Origins and Diaspora; The Amistad Movement… The continent of Africa has provided the setting for the beginning of the human race. All humans on Earth can trace their origins back 7 million years to Africa. In short, Africa gave the world human civilization. At Sojourner Truth Middle School, scholars are exposed to the greatness of Africa and its connection to the United States through the mass migration of men and women upon The Amistad. Truth Middle School’s Kings and Queens study these early human migration patterns from Africa. Scholars also extend their knowledge about Africa by constructing Egyptian Pyramids and sarcophagi, in addition to analyzing the cultures and achievements of great African Empires. An individualized connection to their learning is made when scholars create family trees to trace their own lineage. Sojourner Truth Middle School has also dedicated a showcase area within their school to highlight some of the cultural influences that Africa has shared with America. “Learning about The Amistad, African cultures and achievements, and making connections to who we are today is how Truth reveals the truth about truth!”, states Dr. Monica Burton, Principal of Sojourner Truth Middle School. 1 Affordable Internet at Home for Eligible Households.
