As we were all set to welcome 2017, two extremely unnerving

incidents shook the foundation of what we mean by freedom – Terrorist attack in Istanbul, and mass molestation of women in Bengaluru. But how does it concern us, we Amdavadis? We don’t live in Istanbul nor do we live in Bengaluru (or even Delhi or Mumbai). We are all safe in our cosy houses, in our safe city Ahmedabad. The question here is – how do we measure safety? Is the city safe or unsafe?

As a part of CWDC, Faculty of Business Administration (NRBBA) had organized a guest session by Dr. Mayuri Pandya, Principal, GLS Law college, who talked about the laws against sexual harassment at a workplace. While explaining the term harassment, she asked one question – how many of you have been eve teased, stared at, have felt uncomfortable because your personal space is intruded upon in a public place? Unfortunately all of us relate to it. Be it a small village or an urban city. So, it is not the city that makes you unsafe. It is complete lack of sensitivity, humanity and respect for human beings. What happened in Bengaluru this

time, or what happened in Delhi 4 years back (Nirbhaya) or what has been happening to all of us in public places is a blatant show of misogyny. Access to public space has always been denied to women. Very much like these spaces are denied to all in a terrorist attack prone areas. Sometimes people – family members, friends stop us, and most of the times our own fear stops us. What we fail to understand is that by not accessing the public spaces will not stop the harassment. The harassment will only stop when we are able to stir the sense of respect in all.

This sounds impossible, right? But then, doesn’t every change sound impossible? These infuriating incidents on the first day of the year have made us realize that ‘the heaven of freedom’ is still far. It made me feel angry and helpless. But every new beginning brings hope, so instead of leaving at the thought of impossibility, let us all get together and spread sensitivity for other human beings, reclaim our right to access the public spaces and right to breathe without any fear of getting molested or getting killed in a terrorist attack.

CaptUrinG the nUanCeS oF viBrant ahMeDaBaDIt was recently that

foundation students at GLS Institute of Design were to

attend photography workshop for five days from 13 December to 17 December, 2016. The institute invited Ravikiran Rangaswami, a practicing professional photographer to provide hands on exposure to students who were going to have introduction to the science and arts in photography. The course was designed and coordinated by Akash Gaur, faculty GLS Institute of Design. The intent of the course was to introduce possible usage of camera and related techniques but it was also a field exposure for students. During the course the students traveled across the city to discover nooks and places that are essentially characteristics of the city. The entire batch of students were divided into groups and given briefing respectively. They were suggested to capture monuments, people in action, kitlis, emerging urban landscapes; bridges, hangout places and gates and poles of the old city. Some students used camera for the first time. City’s enigmatic sights and capturing momentary actions of people was a great experience. The course have

enthused them to explore deeper into the world of photography. This introduction has enabled the students with avid observation; using camera as a tool, bringing out the narrative of the location and communicating the same to the audience. “And it has definitely

improved their capabilities to frame and click which will connect them with the people and the city of Ahmedabad.” Applauded the director Mr. Anil Sinha while looking at the exhibition.

GLS Institute of Design also organised an exhibition of final

pictures taken by the students. The exhibition was open for all and received overwhelming response and feedback from the visitors. This practise of working hard and open invitation to the city is reflection of confidence in students. This is the third time that students

have organised exhibition of their final work Of different courses. The online presence of students is also extended worldwide resulting positive image for the institute as well for the university. Wide coverage of event was published by local newsmaker also.

In 1998, before the company was even incorporated, the concept of the doodle was

born when Google founders Larry and Sergey played with the corporate logo to indicate their attendance at the Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert. They placed a stick figure drawing behind the 2nd “o” in the word, Google, and the revised logo was intended as a comical message to Google users that the founders

were “out of office.” While the first doodle was relatively simple, the idea of decorating the company logo to celebrate notable events was born. In the beginning, the doodles mostly celebrated familiar holidays; nowadays, they highlight a wide array of events and anniversaries of renowned people across the world. One of the recent examples of such a doodle is the one made in memory of

Savitribai Phule.Over time, the demand for

doodles has risen in the U.S. and internationally. Creating doodles is now the responsibility of a team of talented illlustrators (they are called doodlers) and engineers. For them, creating doodles has become a group effort to enliven the Google homepage and bring smiles to the faces of Google users around the world.

Cartoon Guide to Statistics (Cartoon Guide Series) ByLarry Gonick, Woollcott Smith

Reviewed by Dipalee Atre

Certain subjects baffle us. And the books prescribed don’t necessarily make

things better. How many times have we wished for a book that could clear our basic concepts with the use of identifiable examples and helpful illustrations? And if humour is used....well...that would just help us in retaining what we have read!

The Cartoon Guide series is very helpful and covers subjects such as calculus, genetics, physics, chemistry and algebra, besides statistics. Using cartoon illustrations and witty text, the

basic concepts are covered to the satisfaction of the user.

I chanced upon the Cartoon Guide to Statistics, by Larry Gonick and Woollcott Smith – a paperback edition from 1993. The authors have used simple yet clear language and funny illustrations to give us a proper grounding in the main ideas of modern Statistics – summarizing and displaying data, probability (using examples from gambling and medicine!), random variables, hypotheses testing,

confidence interval estimation, and much more. The witty approach, the illustrations used – eg. Florence Nightingale and her efforts to improve the conditions in which soldiers were treated, the Challenger tragedy to name two – are all real and can be identified with. Reading about the practical application of these techniques and concepts makes the subject come alive and helps in grasping this subject which has honestly struck terror in the hearts of many. Beginners, be it college students or non-statistics people wanting to enter into the field of data analysis, will find this book immensely helpful.

So go ahead and order your copy from Amazon.in. You won’t regret it.
