[T]he established American press in the past ten years . . . has performedprecisely the function it was intended to perform by those who wrote theFirst Amendment of our Constitution....
So far as the Constitution goes, the autonomous press may pub-lish what it knows, and may seek to learn what it can.
-Address by Justice Stewart, Yale Law School (Nov. 2, 1974), reprinted, except for opening courtesies, in Stewart, "Or of the Press," 26 HASTINGS
L.J. 631, 631, 636 (1975).
JUSTICE POTTER STEWART
It has been twenty-one years since he was appointed to the Su-preme Court, five years since the Yale speech. In that time JusticePotter Stewart has repeatedly enlivened the debate over the mean-ing of the press clause of the first amendment. In recognition ofthis continuing inquiry, the Hofstra Law Review dedicates to himthis Symposium on the Press Clause.
