Christ, revealed in the pages of Gods Word, is solely to the eternal praise and glory of our thrice-holy and gracious God. The Reformation is as im- portant today as it was 500 years ago. As we think about these things, we should thank God for how He has moved in and through the lives of men like Martin Luther. We will watch the movie, Luther, in the Fellowship Hall, at 6:30 p.m., Sunday, October 29. (This film is rated PG-13. If you have questions about the reasons for this rating, you can find the in- formation on pluggedin.com.) Feel free to bring your supper if you wish to eat during the movie. Popcorn and drinks will be provided. This film is a well-done presentation of Luthers life, and I m sure we will find it a blessing to view it together. Soli Deo Gloria!
