On Saturday, June 21st people of all ages enjoyed fun in the sun, at the 5th Annual Summer Bash at Open Gate Community Church, located at 9821 McCombs, in North-east El Paso. Each year the church holds this event in conjunction with their Mobile Food Distribution, in partner-ship with El Pasoan’s Fighting Hunger Food Pantry.

The children enjoyed sev-eral water slide jumping bal-loons, an obstacle course, games inside and out, and a dunking booth. Children and adults alike had the oppor-tunity to show their skill in hitting the little paddle with a ball and dunking differ-ent leaders from the church. They were most excited when Pastor Bill Belgie took his turn in the tank, and quickly the line grew!

Two Hundred individuals/families registered in advance for the food distribution. The church paid for half of the food that was given away, and

El Pasoan’s Fighting Hunger, through a grant (for frozen food), was able to donate ap-proximately half as well. Each registered participant was given bags of groceries in-cluding canned goods, dry goods, meat, vegetables and frozen items, totaling at least $70.

While there the partici-pants were also able to enjoy

hot dogs, chips, snow cones, cupcakes, water and soda. Local Christian band, “Never Too Late” provided live en-tertainment.

To prepare, adults and youth from the church went ahead of time to the food bank and bagged up 200 bags of the canned and dry goods. Then at a later time they re-ceived the frozen items that were granted from the food bank.

Open Gate Church started this Summer Bash and Food Distribution as a means to kick off the summer and to tell any who attend about their upcoming Vacation Bi-ble School program. Another purpose of the event is to give them a chance to mix togeth-er the families that are part of their church, of their day care – Wee Day Care, and folks that come for each of their food distributions. This gives all the children and adults a chance to mingle with each other and no one feels left out or out of place. Everyone is included no one ever feels ex-cluded. It also gives folks who are not part of the church a

chance to come and enjoy and get involved. “We enjoy doing this, as it reminds us about serving others.” Pastor Bel-gie stated, “People don’t just

come and get their food and leave like most would think. They come, they mingle, they enjoy all there is and tend to stay for the day.”

groups can run their own drive, in which case pro-motional materials will be given to you, and pick up of all shoes at the end of your drive will be arranged. See contact info below to make arrangements.

Or, if you can’t arrange to be a drop off site but would like to donate shoes you may do so during August at: Lifeway Christian Store, at 1319 George Dieter; and the El Paso Baptist Association, at 2012 Grant Avenue; dur-ing regular business hours.

The drive will focus on el-ementary aged children. So,

we are asking for donations of new, sturdy, school dress code appropriate, boys and girls; young men and young women, shoe sizes from 1-7 (including half sizes).

Also, here is a link to our SFOS web site: http://www.shoesfororphansouls.org/ The difference in our drive is that instead of sending shoes to Dallas; shoes col-lected locally will stay in El Paso.

Please, feel free to contact

me with any questions you might have.

Because challenges come our way daily, we must learn to be creative in dealing with issues. Trouble forc-es us to do some things we have never done before. For many, challenges and dead ends have turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

Creativity, our character quality for July, is defined as the ability to make new things or think of new ideas. There is a saying that goes, “to reach your destination, you must sail away from the shore.” In other words, to get a desired result, you must leave what you know is safe and be willing to go where you haven’t gone before.

Walt Disney was quoted as saying “We keep mov-ing forward, opening new doors, and doing new things because we’re curious…and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”

The opposite of being creative would be being un-imaginative. Instead of stay-ing stagnant and perhaps boring, creativity can spice up your life. Being creative

in business produces joy, greater efficiency and more income.

Here are our building blocks to pursuing creativ-ity:

Start where you are. Look for little ways to do the things you have always done differ-ently. Ask yourself what is the first thing that you need to change or what needs up-dating?

Work with a notebook, poster board or list. One au-thor suggests spending time everyday “thinking”. If you don’t slow down to think, be an observer. Connect the dots and write. You need to process because life has a tendency to f ly by.

Give it a try. Stretch your creative muscles. Trying new things is really fun and can lead you to discover new and better methods and prod-ucts. This could also lead to meeting new and interesting people.

According to one study, eight in ten people feel that creativity is critical to economic growth and two-

thirds believe creativity is valuable to society. Yet, only one in four said they were living up to their own cre-ativity. When people don’t try, not only do they lose, but we miss out on what they might have accomplished!

Actor Kevin Costner said this about failing. “I have failed before, and failing, I think, is an underrated ex-perience in America. People are so afraid of failing they don’t want to even try.” In-deed, the worst enemy of cre-ativity could be self-doubt.

Here’s your best tip.“Call to Me and I will an-

swer you AND I will tell you great and mighty things, WHICH YOU DO NOT KNOW.” Jeremiah 33:3

Are there some things you would like to know? Do you need to be creative? Your best response would be to ask God, seek and knock un-til that door is open for you.

Good for you. Good for our El Paso community.

Legacy Luncheon will be August 13.

Questions are sent to 42 Christian Leaders and all that respond by deadline are published. Those that come in late will be included with the others on The Messenger’s blog site at http://hismessenger.wordpress.com. If you are a Christian Leader and would like to be considered to join this panel – OR - if you have a question you would like answered by Christian Leaders, please email your contact information to [email protected].

No questions came in in time to get responses prior to deadline. However, I have once again been hearing much talk and concern regarding Angels – so I thought it would be a good time to rerun these responses to the question that originally ran in the August 8, 2013 issue.

Question:Are the angels in heaven

people that have died and turned into angels or were they created to be and always been angels?

Answers:

The Bible uses common words to communicate to man-kind. We have a tendency to create special meanings and even exclusively “heavenly” meanings. Angel means “one sent” or “messenger.” The an-gels of God are heavenly beings and their existence supersedes mankind. Since they are to be with God in heaven, it was an easy transfer in poems and lit-

erature to see mankind as like beings, or angels, when we get to heaven.

Christians will be given “heavenly” bodies in eternity, but will not be angels. 1 Cor 15:52 “For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.” NIV

Scripture says Christians will be judges over angels. “Do you not know that we will judge an-gels?” 1 Cor 6:3. We don’t un-derstand all there is to know about angels. We become in-trigued because it is a mystery.

Charles Clodfelter, EvangelistChurch of Christ in Eastwood

(El Paso, TX)

Awesome question. Simply put, angels were created. We find in the Bible that Satan was a created Angel and duties as-signed to him. Angels appear in the Bible as messengers of God (ex. Gabriel, Michael, and the Angel of Revelation) all cre-ated. Individuals that pass on from this earth are appointed to their proper place until the Day of Judgment (Luke 16:24.25; Romans 14:12). Also, we find in the book of Revela-tion 6:9-11) John, sees those that were tormented beneath the throne of God. As far as the saints becoming angels, the Bi-ble declares that we will not be angels, but we (the Saints), will become like God (characteristi-cally, but not God) 2 Corinthi-ans 3:18; 1John3:2.

Mark A. Rawlins, DirectorEl Paso International School of Faith

(El Paso, TX)

There is no evidence in the Bible that angels are humans who have died and then gone into the service of God in a second life. Rather, angels are spiritual beings created by God to serve Him. We find angels intervening in human events to notify certain persons whom God has selected and to influ-ence them (see the story of Manoah, the father of Samson, in Judges 13). In the New Tes-tament angels announce God’s soon-to-be realized plans. They direct His chosen human agents to participate in those plans. See the story of Joseph, in Matthew 1 or Zechariah in Luke 1. The intervention of an-gels helps God’s chosen humans to make the right decisions -- decisions that please God and are in accord with His plans to bless many. Indeed the writer of Hebrews claims, “Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?” (1:14).

Pastoral Assistant Paul DuerksenSt. Paul’s United Methodist Church

(Las Cruces, NM)

Angels are created as minis-tering spirits sent to minister to those receiving salvation - He-brews 1:14. Hollywood came up with the idea that dead people would be sent back to influence those who are living. And to possibly earn their wings.

Cute - but not true as far as the Scriptures are concerned.

Pastor Fred GrenierFirst Church of the Nazarene

(El Paso, TX)

Angels are created spiri-tual beings who have been in existence before the creation of man. They were created to serve the Father but also hu-manity. They were created as spirits (Colossians 1:16, Psalm 104:4) and not flesh,

so they dwell in the dimen-sion of the spiritual realm and not the physical realm. We know that they are not physical, because if they were, we could see them. We know they were created before man, because Sa-tan who was an angel tempted Adam and Eve. He and a third of the created angels were cast down from heaven because of their sin, prior to the creation of man. Since angels are not human, they can never experi-ence salvation.

Humans will never be angels but we will live in the presence of angels for eternity. When we die, our physical bodies will be laid down, and we will exist in the spiritual realm, being able to see these angels who are all around us.

May God bless you,

At The Father’s

FeetOld Age:

Bringing Forth Spiritual Fruit

Good Day Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Old age is not an in-dication that the Lord is finished using us for His service. Too many times the elderly either “retire” from positions of service or just feel inadequate to serve the Lord so they quit doing so. Some of these feelings may be under-stood due to the way the elderly are sometimes shut out of opportunities; how-ever, the Lord has never closed the door on the el-derly who may desire to serve Him. Young people may have more energy and strength than the el-derly, but those of old age are able to honor God and bring forth spiritual fruit for Him in also. There is no “retirement” from serv-ing the Lord.

As an elderly per-son, formal positions in a church may be difficult for you; yet, continue to serve the Lord and reap spiri-tual fruit as you are able!

“They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green.” (Psalm 92:14 - NIV)

Old Age:Our Source of Strength

As old age creeps into our lives, our strength and power generally crawl out. We may desire to continue serving the Lord, but it becomes harder and harder physically. Even the strongest people get tired at times, so it cannot be expected for us who are advancing in age to avoid a loss of strength. Those of us who are genuine Christians have an advan-tage over unbelievers; our God’s power and strength never weakens and is al-ways available to us as our source of strength. Aging is a natural part of our lives, loss of strength, pow-er and energy go along with the aging, and when we feel we can go no longer be of service, remember that we can call on God to renew our strength.

If your strength is be-ginning to wane, turn to the greatest source of strength available: God!

“He gives strength to the weary and in-creases the power of the weak.” (Isaiah 40:29 - NIV)

May God Richly Bless You Today
