Like most of you, for years Ihave heard advocates hold up asan example the many millions ofpeople in China who use bicyclesfor transportation, and have seenthe pictures of masses of peoplepushing and riding their bikes inthe streets. So, when we decidedto take a trip to China this pastsummer, I looked forward withinterest to observing this firsthand.
My observations and percep-tions from that trip were not quitewhat I expected. I never saw thehordes of bicyclists that I had seenin pictures or had envisioned inmy mind. The fact is, as Chinaprogresses, its people turn moreand more to motorized modes oftransportation.
This of course should not besurprising. It is still a fact thatmost people, given a choice, willchoose motorized transportation.Taiwan is a perfect example ofthat. Indeed, it was in Taiwan, notChina, that I observed the massesof people crowding the streets ontwo-wheeled transportation.However, it is was not bicyclesthey were riding, but rather theubiquitous scooter.
Therein lies the inconsistencyof holding out a country such asChina as an example of the bicy-cle as a mode of transportation. Itis not by choice that the Chineseutilize bicycles, but rather becauseof existing circumstances. Bicy-cling has not been an alternative
transportation choice, only a nec-essary transportation mode.
So in reality, advocates need tolook elsewhere for examples ofbicycling as an alternative choicefor transportation. We need pat-terns from places where motorizedtransportation is available, butbicycling has become a seriousalternative choice because of mod-ern considerations such as autoemissions, use of resources, andhealth concerns arising fromsedentary lifestyles.
That being said, China stillexemplifies the multiple ways inwhich a bicycle can be used. Weobserved single riders, three riderson a single bike, the tricycle as ataxi service and bicycles and tricy-cles as utility vehicles. Indeed,one of the most unusual sites wesaw were two extremely well-dressed ladies on a bicycle appar-ently off to some formal occasion.
So while China cannot bepointed to as an example wherebicycling is consciously encour-aged and chosen as an alternativetransportation mode, it does show-case, while it lasts, some of thedifferent roles the bicycle can ful-fill.

If you chum around in theright circles, you'll hear secretivetalk about the Iron Divide TrailSystem in the southern SanRafael Swell. Some disguise itas the cutesy "Rainbow Trails,"others water it down as the dull-sounding "Twin Knolls," butmost call it, with warped affec-tion, "Five Miles of Hell."Whatever the title, Iron Dividebeckons mountain bikes to itsnetwork of doubletracks, ATVtrails, and desert singletrack.
The color-on-rock IronDivide Trail System caters to allability levels. The "Blue" Trail isa good choice if you are a desertneophyte and are tentative aboutthe creepy-crawlies that make aliving in the sand. "Green"means go, and don't look back.Set your gears to cruise modeand wander the desert floor likea nomad--but with a mission."Orange" is for the flood ofcolor radiating from the distantSan Rafael Reef, which grows tocolossal proportions. Orange is awarm color, and you'll sweatbuckets up the two requiredhills."Red" means blood, and thebuzzards will feast on the fleshyou leave behind if you lettestosterone pollute your brain orget lost. Red is for hell--FiveMiles of Hell!
Although Green-Orange maynot be in a 64-pack of CrayolaCrayons, it's the right color com-bination if you want to experi-ence a good chunk of the IronDivide Trail System without get-ting all bloody. It follows mostlytame doubletracks with a touchof ATV/singletrack for which thesystem has become renown.
Location: Southern San RafaelSwell behind Temple Mountain,about 45 miles southeast ofGreen River.
Distance: 16.5 miles, point-to-point (shuttle required).
Tread: Sand and rock double-tracks and singletracks. What didyou expect in the desert?
Aerobic difficulty: Moderate.The first half is mostly downhill,then you hit two significantclimbs before coasting to theend.
Technical difficulty: Moderate.Sand, loose rocks, and a touch ofbedrock require mastery of basicbike handling skills.
Elevation change: The ridestarts at about 6,700 feet anddrops to 5,400 feet. You hit two500- foot climbs near the end: a1.5-mile grind after exiting theOrange Trail and a mile-longspanker around Temple
Mountain. Total gain is about1,500 feet.
Season: April-June andSeptember-November. Days canbe hot whereas nights can be
chilly.
Precautions: Cactus don't needmuch water to survive. You arenot a cactus!
Finding the trail:Temple Mountain trailhead:From Green River drive 11 mileswest on I-70 to Exit 147 andtake UT 24 toward Hanksville.After 25 miles turn right at mile-post 137 for Goblin Valley andTemple Mountain. Continuestraight/west on the SouthTemple Wash road at the GoblinValley turnoff and go throughthe San Rafael Reef. Park in theclearing on the right after pass-ing through the Reef. GreenTrail trailhead: In the shuttle,drive west then north on theSouth Temple Wash road for 9miles to a Y junction for RedsCanyon (left), but fork right forI-70. Pass a corral on the left 1.8miles farther. About .2 milesmore, turn right on a doubletracksigned "motorcycle trailhead"and park at your discretion.
Notes on the trail:Pedal down the doubletrack for3.2 miles to a trail registrationbox at the Blue-Green junction.The rusty tops of Twin Knollscan be seen off to the northeast,periodically. Sign in and take thelittle-used Green Trail (double-track) to the right. (The routemay not be signed, so look forspots of lichen-green paint onrocks in and alongside the track.)Roll across the bleak and forsak-en terrain for 4.3 miles to asigned junction, spying TempleMountain between gaps in thelow mesas along the way, andfork right for "BLM--Iron
Divide Trail" via the OrangeTrail.
Take the ATV trail southeastand gear down for "the Wall."(Don't bother; even the Hall ofFamers can't top it.) Cross abroad elevated ledge of purple,ripple-marked Moenkopi sand-stone and let gravity pull youdown the luge-style singletracktoward the ever-growing SanRafael Reef. Drop into the drywash like a semi plowing downa runaway truck ramp and surfdown the sandy gully for 2 milesto a registration box at the junc-tion signed for TempleMountain. Fuel up because nowyou climb.
The road turns upward quick-ly, and you'll gear down evenfaster. A mile of steady climbingtakes you to a ridge top whereyou can scoop up the circumam-bient view of this beautifullydeserted desert, all crowned byTemple Mountain. Drop toanother dry wash and pedaldown it idly for .5 mile to a Tjunction with North TempleWash. Fork right on a wide pur-ple-sand road to round the back-side of Temple, passing satellitedoubletracks, an abandonedmine camp, and relic cars circa1940.
The road forks one-half milepast the mine camp. Stay left, asRobert Frost would, on thesteeper, rougher, seemingly less-traveled road and climb for ahalf mile. It hurts! When you arebeneath a "thumb" of rock onthe northwest corner TempleMountain, fork right and dropoff a 20-foot ramp. Forkleft/south immediately to chargedown the giant-slalom double-track to your car and the coldbubbly that awaits in your cool-er. You did stock the cooler, did-n't you?

The bike racing season hasstarted for many, the cyclocrossseason that is. Here is anoverview of this unique cyclingdiscipline, what makes it distinctfrom road and mountain bikeracing, and how you can getstarted. The Utah CyclocrossSeries has an outstanding web-site describing the race series,links to clinics, equipment rec-ommendations, and links tonational and internationalcyclocross sites. You can find itat www.utahcyclocross.com.
The season typically starts inlate September and essentiallyends in the U.S. with theNationals in mid-December. Theseason continues in Europe, end-ing with the WorldChampionships at the end ofJanuary. This clearly introducesweather as a major factor. Rain,snow, and freezing temperaturesare not uncommon late in the'cross season. The races are 45-60 minutes in duration, makingfor an intense effort. The defin-ing characteristics of cyclocrossare the courses themselves.While there is no such thing as a"ideal" course, the typical courseis 3-5 km in length with a mix-ture of pavement, grass, forceddismounts, and short runningsections. A section of woodenbarricades that force a high-speed dismount of the bike is ahallmark of the cyclocross race.While dismounting andremounting are critical skills, infact a small fraction of the timeis spent getting on and off thebike. As in road and mountainbike racing, bike fitness is themost important determinant ofsuccess in a cyclocross race.Cyclocross races should be fastwith sections where a pack ofriders can form, and then containtechnical sections where bikehandling and cross-specific skillsare required.
The cyclocross machineclosely resembles a road bikewith some changes in the geom-etry to allow for wider, knobby
tires and cantilever brakes.Cantilevers are used to providemud clearance, and althoughcross bikes have knobby tiresthere is an official width restric-tion of 35 mm maximum; muchnarrower than seen on mountainbikes. At the highest levels ofthe sport, there is strict enforce-ment of the use of drop handle-bars and 35 mm tires, but localrace promoters allow mountainbikes with flat handlebars. Theacceptance of mountain bikes isa topic of great debate from thepurists, but in fact a mountainbike offers little advantage on awell-designed cyclocross course.
You can jump into the sportby buying a specific cyclocrossbike, you can race your existingmountain bike, shock and every-thing, or your can cobble togeth-er a unique bike starting fromeither a touring type road bike,or a mountain bike. There aremany good websites describingthe pros and cons of each setup,you can link to those from theUtah Cyclocross web site. Theideal setup is a light, cross-spe-cific bike with drop handlebars,cantilever brakes, and STI typeshifters. Wheels should be light,but durable. Many peopleespouse the benefits of sew-uptires, but there are many highquality clinchers available andthey are obviously much lesshassle. The Michelin Mud 35mm clincher is the consensuschoice of the Utah 'cross contin-gent. Shoes and pedals are actu-ally critical equipment choices.For shoes a good set of moun-tain bike shoes with optional toespikes is the way to go. Pedalsshould be double-sided MTBstyle and you should select adesign that clears mud easily.Riders will make a case for theirfavorite pedal, but the TimeATACs are superior for 'cross.
Once you have all the gear,then comes the hard part, prac-ticing your skills and adopting atraining plan. The best way tolearn the craft is to watch othersand practice, practice, practice.There are only a couple basic
techniques, but you want to beable to execute those flawlesslyunder the pressure of a race.Fortunately, we have weeklyclinics where the aficionadospractice and pass on their collec-tive wisdom. There is a clinic inSugarhouse Park in Salt Lake, aswell as Logan and Park City.Schedules are on the web site.Cross-specific training shouldconsist of some light running acouple times per week, practic-ing your 'cross skills, and work-ing on your bike fitness. Sincethe races are 60 minutes or less,the training one would do forcriteriums is directly applicableto cyclocross. You should alsotry and ride your cyclocross bikeoff-road as much as possible.Tackling your favorite mountainbike trail on skinny tires, a rigidfork, and drop handlebars is agreat challenge. Equally fun isthe look you will get from riderson full-suspension MTBs.
Cyclocross is one of the mostchallenging and fun disciplinesof cycling. Even if you don'trace, you should come to one ofthe races and find out what allthe excitement is about.

Former Utah Rider Levi Leipheimer finishesThird Overall in the Tour of Spain
Levi Leipheimer became the first American to reach the final podiumof the Tour of Spain, placing third overall with five top-five stage finish-es, while United States Postal Service Pro Cycling Team teammatesRoberto Heras, last year's winner, placed fourth and Jose Luis Rubieraseventh. Leipheimer spent his formative years in the early '90's racing inUtah with the Mi Duole and Brackman's teams before turning pro andracing full-time in Europe.Leipheimer capped off an extremely consistent Vuelta with a secondplace finish in Sunday's final time trial in Madrid, good enough to moveup two spaces on the overall, from fifth to third.
Relaxed and satisfied, Leipheimer said he came to the race set onhelping Heras win a second consecutive Vuelta.
"My primary objective was to show how valuable I could be toRoberto in the mountains and go for a result in the first time trial,"Leipheimer said. "I wanted to show everyone I had the ability to climband then set tempo on the last climb - like I did at Lagos (deCovadonga, the first mountain stage of the race). Stage five was morethan what I really hoped for. When I was done (setting tempo forHeras), I had dropped the yellow jersey and there were only eight or soguys left. I was very satisfied - I really wanted to show what I could do.
"Two days later was the long time trial (stage seven's 44 km race inTorrelavega) and I placed second. Then the next day was another moun-tain finish. I didn't plan on doing anything for myself but in the teammeeting in the morning, Johan said I should try for the stage win. Hewas letting me do my own climb, as did Roberto. I then placed fourthand from there it changed; we had no need to control the race since wewere not in the lead so Chechu (Rubiera), Roberto and I rode our ownrace to keep all of us up there, to keep the strength in numbers."
Leipheimer added that since Heras did not have the lead and was notshowing the same dominant form he displayed at last year's Vuelta,Bruyneel told Heras to attack in order to make up lost time. But whenHeras simply could not ride away from the field, Leipheimer maintainedthe ability to ride his own race. First the good news: Whileairline passenger safety mayremain in doubt, bicyclist safetyis steadily improving. At leastfewer and fewer cyclists are get-ting killed, according to nationalfigures. The number of bicyclistfatalities "declined significantly,"the U.S. Department of Trans-portation (DoT) reports. Thenumber fell 8.5 percent from1999 to 2000, or from 754 to690, according to DoT’s annualcompilation of crash statisticscollected from the states andDistrict of Columbia.
The bicyclist death toll (actu-ally, the "pedalcyclist" figuremay include a few riders of tri-cycles and unicycles) decline hasbeen dropping steadily since1997, when states reported 814deaths, down to 760 in 1998.The 2000 death toll was the firsttime the figure fell below 723since at least 1989, according toDoT’s figures. Cyclists account-ed for two percent of trafficfatalities in 2000. Fatalitiesdropped 20 percent since 1990.
Now the bad news: Whileonly nine cyclists died in Utahroadway accidents last year,these deaths comprised 2.4 per-
cent of the state’s traffic fatali-ties, above the national averageof 1.6 percent. Utah’s rate of4.08 cyclist fatalities per millionpopulation far exceeded thenational average of 2.51 percent.Statistically, Utah ranks as oneof the most dangerous states topedal in: in only six states werebicyclists more likely to diefrom a crash, percentagewise.
The picture shines muchbrighter in Idaho. It’s three bicy-clist deaths made up only 1.1percent of the state’s traffic killand its 2.23 percent share of thehighway death count fell belowaverage. Only Vermont reportedno bicyclist deaths last year.
More bad news: the numberof cyclists nationwide sufferingnon-fatal injuries remained con-stant at 51,000 in 1999 and 2000– despite drops in casualties inevery other category (pedestri-ans, motorists), the NationalCenter for Statistics & Analysis
reports. Cyclists accounted fortwo percent of injuries.
Some other center findingsfrom last year’s reports:
Are bicyclists getting older?In 1990, the average age of thosekilled was 28.1, whereas lastyear the average was 34.8.
Maybe older cyclists are justgetting more reckless. The pro-portion of fatalities in the 25-64age group rose 30% over thedecade. Still, they’re safer thanthe young: 27% of the deathslast year were children betweenfive and 15. The 4.1 per millionpopulation death rate for chil-dren compares with only 2.5 permillion of all cyclists.
As one might expect, mostdeaths occurred where and whenyou’d find the most riders: 63percent occurred in urban areasand 31 percent in July, Augustand September.
Do men ride more, or arethey just more reckless? Men
accounted for 89 percent of thedead and 78 percent of thewounded. Youngsters may begetting better educated or hel-meted, however. Children (those15 and under) accounted for 28percent of fatalities, down from35 percent a decade earlier.Children accounted for 40 per-cent of injuries last year.
The bottle, however, is men-acing cyclists in more seriousways than causing flats whensmashed on the trail. Alcoholplayed a role in 37 percent ofaccidents. In 29 percent, eithercyclists or motorists they collid-ed with met the legal definitionof drunk. In another eight per-cent of cases, at least one partyhad been drinking.
All told, more than 47.000bike riders have died in the lineof cycling since 1932, when thefederal government first startedcollecting figures.

The Route 211 crew made theannual roadie to Las Vegas lastweek for the major InterbikeTradeshow Extravaganza! Wespent five days in the SandsConvention Center trying to findcool new stuff, rekindle longfriendships, and make new ones.Mission accomplished.
The cool stuff was mostly lim-ited to the small guys this year, asthe big companies seemed tomostly reheat the previous years’leftovers. More aluminum bikes,then we saw some aluminumbikes. Oh, and then there werethese aluminum bikes. But someof them were different colors fromthe rest. I think the only peoplewho are truly happy about the cur-rent state of framebuilding are thethree or four Taiwanese companiesthat make everyone’s aluminumbikes!
The 2001 Interbike had thepotential, if just a few more peoplehad played ball, to become theInterbike That Carbon Fiber Built.There were more carbon wheelsthan you could break on a Sundayride, and a few carbon cranks, car-bon spokes, carbon bars, carbonbar ends, carbon seatposts, andeven a carbon crown and steererfor a suspension fork. I’ll take two
of those...for obvious reasons..I don’t want to sound grumpy
here...but I can’t help it. Over hereis company A displaying its new$2000 Scandium (someonedefined as “aluminum with tracesof scam) frame with carbon reartriangle, then a few booths awaysome Asian manufacturer is tryingto sell you that exact frame for$129 if you order 50 of them. Itdoesn’t take long to get the picturethat company A is getting a muchbetter price by ordering 500, thenadding a bundle to the price, andcornering its dealers to placeorders, but sharing very little ofthe profit pie with those dealers.Just when your local bike shop isfull of them, they show up onsomeone’s website for half price.Ahhhrrggg, I’m getting grumpyagain.
Back to the new stuff. Howabout that new Campy Record car-bon crank? Sounds nice, it’s light,about 135 grams lighter than thecurrent one. And a bargain (?) for$1000- $1200? And Campy car-bon hub/ carbon rim wheels, too?No problem. They’re light as well,and priced accordingly, as expect-ed. As some of you may know, Ihave been accused of waking inthe morning and facing Vicenzabefore starting my day, a defenderof big blue to the end. I’m starting
to wonder about these guysthough.
I asked the friendly folks atShimano (triggering an alarm sig-naling an infidel in the booth ).“What’s new this year?” My palwho works there shook my handand his head at the same time andsaid, “Nothing.” “But I heardabout all this ten speed stuff, andthe (“No, none of that yet.”)“Wow, why’d you guys come?” “We have to.” was the reply. “Okay,well uh, Hey that airshifting thingis kind of, uh, cool... has a ten speed cassette that fitsonto a Shimano hub. He is revolu-tionary in his opinion that it’sokay to make something light, butdoesn’t forget to make it work,and make it durable/compatible/serviceable/affordable. This guymust be crazy! What is he think-ing? Seriously, check out hisgoods. They’re awesome. As forRolf, there was this tiny booth, farfrom the Trek display, staffed withfolks saying over and over “We’reno longer part of Trek”. They’vegot good wheels as well, thanks inlarge part to Shook. Look for car-bon rims, light hubs, and defiantindependence from these guys.
I’ve got to stop for a momentand say a word about the productsin the Italian section - beautiful.Although I have lost some sleepover something I saw there, andI’m still trying to get my headright with it. It was called TheKing, and it looked great, had abeautiful paint scheme, was shodwith all the trick new Campygoods, but there was somethingincongruent about it. I’m havingissues, and I may need to lie downand talk about my childhood orsomething... but a carbon fiberDeRosa? No, I just can’t talkabout it, I mean it was beautiful,but maybe that was just because itwas in the Italian section. Ah,what am I saying, I don’t evenknow myself anymore...
Other good things I saw werethe Maverick bike, Velomaxwheels, Sram’s re-release ofMavic’s SSC derailleur, er, makethat Sram’s new rear derailleur,the Marzocchi girls- I mean forks,
our neighbors in Ogden-WickWerks - had a cool front derailleurthat lifts the chain onto the ringsinstead of just shoving it over(check ‘em out), Speedplay roadpedals can now be adjusted tolimit side float-now they are trulythe best pedal, Fox forks. Then Iwent into the BMX section andcame out with one shoe, a tattoo,and pierced ear!
There were also the goofythings. Like the Risigo bike that isthere every year. This bike doesnot use a circular motion crank,but instead you push down on thepedals, up-down, up-down. Butwhen the pedal goes down, theseat raises, so your are riding atwo wheeled pogo stick sort ofthing that would seem like themechanical bull in Gilley’s bar ifyou could get any speed on it. Gotto hand it to those guys, thoughbecause they are there every yearno matter what.
At the other end of the techno-geek spectrum, how about a car-bon hubbed and spoked wheel thatis halved in the middle of the hub.If one of those carbon spokes callsit a day, there’s no need to worryabout replacing it. You simply takeout all the nipples on that side ofthe wheel, and replace the entirehalf wheel. Sounds simple enough.We’ve toiled long enough replac-ing just the broken spoke in awheel, anyway! In this case theJackson Five was wrong, one bad

When the LoToJa Classicbegan in 1983, nine cyclists leftthe start line in front of SunriseCyclery and completed the epicride from Logan to Jackson Hole.Back then the finish line was intown and the winning time wasnine hours.
On Sept. 15, 2001, an impres-sive 556 cyclists left Logan in sep-arate categories at 10 minute inter-vals, and headed north on stateRoute 89. That number represent-ed a 65 percent increase over2000’s start of 337 cyclists. Raceorganizers brimmed with delightat the large turnout.
Yet despite the record increase,good weather conditions, and a$1,000 cash bonus prize, the 19thannual LoToJa did not see ScottMoningers’ 1996 course record of7:26 fall to a new mark. In fact,
the fastest course time for the daywas recorded by the winner of theMen’s Masters 45-plus category— not the Men’s Pro I, II."I was shocked," said DanaHarrison, 45, Sandy, when helearned that his 8:54:16 was thefastest time for the day. "I attributethat to getting into a really goodgroup of about nine riders beforeTreasureton Summit. With such asmall group, no one could hide, sowe got down to business rightaway."
Harrison, who started racing 14years ago and won the LoToJaMasters 35-44 category in 1999,said his group soon caught theCat. 4’s and dropped them. Next,they caught the Masters 35-44group, which had started 20 min-utes ahead of the 45-plus peloton. Harrison said he began to feelstronger as the race progressed.That strength helped him bridge
gaps between Freedom and AlpineJunction, and contribute to thegroup’s high pace into Jacksonand then on to Teton Village. Harrison was followed by second-place finisher T. Bjerga of CedarCity (8:54:19) and a few secondslater by Anthony Quinn of SaltLake City (8:54:26) for thirdplace.
"It was a really great race, andI plan on coming back next year,"he said. He added that this was hisfifth LoToJa, and before choosingto do the first one, he had toldhimself that he’d never do a roadrace that was 203 miles long.Also planning to come back is thewinner of the Women’s licensedcategory. In 1996, Lisa Peck, 35,Salt Lake City, was diagnosedwith Multiple Sclerosis. But Peckdoesn’t let the disease get in herway on the road or mountain bike.She crossed the line in 9:27:45 —less than 35 minutes slower thanHarrison and other top male fin-ishers. When she began the day her planwas only to finish. Although Peckhad taken sixth place at the
Masters World Mountain BikeChampionships in August, thiswas her first LoToJa, She didn’tknow how her body wouldrespond to the energy demandsand distance.
"I lost a lot of training duringJune and July because of bronchi-tis," she said. "I only did a coupleof long rides before the race, so Ihad no intentions of winning it."But as the day progressed, Peckfelt strong. She began to entertainthoughts of winning the race aftertaking Queen of the Mountain onTin Cup Pass. After passingHoback Junction and still feelinggood despite a stiff headwind, theidea of winning pulled her fasterto Teton Village."After Hoback Junction I wasexcited to be so close," said Peck."It was real exciting to cross thefinish line and to know that I hadwon."
Robin Folweiler of Jacksontook second place with 9:33:09,and she was quickly followed byJami Smith of Logan at 9:33:15.There were nine licensed womenin the race and all finished.
In regard to fastest rides, the tan-dem team of Gary Gardiner andGardner Brown of Kaysville fin-ished fifth overall with 8:54:34.In the Men’s Pro I, II race, SaltLake City’s Brent Cannon tookfirst place with 8:58:51. Given thesame time was second-place fin-isher Shawn Mitchell of Boise,and Kirk Eck of Smithfield whotook third.
LoToJa Race Director BrentChambers said approximately 60cyclists were recorded as DNF’s.There were 23 relay teams; lastyear there were eight. The oldestrider was 71 and the youngest was15. Plans are already under way forLoToJa 2002, and the race organi-zation is preparing for anothermajor increase in riders.

On the morning of Saturday,September 29th, a mob ofcycling enthusiasts converged atthe base of Park City MountainResort (PCMR) to kick-off the2001 Utah Cyclocross season.The morning was hot and drywith nary a cloud in the sky, anddust floated from the course asthe riders warmed-up and didsome practice laps.
It wasn’t your "typical 'crossconditions" explained race co-organizer Jon Gallagher Saturday
after the race, who claims thatwith 'crossevents, "you hope forrain and snow". A sport thatattracts the nittiest and grittiestathletes from both mountain androad cycling, cyclocrossers comelooking for plenty of obstaclesand hazards, and no smallamount of carnage. 'Tough', and'hard' is synonymous with 'crossfor most.
Competitors on Saturday,however, found a different kindof 'tough', and 'hard' than theyexpected. At 8:30 Saturday morn-ing, when arriving at the venuefor the event approved by SLOC
over a month in advanced, orga-nizers found that it had beentorn-up and dismantled by con-struction activity going on at thePCMR base area.
Suddenly there was more onthe morning agenda than simplystringing up tape, and settingcones and obstacles. Instead,organizers fired up a bulldozer
and tried to make the course'somewhat rideable' so at leastthey could have a race. Thus, thecourse was about half as long asoriginally planned, with a 'pun-ishing' uphill, a 'hang on andhope' downhill, and slick corners.
Many agreed that the coursefavored mountain bikes.Gallagher stated, "you reallydon’t want to set courses thatway," but rather, "reward theguys who take the time to set up'cross bikes." A+ winner, andSobe/Cannondale rider BartGillespie who won the series lastyear, decided to ride hisCannondale Scalpel mountainbike instead of his 'cross bikebecause he "was afraid of getting
flats" on the rough course and"didn’t have any spare wheels".A+ riders, Carter Davis and ArtO’conner, however, finished sec-ond and third, both on 'crossbikes. Dirk Cowley made his winof the Men’s A division, toughingit out on a 'cross bike as well.Second and third in Men’s Awent to David Tsai and Ian
Smith. Despite the course’ brevity, it
was still good for passing andtraffic, and despite the event notbeing "what everyone was hopingfor from the season opener", thecompetitors raced hard and were"pretty understanding" of the sit-uation, Gallagher said.
"They put together a fairlydecent course for what they hadto deal with," Fourth place A+rider, Kelly Ryan said, who com-peted in XC mountain bikingthroughout the summer. Ryandoes 'cross because "it’s fun morethan anything," and "everybody’snot like, totally cut-throat . . . itreally is a good group of peoplethat do it." Ryan said of theseries’ first event, that it was just
"good to get out there." The third race in the series
will also be at PCMR on October20, and organizers assure com-petitors that it will be on theoriginally planned site which will"make for a longer lap, asmoother downhill and hopefullya much better race", saidGallagher. As for the series ingeneral, promoter Matt Ohranhas put together 11 events com-pared to last year’s 14, hoping todo "fewer races at a higher quali-ty." The biggest difference thisyear is that there are no events
scheduled for December 15th and16th, traditionally the dates forCyclocross Nationals.
Despite the complications,when all was said and done, theracers got out, had fun, "madethe best of it," and, "as is alwaysthe case, the race rose above it[all]", Gallagher said.
Other first place finisherswere Paula Strom (Women A),Erica Partridge Osguthorpe(Women B), Denny Kalar (MenB), and Jay Bartlett (Men C). Therest of the series should be ablast.

About fifteen years ago, whileriding an indoor trainer at home inAlta in an effort to try to get someearly season fitness in my legs, Ifirst dreamed of the details of theperfect indoor training system.Watching Lemond winning theTour video over and over again, Ienvisioned something based onsimilar video that was directlyaffected by my pedaling. As I ped-aled harder, Greg would pushHinault up the Alpe faster, thecrowd would yell louder, Philwould get more excited. And itwould be automatically showingmy workout data, so I could getfaster. I wrote down a detailedoutline over three pages of a legalpad. And I was sure someone elsehad already thought of it and itsrelease was imminent…
IXR, the company I founded,publicly showed the first prototypeExerscape at Interbike 1995, run-ning on the ill-fated Panasonic3DO Multiplayer. The 3DO wasthe first machine with the horse-power to play back about 2/3rds ofa screen of digital video at a full30 frames per second. PCs at thistime could only do a quarter-screen at 15 frames per second.The bottom third held a workoutdata "dashboard". The CD-based3DO could hold about 30 minutesof blocky CinePack video. Thiswas the state of the art six yearsago! The 3DO game player died along slow death when Panasonicstopped backing it.
Lesson #1: $100 million in1995 didn't get Panasonic much inthe way of brand recognition.How many of you remember thename "3DO"? Kind of makes the$76 million Pacific paid for theSchwinn and GT brands lookcheap! And when the giant com-pany backing your horse getspissed and drops them, it drops lit-tle ole you, too.
We then refocused and started
moving the Exerscape program tothe Windows PC platform, plan-ning to use the new DVD discs tocarry hours of video. DVD wassupposed to hit it big in 1997. Itwas a couple of years late, but isnow a success, with nearly 50 mil-lion DVD PCs out there. And thesudden rise of the Internet hasadded the potential for whole newlevels of interactive communica-tion and video delivery possibili-ties.
Last fall, Exerscape was finallyselling on shop floors across thecountry as the BlackburnMotivator. As part of the $220million Bell Sports umbrella, wethought we were on our way tosuccess. We beat everyone to thepunch, although a couple of imita-tors have now appeared and wewill have to defend our patents.With a nice big company behindus, one that was reputed to be verystrong financially, we were look-ing forward to making a decentsized mark on the world.
Lesson #2: Without support bythe top levels of your distributorand regular face to face meetingswith them, your product's market-ing dollars can be aced out byinternal politics. And, even worse,the same senior managementcould run your horse into theground. All things you have nocontrol over.
So, instead of selling 1500units, our planned breakevenpoint, we sold only 650 as Bellwent through financial trauma thatcaused them shut down their
Hydrapack, Rhode Gear, Vistalite,and Blackburn brands. With thefinancial markets also going south,it’s been tough to raise any fund-ing to take up the slack. So we arejust plodding along at a subsis-tence level and trying to do somecool Olympic sponsor projects andother fun stuff using the Exerscapetechnology.
I believe it is still too early, thatit is going to take the power andflexibility of a PC in the livingroom in the form of a game playeror set top box, to really create amarket for this type of system. Ithas to be as easy as a VCR. . ThisChristmas's new Microsoft Xboxis the next player up. We aremoving in that direction and alsotowards adding Exerscape to thenew Cyclops Etrainer, the Cateyefitness bikes, and interfaces to theComputrainers, Tacx, and otherinteractive trainers and treads nowout there. Anything to get morepeople enjoying it.
Time will tell. Whenever thingslook particularly grim, I remindmyself of the guy who inventedthe airbag. It took 20 years, butnow airbags are in every car. Ithink that’s Lesson 3: Patience,with intensely focused, timelyefforts. Watch, cover and wait forthose times where you can makethose 100% efforts count. Becauseyou only have so many matches toburn. Now that’s a lesson straightout of bike racing!

CHAMPIONSCROWNED IN 2001 INTERMOUNTAIN CUP
After 12 events and sixmonths of racing in Utah andWyoming, the IntermountainCup Mountain Bike RacingSeries racers competed in thefinal event of the 2001 season onAugust 18 in Evanston,Wyoming. In 17 categories rac-ers have been battling all seasonfor the designation ofIntermountain Cup Champion.Racers have fought it out in suchvenues as St. George, BrianHead, Deer Valley, Snowbird,Solitude, Powder Mountain andJackson Hole.
Cris Fox (Guthrie) and KristiMcilmoil (Dixie Desert) toppedthe men’s and women’s proranks. Honorable mention goesout to 2nd place Pro Racer SallyWarner (Canyon Bicycles), as
she never placed lower than 2ndplace throughout the season.
As for Men 16-18, TylerTurkington (Young Riders) andDerek Telleson (Diamond Peak)won in the Expert and Sport cat-egories respectively. Jeff Bates(Wild Rose) came from behindto win the Expert Men 19-29and Chad Wassmer (Cole Sport)nipped Ron Prue to win theSport Men 19-29 title.
The 30-39 Men’s categoriessaw Bart Adams (Titus) use his40+ years of experience to crushthe rest of the expert field whileJoseph Czop used four wins tokeep him on top of the SportCategory. The 40+ Men’s cate-gories showed tremendousgrowth this year and the hardfought battles ended up withBlayne Corwin as top Expert(after moving up from Sportearly in the season) and TracyNielson (Dixie Desert) as the topsport rider.
Men 50+ was dominated byDwight Hibdon (Park CityCycling) and his 7, yes 7, racevictories. In the Clydesdale cat-egory (210+ pounds) JustinGriswold slipped by AaronMullins (Taylor’s Bike Shop) totake first place.
The Sport Women 19+ cate-gory saw the top two womendicing it out for the entire sea-son. Kathy Sherwin (ColeSport) and Pam Hanlon(Jans/Trek) traded the first and
second podium spots severaltimes during the season. In theend, Kathy squeaked by Pam totake the sport honors. Bothwomen moved up to thePro/Expert category before theend of the season. Pam’s sportpoints plus her VERY strong fin-ishes in the last 3 pro races,placed her first in the Pro/ExpertCategory at the end of the sea-son. But, the rules state that rac-ers will be placed in the categorythat they raced the most races soPam had to settle for secondplace in the sport division.
Less than 50 points separatedthe first 3 spots in the Women35+ category. Patricia Garciaended up victorious while BarbClark (Young Riders) and CarmaOwen (Dixie Desert finishedsecond and third respectively.
In the Junior categoriesCarson Ware (Young Riders) andDerek Owen (Dixie Desert)dominated the 9& Under and 12& Under categories. The JuniorWomen 13-18 saw HillaryWright (Young Riders) end upnumber 1 by over 200 points. Inthe combined category ofSport/Expert Men 13-15,Andrew Downing (AardvarkCycles) ended up first by over150 points.

The incredible lightness ofbike stuff was another underlyingtheme. Several companies hadtheir feathers displayed on hang-ing scales, and by day three,there was this little undergroundwar to see who could claim thelightest bike. Cannondale had a14 pound bike that was helpedalong by a super light wheelsetthat apparently was used by Mr.Armstrong in this year’s hillyTour timetrial. At least that’swhat they told me, but thiswheelset had Campy hubs... andit shaved a couple pounds off thebike. Cool, where do we getsome? “Oh, you can’t actuallyget them.” So with a wheelsetthat exists, how much does this
bike weigh?Litespeed has a new two
pound frame that was displayedas a 14 pound bike. It’s the sizeof a BMX frame. Take half ofthat Cannondale away, and it’sprobably a bit lighter as well. Ah,marketing games. Funny, no onetalks about goofy stuff like ridequality, handling, stability or anyof that nonsense. May as wellthrow in a set of those two-piececarbon wheels.
Now I’m getting grumpy yetagain! So if you ask what is thebest thing I came away with?Oakley had the best LanceArmstrong poster, and I got acouple of those babies. And theImperial Palace automotive book-store had these cool Lancia pinsthat I brought back. Anotherexcellent trip to Interbike!

First rain in awhile yesterday.Leaves are changing. The 'crossheads are just starting their sea-son of fun. The road and moun-tain seasons are winding down.Utah's racing tradition continuesto grow each year. As part ofthat tradition, it's time forcycling utah to name its Ridersof the Year.
Success locally. Successnationally. Success international-ly. Two wins, three seconds, andsecond overall in the Inter-mountain Cup Series. 18th over-all in the NORBA NationalChampionship Series ShortTrack XC, 27th overall in theWomen's NCS Pro XC, and a12th place finish in the finals ofthe short track at Mt. Snow. Totop off the season, she earned asilver medal at the Master'sWorld Championships inBromont, Quebec, Canada in the30-34 age group. Even with allthat racing, she's workingtowards a doctorate in Exerciseand Sport Science at the Univ. ofUtah. Sally Warner is cyclingutah's 2001 Overall Rider of theYear.
Gabriel Blanco is young.He's got horsepower. With winsat St. George, Snowbird, and inthe Intermountain Cup Finals atEvanston, along with two secondplaces, plus 38th overall in theNCS series, Gabriel had a strong2001. He capped it off by beingnamed to the Argentine NationalUnder-23 squad for the 2001World Championships in Vail,CO where he finished 30th in
the Espoirs. Gabriel is ourchoice for Male Mountain BikeRider of the Year.
"Toughest racer out there."That's how coach JR Smithdescribes her. Like SallyWarner, she had results locally,nationally, and internationally.Lisa Peck had a win and two topthree finishes in the ICS, shecompeted in the NORBA NCS
Pro Women's category, and fin-ished out her dirt season with asixth place at Masters World's inCanada in the 35-39 category.All this, and she won LoToJa onthe road, started Team Biogen,and has been dealing with MSsince 1996. Lisa Peck is our
Female Mountain Bike Rider ofthe Year.
Maren Partridge stepped it upa notch this year. She had winsat the Sugarhouse Criterium, theGate City Grind Stage Race, sec-onds at High Uintas' and theCache Classic Stage Races, andsecond at Antelope Island.Maren Partridge-Osguthorpe fin-ished out the season as top dogin the Utah Cycling Associationpoints series and happily tied theknot with fellow road racer JohnOsguthorpe. She is our pick forFemale Road Rider of the Year.
All year, they were eachother's shadows. At HighUintas', Gardie Jackson wasfirst, Steve Tibbitts second.Cache Classic, they were secondand third, same thing at theCapitol Crit. At the district crit,Tibbitts first, Gardie fourth.Tibbitts won Snowbird and wassecond in the State TT. Tibbittsstarted his season racing pro inItaly. Jackson was 8th atMaster's Nationals. With onerace to go, Gardie is leadingSteve in the UCA Points Series,177 points to 171. Both had out-standing years, and both shareour Male Road Rider of the Year.
It keeps growing and grow-ing. The energizer bunny ofraces, LoToJa started in 1983with 9 racers. In 2001, theymanaged to entice 554 riders toride 203 miles, 65% more thanthey had in 2000. LoToJa is ourRoad Event of the Year.
With close to 2000 partici-pants, top-notch organizing, agreat venue, and a showcase fullof the world's best riders, thenod for Mountain Event of the
Year goes to the NORBA NCSRace at Deer Valley.
The ride raises several hun-dred thousand dollars forMultiple Sclerosis Research, andkeeps over 1300 road touristshappy for 2 days. What morecould you ask for? The MS 150Bike Tour is our Road TouringEvent of the Year.
Cindy Yorgason has beenaround the Utah road scene for along time contributing her ener-gy as a district representative forthe USCF, an event organizer,and as an official. This year, shehad the honor to work the HPWomen's Challenge, the Tour ofWillamette, the Boise Twilightand Morning After Criteriums,and Master's Nationals. We giveher recognition for that ascycling utah's Official of theYear.
Jeff Bates decided to raceseriously this year. He wonthree ICS events as an expert 19-29, wrapped up the points series
with one race to go, upgraded tosemi-pro, and then took fourth atEvanston. We salute him withour Most Improved Rider Award.
Last, but not least, cyclingutah recognizes an achievementthat no one would have imag-ined. Levi Leipheimer, formallyof Utah's Mi Duole andBrackman's teams in the early'90's, shocked us and the worldby placing third overall at theTour of Spain (see related articleon page 5). In his first start in aGrand Tour, Leipheimer was amodel of consistency in both inthe mountains and the time trialsand earned the full respect of thepro peloton. We present himwith cycling utah's Performanceof the Year.
