Being Thankful Changes Everything Lysa Terkeurst

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rul-ers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 6:12 (NIV 1984)

It was 1992. I sat on the bed, tears streaming down my face, negative thoughts racing through my mind…Why does marriage have to be so hard sometimes? Why can’t he see my side of things? Why won’t he change? Maybe I married the wrong man.

This was a scene repeated over and over the first five years of my mar-riage. I was dis-couraged, over-whelmed and so tempted to give up.

But here I am 19 years later, feeling so thankful I didn’t walk away.

Ephesians 6:12 has reminded me over the years that my husband isn’t my enemy. Art may feel like my enemy, but the truth is Satan is the real enemy who hates marriage and schemes against my husband and me.

Satan’s goal is always to be one who casts something between two to cause a separation.

Satan wants to separate us in every way. He wants to separate us with conflict, hurt feelings, misunder-standing, and frustrations of all kinds.

He wants to separate us from our neighbors, our friends, our co-workers, our parents, our spouses,

our kids.

He wants to separate us from God’s best. He wants to separate us from God’s heart.

One of the strategic ways Satan starts these separations is by luring us into a place of grumbling and complaining. If he can get us to focus on what is aggra-vating and downright negative in life, then little cracks of distance start form-ing in our relationships.

The grass starts looking greener every-where else except where we are stand-ing.

I can see this so clearly when I look back on the first five years of my mar-riage. Somehow, I became so hyper focused on all I felt was wrong with my husband, I became blinded to all that

was good.

I grumbled and com-plained and nagged and set out to change him.

And I almost destroyed my marriage in the proc-ess.

Satan had a field day as the separation between Art and I kept ever wid-ening. We went to coun-

seling but my heart was so hurt—so hardened, I refused to connect on any level. I was bitter, grumpy and miserable.

Then one day as I was in a fit of tears asking God to please make things better, I felt challenged to start list-ing out things about Art that for which I was thankful.

It was hard at first. I had bought Satan’s whispers seeing only the negative and believing there was very little positive to find.

But, with each positive

Page 2

What’s Up with Hurt & Negativity? quality I listed, slowly my perspective changed. It was as if the clouds of negativity lifted and I could see his good qualities once again.

How sad that I spent five years thinking the grass would be greener somewhere else. Now I know the grass is always greener where you water and fertilize it. And being thankful — really intentionally listing out things for which we are thankful — is a great way to start watering and fertilizing. It changes everything.

Dear Lord, thank You for helping me see how benefi-cial it is to be aware and appreciative of the good qualities in those I love. Lord, help me to recognize Satan’s schemes and combat them with the power of having a truly thankful heart. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Application Steps: Every time a negative, separating thought comes into your mind today, intentionally combat it with some-thing for which you are thankful about that person.

Reflections: How does it make me feel to dwell on what I wish was different about another person?

Could this devotion showing up in my inbox today be a reminder from God that there are positive things for which I can be thankful?

How does having a thankful heart change things?

Power Verses: Philippians 4:6, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanks-giving, present your requests to God.” (NIV 1984)

2 Corinthians 4:15, “All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.” (NIV 1984)

MOVIES YOU SHOULD SEE!

Rango RANGO is a unique ani-mated movie with a unique hero, a pet cha-meleon who fancies him-self a great actor and must use his talents to save a western desert town full of crazy critters.

RANGO is a delightful mix of western adventure, comedy, wit, and general kookiness. RANGO is a comedy, and it’s a western. As such, it’s full of many a homage to spaghetti westerns like FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE and comic westerns like CAT BALLOU, with some refer-ences to CHINATOWN thrown into the mix. The end result is hilarious, fun, exciting, witty, clever, delightfully quirky, wonderfully winsome, and thor-oughly engaging. RANGO ultimately has a very strong moral sensi-bility. There are even some overt and indirect ref-erences to God, including the Christian worldview that permeated the Old West in the United States. Although Rango is a teller of very tall tales, his lies are eventually exposed. Along the way, he learns his real divine purpose in life – a life of helping others, specifically the people of Dirt. Thus, the lizard introduced in the beginning of the movie does indeed become Rango, a real hero. In fact, it is the “Spirit of the West” that informs Rango of his true purpose, in a rather clever way that’s both religious and non-religious.

Highly Recommended!!! BOOKS YOU SHOULD READ!

Who Do I Talk To? Book 2 ~ A House of Hope Novel by

Neta Jackson

In the last place she ever imagined she'd be, Gabby will discover what she's made of--and for. Gabrielle Fairbanks knew her husband was upset with her. But she never expected him to change the locks on their Chi-cago penthouse, cancel her credit cards, and disappear with their two boys. Now she's literally on the streets with her elderly mother, her mom's dog...and $220 to her name. Thank goodness she has somewhere to go--Manna House, the women's shelter where she works. But even in the bustling shelter--surrounded by residents and the Yada Yada Prayer Group--Gabby feels more alone than ever. She longs for someone she can really talk to, someone to help mend together the pieces of her broken life. Her warm-hearted lawyer seems ready to offer more than legal counsel...but is he the answer to prayer or just a pleasant distraction? As her fragile plans fall apart, Gabby hits on a possibility so wild and wonderful it has to be one of those "God things." Something she's only seen happen to other Christians. Until now. For everyone who loves the best-selling Yada Yada Prayer Group novels...The Yada Yada House of Hope series features familiar faces and places, with a fresh new life all its own.

Review: We don't want to spoil the plot. Just read the book. It is uplifting, well worth your time and glorifies the Lord. Thanks Neta! Great work!

Deceitful Playing A rather well-built man saw an advertisement for a job at the zoo. When he went there, he was horrified to find that the only job they had open was for somebody to play the part of a monkey. A lot of children were coming in the next few days, and the zoo, having no monkeys, needed someone to impersonate one. Since money was tight, the man decided he would take the job.

He arrived before sunrise, got into the monkey outfit, and slipped into his cage. Finally, day dawned, and the children came. All he had to do was pensively pace the floor, look rather adept at swinging between trees, and eat the peanuts and bananas whenever they were fed to him.

After eight or ten hours, he became thoroughly exhausted. The bananas were getting the better of him. As he swung from one tree to another, rather nauseated, he slipped and fell into the lion's den next door. He shouted, "Help! Help!"

The lion leaned over and said, "If you don't shut up, we'll both lose our jobs." Ain't Misbehavin' Preparing my five-year-old son, Keegan, for his first over-night sleepover, I explained, "Eat whatever is served, say thanks, and make sure you behave yourself." "Oh, don't worry, Mom," Keegan replied. "I never sin at anyone else's house."

Pope John Paul II Speaks to Youth Week Thirty-Six Draw near to God... (James 4:8) "Dear young people, like the first disciples, follow Jesus! Do not be afraid to draw near to Him, to cross the threshold of His dwelling, to speak to Him face to face, as you talk with a friend." --Pope John Paul II, World Youth Day XII

Think About That Take a minute to think about the best conversation you have ever had with a friend. What did you talk about? How did it feel to talk so openly and honestly with a friend? That's how we are to talk with Jesus--as if he were your best friend whom you can tell anything, with whom your secrets are safe. Take Action This week write a letter to Jesus as if he were your best friend. What do you want to tell him? What do you want him to know about you? What do you want to ask him? What do you want to know about him? Say A Prayer Jesus, thank you for being my friend. I am happy to know that I can talk to you as I would talk to my best friend.

Did You Know? The Pope's maternal grandparents were Feliks and Anna Kaczorowska. His maternal grandfather was a packsaddle maker.

Taken from...My Dear Young Friends: Pope John Paul II Speaks to Youth on Life, Love, and Courage My Dear Young Friends, a collection of fifty-two weekly reflections on living in the Spirit, invites young people to read and act on Pope John Paul II's inspiring addresses to young people gathered at annual World Youth Day celebrations. "Teamwork is no accident. It’s not a matter of luck or chance. Bosses create team-work–or kill it–by the way they treat people. Employees begin to show teamwork when they feel they are a respected and valuable part of an operation. Making them feel that way is something a good boss works at." Soundings, June ‘88, p. 13

How to Catch a Monkey

Eric Butterworth, Sunday Sermon Masterpiece Collection, Vol. I, p.310

In his book, Life is For Living, Eric Butterworth tells of an expedition of sci-entists who set out to cap-ture a particular species of monkey.…Using their knowledge of a mon-key’s ways, the scientists devised a trap con-sisting of a small jar with a long, narrow neck. Into the jar was placed handfuls of nuts. Sev-eral of these jars were placed along a jungle trail, being securely fastened to a tree. A monkey, scenting the nuts in a bottle, would thrust his paw into the long neck and grasp a handful of nuts. However, as soon as the monkey tried to withdraw its prize it found out that it’s clenched fist would not pass through the narrow bottle neck. A similar thing happened with each bottle. All the monkeys stayed where they were, screaming in fear, unable to escape with the booty, and yet unwilling to let go…until the members of the expedition arrived and took them captive. We may smile at the story about the mon-keys, thinking how foolish they were, but in some respects are we not very much the same? Do we not frequently cling to the very things that hold us back? Do we not fre-quently remain captive through sheer unwill-ingness to let go?

Focus on Success

John E. Anderson, Reader’s Digest, July 1993, p. 22

Recently, a promising 12-year-old gymnast went to a sports psychologist for help. She had all the skills of a fu-ture Olympic medalist, yet never seemed to live up to her potential. The psychologist handed her four darts and in-structed her to toss them at a target across the office. She

looked at him nervously. "What if I miss?" she asked. Those four words summed up her disappoint-ing career. Instead of focusing on how to succeed, she worried about how to keep from failing.

"Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdi-ties no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be cum-bered with your old nonsense." Ralph Waldo Emerson

Saint Pulcheria Memorial 10 September

Profile Daughter of Byzantine Emperor Ar-cadius and Empress Eudoxia. Her father died when she was 15, and she became re-gent of the empire on 4 July 414 until her younger brother Theodosius was old enough to rule. Pulcheria took special care of her brother’s education, ensuring a strong religious background. She took a vow of chastity, and worked for religious reform and evangelization through the empire. When Theodosius took the throne, Pulcheria faded for a while into court life. She supported Pope Leo the Great regarding the Monophysite controversy, and when Theodosius married in 421, his wife con-vinced him to exile Pulcheria. On the death of Theodosius, Pulche-ria was recalled to be empress of the Byzantine Empire. She spon-sored the Council of Chalcedon in 451, and supported the Church against the Nestorian and Eutychian heresies. Built churches, hos-pitals, hospices, and a university in the city of Constantinople Born 19 January 399 Died: July 453 of natural causes Canonized: Pre-Congregation
