The more we learn about the brain, the more concerning we realize concussions are. If a person breaks an arm, pulls a muscle, or tears a ligament, it can be bad, but it is nowhere near as serious as injuring the brain. After all, a single injury to the brain can paralyze, cripple, or lay waste to the entire body! Brain injuries are enormously serious. God knew what He was doing when He compared the church to a "body" (Romans 12:4f; 1 Corinthians 12:26f; Colossians 1:17f). New Testament Christians make up the different parts of this body. Sadly, sometimes the parts of this body become injured. They can become spiritually weak. They can become paralyzed and inactive. Worst of all, some parts of this body are even amputated. However, unlike our physical bodies, the head is never injured. The head of this body is Jesus Christ (Colossians 1:18). Even though we worry about head injuries, we do not need to worry about the head of the church. We never have to worry about a crippling blow to our head. Not even Satan can take Him down. Christ is all-powerful, all- knowing, and will never be subjected to any weakness or injury. Christ will always reign as the church's head. We as people have weaknesses, insecurities, and imperfections. What a tremendous blessing to be guided by a head who will never have a lapse in judgment or make a rash decision. What an incredible blessing to have a head who will never be weakened, dethroned, or detained. What a blessing to have a head who loves us and looks out for us. Let's give Christ the praise, glory, and, above all, obedience He deserves. ~ Brett Petrillo

Concussions “The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. {16} For in him all things were

created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. {17} He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. {18} And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that

in everything he might have the supremacy.” (Colossians 1:15-18)

Over the last several years, this has been an almost constant discussion in sports, particularly in football.

Christ is all-powerful, all-knowing, and will never be subjected to any weakness or injury.

Introduction:

A. Text: Philippians 4:6-7.

B. There is no doubt we are living in the “Age of _______________” (NYT). 1. Anxiety disorders affect ________ million adults in the U.S. 2. The number of Google searches for anxiety has _____________ in the last 5 years (Google Trends).

C. Let’s note the differences between worry, fear, and anxiety. 1. Fear has to do with tangible, physical objects or ______________ (Psa. 34:4). 2. Worries are grounded in _________ __________________ (Matt. 6:25). 3. With anxiety, our worries are imagined or unrealized. Anxiety can even be _____________ (1 Pet. 5:7, Php. 4:6).

Discussion: Philippians 4:6-7

A. Paul starts off in bold fashion by saying: “Be anxious for _______________” (NKJV). 1. God knows how such can ________

us down or _______ us up spiritually. 2. Note Prov. 12:25, Prov. 29:25. 3. Again and again the Bible says: “Don’t worry. Don’t be anxious.” Note 1 Pet. 5:7, Matt. 6:31-32.

B. Paul tells us us how, as people of faith, we can handle our anxiety. He says to “____________”. 1. You may feel that you have, but it’s important that we ____________ on _________________. The antidote to worry is ___________ and __________ in our Heavenly Father. 2. Note Matt. 6:25-32.

C. Paul says that if we do this, then the “______________ of God…will guard our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” 1. This is how ______ wants us to live. Note 2 Tim. 1:7. 2. We do not always experience this peace because our anxious thoughts want to ____________ ___________________.

D. Note how we are to pray: with “prayer and _____________________, with ____________________”. 1. This is how ___________ taught us to pray. Note Matt. 6:9-13. 2. Yet another blessing here is that giving thanks can help us shift away from those anxious thoughts, as we become more aware of our ________________. 3. Note Php. 4:8-9, 2 Cor. 10:5. 4. If we will shift our focus away from our anxious thoughts, Paul says, “the God of ______________ will be with you”.

We need your help to make SOAR a success! Here are some ways you can help…

1. Housing: We house all of our out of town SOAR guests in members’ homes or at a local hotel. Please fill out the housing form (found on the foyer table) and place it in the white box there at that table. If you can’t house in your home this year, you can still help by covering the cost of a hotel room. $200 will cover lodging for up to 6 people for SOAR. Make checks out to Central and turn those in to Jeremy Hinote or Sam Welsh ASAP. You can also follow the link in the bulletin on the SOAR page today to fill out your housing form. We need 250 spots in members’ homes this year.

2. Volunteer: You can sign up now on the Teen Board to help serve. There are a variety of places to serve during SOAR weekend.

3. Drinks: We have collected all we need. Thank you!

4. Little Debbies: We’re collecting all kinds of Little Debbies for SOAR meals. Please bring those and place those in the foyer in marked bins.

5. Donations: SOAR can’t happen without plenty of funds – we depend on donations from Central members to make SOAR happen. For 2020 we'll need over $13,000 to take care of everything needed for SOAR. If you can’t help in any other way or would just like to make a donation towards SOAR – YOU CAN! Just make checks to Central give them to Jeremy or Sam ASAP.

SOAR 2020 - Announcements About SOAR: SOAR is an annual weekend Youth Rally hosted by the Central

each year. This is Central’s 18th year of SOAR. We're expecting over 700 guests from 70 different congregations from all over the southeast. Our theme this year is

"Hindsight 2020". SOAR is March 20-22.
