BEEN ’S BRIEFING

TigerTalk

Whew, that was fast… we are well into the second semester. The beginning of the second

semester brought changes to some student schedules and some advisory changes based

upon first semester scores. We have made some adjustments to some of our remediation

advisory sessions and the Read-180 program as many student “graduate” from these oppor-

tunities at the end of the first semester. Students identified as needing access to an addition-

al academic push has been placed into the second semester of these remediation opportuni-

ties. Remember, the focus is on providing as many opportunities for learning as possible over

the course of the school day.

The beginning of the second semester generally marks the beginning of two very important

required activities, aside from focusing on learning. Standardized testing and student regis-

tration for the next school year are the two important activities every student will participate in

prior to the end of the school year. On the testing front, CVMS has identified the beginning of

the State mandated assessment window to begin February 29, 2016. This year the State has

adopted a full electronic assessment. The assessment is made up of different components

that together provide an assessment score for the areas of math and English language arts

(ELA). You may recall receiving the results of last year’s SBAC assessment, though the

scores didn’t count. The big “take away” from the mailed results is how the earned scores are

communicated, in a number line and in text format. Every student that participates in these

assessments will receive results towards the beginning of the next school year. I do not yet

have a test schedule fully fleshed out, but I will post any changes to the current bell schedule

or test schedule when complete.

As we move through the calendar every student, 6th, 7th, and 8th, will participate in these

State mandated assessments. The results of these exams assist with the best class place-

ment possible for your student next school year. The specific details of these exams are still

being worked out.

Please check the CVMS webpage for up to the minute information.

This year we have implemented a Saturday school program, at least 13 Saturday’s, over the

course of this school year, I’d like to thank the School Board for their grant which allows us to

offer opportunities for students to learn and catch up. This program has been successful so

far and I would like to see this opportunity expanded in the future. This Saturday School aug-

ments our regularly occurring Math Camps. Saturday school dates are assigned by student

need and invitation. Math Camps will occur February 24, 25, and 27, 2016.

I wish everyone the best of health and encourage everyone to regularly check the CVMS

website for CVMS updates and additional/current information, specifically related to exams,

bell schedule changes, and registration information for next year.

Thank you.

POLICIES Safety and Thefts

Parents and students, unfortunately unauthorized items continue to come up missing at school; cell phones, iPods, etc. While

no one likes a thief, if these items are brought to school it is at your own risk. So if you bring an unauthorized item to school

locking them in a personal hall locker is probably safer than taking them to a PE class. If locking the item in a personal hall lock-

er is not an option, then it is recommended that the student lock the item in their individual PE locker. The large community bin in

the PE locker room is for backpacks and is not as secure as their personal locker. We will not search for items that should not

be on campus.

CVMS Searches

With that being stated above, CVMS has the right to search any individual that comes onto our campus when we have a Rea-

sonable Suspicion that the individual may be in possession of an unauthorized item.

Closed Campus

CVMS is a closed campus and once a student arrives they are not allowed to leave until they are leaving for the day or a par-

ent picks them up at school. Students that violate this rule will receive a consequence based on our progressive discipline plan.

Tutoring

CVMS has after-school tutoring from 2:15-2:50PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with transportation. If you arrange for after-

school tutoring on other days you will need to provide your own transportation.

After School Activities

Students need to leave campus at the end of the school day unless they are staying for a supervised event or tutoring. If a stu-

dent is staying for an after school event, like a sporting event, they need to attend tutoring prior to the event. We do not allow

student to wander around the campus unsupervised.

Electronic Items

We recommend that these items are left at home. If a student elects to bring one of these items to school, they are not allowed

to be on, used, or visible between the hours of 7:45AM-2:06PM, or during tutoring and After-School Detention. A parent

will be required to pick up the item each time it is confiscated. Additionally, if a student uses an electronic device to record

something at school (like a fight) that student will be suspended.

1st incident – 3 days of Lunch Detention

2nd incident – 1 day of In-School Suspension

3rd incident (and subsequent incidents) – 2 days of In-School Suspension

Hallway Access

Students are not allowed inside the halls (A, B, C) of the school until 7:30 AM. Prior to the 7:30 AM bell the students can go

to the Multi-purpose room or the gym.

Hats/Head Gear

Hats and head gear are not allowed to be worn inside the buildings at CVMS. A parent will be required to pick up the item

each time it is confiscated. If a student repeatedly violates this rule Progressive Discipline will be used.

Note: There has been an adopted change, 12/14/2010, in the DCSD’s Administrative Regulation 523(a) to include designer drugs. To view the full regulation go to: http://dcsd.k12.nv.us/filedb/file992.pdf “Possession, use, distribution, or intent to distribute, and/or being under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, including by not limited to, inhalants, designer drugs*, controlled substances (or a substance purported to be a controlled sub-stance or mimic the effect of a controlled substance), prescription drugs, unless the student has been prescribed the pre-scription drug by a physician and in accordance with Board Policy 508, or inappropriate use of an over-the counter (OTC) drugs, The definition of possession, as used here, includes all aforementioned substances as well as drug para-phernalia containing drugs on the person of a student, in any school locker, or any clothing, purse, backpack, automo-bile, or any other…”

***IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS OF 6TH GRADE STUDENTS***

A Tdap immunization is required for all students entering 7th grade and must be given prior to the first

day of school. There is no grace period. To be enrolled in public school, Nevada Law (NRS 392.435) requires that all

children must have up to date immunizations and boosters. We are required to remove children from school that are not

fully immunized or have incomplete records. Please obtain the Tdap immunization from the provider of your choice as

soon as possible.

This immunization is available at the CVMS Health Office for the low cost of $10 to those who are uninsured or un-

derinsured. There will be a cost increase in April, so please take advantage of this offer now. Immunizations are free to

those who have Medicaid, Nevada Check Up, or are Native American or Alaskan.

If you wish your child to receive this vaccination at school, please complete the CVMS Vaccine Administration Rec-

ord found on the Immunization Information page of the Student Health Services part of the CVMS website and return it

to the school nurse along with payment (if applicable).

In order to keep our CVMS community healthy and promote your student’s attendance and academic success, please

use the following daily precautions to keep yourself and your child healthy during this cold and flu season:

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth where germs enter the body.

Clean and disinfect surfaces and commonly handled objects that may be contaminated with germs.

Do not share food or drinks with others.

Keep your child home from school if he/she has had a fever of 100.0 degrees or higher (without the use of fever

reducing medication) within the last 24 hours.

Maintain a strong immune system by eating healthy foods rich in vitamins and minerals, staying hydrated, getting

plenty of sleep, and exercising regularly.

Receive an annual Influenza vaccination. It is not too late.

Non-Discrimination Policy The Douglas County School District Board of Trustees supports

equal educational opportunity for students free from discrimination

based upon race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, disability,

or national origin (Board Policy No. 103). This concept of equal op-

portunity serves as a guide for staff in making decisions relating to

school facilities; and selection of educational materials, equipment,

curriculum, and regulations affecting students. In support of this

policy and in compliance with the requirements of federal law, no

student will be required to attend mandatory meetings solely based

on the student’s race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, disa-

we will not deliver them during school, and we cannot guarantee students will pick them up. Thank you for observing this

policy.
