Thank you to everyone
who made VBS such a fun
adventure!
Some of our St. Matthew
ladies and a few guests
gathered on June 27 for a
Women’s Ministries
breakfast and learned
how to make patriotic
wreaths for the 4th of July.
After a delicious breakfast
of sausage & egg casse-
role, fresh fruit and Dan-
ishes, Kristin Wiesenborn
presented a short devo-
tional that included
quotes by several of our
country’s forefathers and
prayer for our nation.
Carroll Valdez, a friend
and co-worker of Eliza-
beth’s, instructed us in
the art of wreath-making.
We all had a great time
laughing and getting to
know each other better
and by the end of the
meeting had beautiful
patriotic wreaths to take
home and hang on our
front doors!
The event is called "Oktoberfest Buddies and Brews". It will be held on Wednesday, Septem-ber 30 from 6-9 PM at the Saint Arnold Brew-ery. Tickets are $70/per person and includes a German Buffet Dinner catered by Rudy Lech-ner's Restaurant and cus-tom brewed beers by

These meetings are an opportunity to get to know others at the church and also have been interesting dis-cussions about vari-ous views and opin-ions of our read-ing. We hope you can join us!!
August 28 is the next date for our Book Club to meet.
The book will be Proof of Heaven by Eben Alex-ander, M.D.
Jackie Geyer has offered to host the meeting at her home with Marion Meyer cohosting.
Even Mark Cox, owner of the restaurant, enjoyed the evening. I am looking into the cost of this type event and will have more infor-mation soon. We would like to get an idea of how many people would like to attend. Le Mark, Rob or me know. Thanks. -Brenda Johnson
Guess Who is Turning 90??

Volume 9, Issue 3
No, not me! Our church, St Matthew, is turning 90 in 2016! The plan is to have some special events during the year. Mark McMillen and Rob Johnson are on the organizing com-mittee and looking for ide-as as to how to celebrate this important event. During our 75th anniver-sary year we had an even-ing dinner at Mark's Res-taurant which was the site of our church at one time. It was an amazing evening!

Say Hello to Me
I’m careful, cautious and courteous
I’m not extraordinary but
Extra-ordinary
I’m God’s girl, Daddy’s Princess
and Momma’s One-and-Only
I pray morning, evening, and night
I sleep with a nightlight
I’m adopted and proud
I love love
And hate hate
I give the Lord thanks
For answering my prayers
I tell Him I love Him
And ask for forgiveness
And say, “Thank Goodness
I’m me”
Summer is Here
The beach is finally at its full
I think it’s time we try the pool
Where it’s nice and cool in the summer sun
Where it’s so cool and fun
While the sun is beating
On every friendly meeting
The summer is finally here
I think it’s time to cheer
So Far Away (ode to Juliette)
I had a friend
She had to leave
At that time
I had to grieve
She went away
But that’s okay
Cause I can Skype her any day
Years ago
I don’t know
How we’d keep in touch
Carrier pigeon, telegraph,
and all those things and such
What a burden
If we haven’t heard in
Months how each one’s doing
With technology now-a-days
I can always see her face
Hear her voice anytime
She’s just a click away
I know that England’s far away
I know that here I have to stay
But we’re still friends
We’re friends by heart
Even if we’re far apart

Where did you attend school/University?
I attended the School of Nursing at College of the Mainland in 1990. Registered Nurse
license was obtained in 1994. I attended Grand Canyon University for my Bachelor degree
in Nursing.
Why did you decide to become a nurse?
Initially, I wanted to become a physician; however, a doctor-friend discussed with me the
great attributes of being a nurse. He believed I was better suited for the nursing profession
because of the way I interacted with people. In addition, he pointed out that nursing of-
fered more opportunities in various fields. I took his advice and became a nurse. He was
right, too, as I’ve enjoyed years in family practice, the O.R., cardiac surgery, plastic surgery,
pediatrics, and most currently research.
How did you know becoming a nurse was the right decision?
Nursing school was like a version of military boot camp, in my opinion. There were days
where I thought I had been forsaken. During my Pediatric rotation I was taking care of a 2-
year old boy. The patient was having a difficult time in the hospital and often acted out by
screaming and throwing objects. I spent an entire week with this child and when my rota-
tion was up, I said my goodbyes. The next week, I was walking down the hallway and en-
countered this same child. He stood before me, never said a word, looked up, and then
held out his arms. I picked him up and he wrapped his arms around my neck and placed
his head on my shoulder. That was my first God-sighting as a nurse and I knew at that mo-
ment I was where God wanted me to be.
Where are you working now?
I have been employed at MD Anderson Cancer Center for 10 years. I am the current Re-
search Nurse Manager in the Genitourinary Department.
Page 9

The department focuses on prostate, bladder, and renal cancers. Previously, I was in the Stem Cell Transplantation
Department for 9 years.
What are your interests outside of work?
I enjoy all sports, especially tennis. With my new titanium knees I would love to get back on the court. If not, I can
still enjoy riding my bike. Traveling is another interest outside of work. Elizabeth and I have a wish list of places we
want to travel to someday (Scotland, England, and Spain). It is kind of a travel bucket list.
What is your spiritual background?
I was raised, baptized, and confirmed as a member of the Catholic Church. However, when I met Elizabeth, who be-
longed to the Nazarene Church, we both soon discovered the importance of searching for a church where both of us
felt comfortable worshiping and believed in the teachings. Elizabeth and I were having a difficult time finding the right
place. One night we rented the movie “Luther” because we like the actor Joseph Fiennes. It was this movie (we truly
had no idea about its contents) which inspired us to seek and discover the teachings of Martin Luther. St. Matthew
was recommended to us by Al Roos’ daughter-in-law, who was working with Elizabeth at the time.
What does it mean to be an Elder at St. Matthew Lutheran Church?
It was an honor to be asked to serve in such an important role as an Elder of St Matthew. This wasn’t something I
would have ever expected, or believed to be worthy of. However, as usual, God has His own plans for each of us. I take
the position of being an Elder very seriously. I can honestly say that it does change and affect the way I make decisions
in my life. I often ask myself, “Would my words and actions provide a reflection of my spirituality to others or if a con-
gregational member were to observe my behavior in daily life?” The Board of Elders consists of members from many
backgrounds with various talents. This diversity allows for an assortment of opinions and ideas in determining the
outcomes of issues that the church or its members may encounter. These men are passionate about the message and
teaching of Jesus Christ along with Martin Luther’s guiding principles. It has been a privilege to serve with these gen-
tlemen.
What is in your future?
I know where I would like my journey to move toward in the future. I am continuing to complete my studies to obtain
a degree in Parish Nursing. I would like to combine my nursing career with the spiritual aspects of my life. This would
allow me to move into the community and offer not only patient care but also address the spiritual needs of the pa-
tient’s life. As a Parish Nurse I could facilitate medical as well as spiritual resources for my patients. I would enjoy
providing home visitations, like it used to be in the country where doctors made house calls. We live in a world so con-
trolled by computers, answering machines, e-mail, texting, and other forms of social media, I feel now more than ever
we need human touch and attention in order to heal the physical, mental, social and spiritual well-being of our pa-
tients. Now that is my future plan, stay tuned for God’s future plan!
The 2015 SMLC Church picnic will be held on
