The price includes· 2 night’s dinner, bed and breakfast (sharing twin/double room)· Private function room for dinner each evening· Three rounds of golf: Southport & Ainsdale, Hesketh and Formby.· The prize fund
Southport & Ainsdale is a true championship course set amongst the dunes on the North Westcoastline and designed by James Braid. S&A was founded in 1906, and the passing of so many years hasbrought about changes, but the traditional feel of a championship links has been retained. It remains a finalqualifying course for The Open Championship. The course is a magnificent test, especially with the sea breeze and profusion of heather and gorse combiningto provide a challenging and immensely enjoyable day.
Hesketh is the oldest golf club in Southport, established in 1885. The course is pre-dominantly links in nature. In addition to being a previous qualifying venue when The Open was played at nearby Royal Birkdale,Hesketh has hosted many other professional and amateur championships. The course presents a challenge toall standards of golfer. Whilst pre-dominantly a links course, changes over recent years have led to the coursenow having a slightly more diverse landscape for seaside golf.
Formby's links are set amongst coastal sand dunes and towering pines. The undulating fairways areplanted with traditional rye grasses and flat lies are rare. Add strategically placed pot bunkers and frequentchanges of wind strength and direction to the mix and the new visitor will quickly discover why Formby is sopopular with discerning golfers. Formby Golf Club founded in 1884 and has been sensitively modernised overthe years, to ensure it remains a challenging but enjoyable test of golf.

Once described by “Rolling Stone” as “good asthe Beatles,” Squeeze remain defiantly tunefulwordsmiths, whose combination of story telling andcatchy melodies has always made them goodvalue for money. They may be conventional, butthey are very good.
There were two main gripes (I haven’t got spacefor minor gripes, such as the continued existenceof people who go to gigs and spend the entireevening sharing Facebook posts along the lines of“I’m at a Squeeze concert” amongst each other, instead of just enjoying being at a Squeezeconcert). Firstly, although the tickets stated “doorsopen at 7.00pm” it might have been more helpfulif they said “support act starts promptly at 7.30pm”.Because, amazingly, they did get John CooperClarke to start promptly, which meant for the nexttwenty minutes there was a constant flow oflatecomers who had to be escorted to their seatsin the pitch dark auditorium. Secondly, the concertwas due to finish at 10.30pm and as the last trainback to Leeds was 10.36pm I had to miss theencore as I wasn’t going to pay £30 for a taxihome. I knew this meant missing “Up the Junction,”because nowadays you can check the set list forany gig. So I can’t even console myself that theymight not have played what is in essence a brilliantcomplete kitchen sink drama condensed into threeminutes.Dr Cooper Clarke (as he insists on styling himself, due to some honorary doctorate or other) isnowadays more of a laconic Mancunian stand-upwith some nice, if often filthy, one-liners. None ofwhich is repeatable in a family publication like this.I would prefer to have heard more of his witty,fast-paced punk ‘poetry’, but he did trot out a fewof his more famous efforts such as the grim “BeasleyStreet” was followed by a nicely updated versionimagining a trendy boho development havingreplaced the original back to back hellhole.
Squeeze are riding on the crest of a wavenowadays, with their new album “Cradle to Grave”doing well in the charts, no doubt helped by its linkto a new BBC sitcom and the accompanying hitsingle. There is the usual dilemma for bands who
always think their latest album is their best, whereaspeople who have shelled out folding money for agig usually prefer a greatest hits type set list. To befair, it must be hard for bands to play a song theywrote nearly forty years ago and have playedhundreds of time, and not go through the motions, but they all know that if people are going to comeback they need to play quite a few familiar songs.
So they chose a well-balanced set, no doubtmade easier by the continued excellence of thenew songs. The acoustics were excellent, and theplaying and saying top quality, with the new bassisttotally integrated into the band’s ethos. And youreally can’t beat songs like “Labelled with Love”.It’s not an exaggeration to say that it bearscomparison with “She’s Leaving Home”. Thechoice of language and the skill of the lyricsenables you to paint a picture in your head andprovide your own backstory. And there were otherclassics such as “Another Nail In My Heart”“Tempted” “Black Coffee In Bed” to stop peopledeciding now was a good time to visit the bar.It was in 1978 that I first saw Squeeze at the ReadingRock Festival. I couldn’t have imagined then thatI would be watching them in Harrogate in 2015 andthey would still be at the top of their game. Theycould write a song about it.

I had been looking forward to this long weekendfor a long time.
It turned out to be a dramatic and horrifying timefor the world although it was only afterwards thatthe reality sunk in as to what had happened inParis.
The first stop was Dublin, where Abigail’s effectswere still felt at times with a rather weakhurricane skirting to the north of the island butstill providing enough wind and rain at intervalsto whip up the Liffey and cause people to scuttlefor shelter. I paid my pilgrimage to Sandycove, where Joyce set the opening of “Ulysses”. So wildwas the weather that I was worried that theband may not be able to make it over fromEngland. I need not have been concerned, andthe venue (the Academy, a converted cinema)swiftly became one of my favourites. Friendlyand attractive staff, a seated area for those whowanted a bit of a rest, great acoustics and sightlines, and alcohol you can actually drink. IfCarlsberg designed a venue, it would be like this, because the lager wasn’t Carlsberg. The bandwere great as always and it was only when I gotback to my nearby hotel that the horror of whathad occurred in Paris about the time the bandwas getting ready to go on stage was revealed. So everyone was rather sombre as the train wentup from Dublin to Belfast where it had beenraining steadily for a day and a half. Thatcontinued for the rest of the day. So with a strollaround the city out of the question, it was off to
Windsor Park for some footie, where amazinglythe game went ahead on a perfect playingsurface despite the fact that the national teamhad played a friendly the evening before. It wasa feisty local derby with the added spice of thetwo teams (Linfield and Cliftonville) coming fromdifferent traditions and both sides desperate fora win. The home team lost. And they played“Alternative Ulster” at half time, which was a firstfor me. The rain continued in apocalypticfashion.
Back to the city centre, and then into thesplendid Royal Ulster Hall for another rip-roaringevening. It is a fantastic place, with a selectionof artwork in the corridors to peruse, and asprung floor, which came in handy when thecrowd got particularly excitable. Stiff Little Fingersgrew up in Belfast in the 70s, when murder wasa daily occurrence. They don’t make anyreferences to politics as they recalled almost allgigs being cancelled “for security reasons” andsaw their job as giving locals the chance toexperience what those on the mainland take forgranted. But songs like “Wasted Life” and“Johnny Was” speak for themselves in theirtopical poignancy.
A tour of Belfast followed the next day, with anoticeable reduction in the numbers of flagsmarking out tribal loyalties and so much lesstension than at my last visit a decade or so ago.If I’d wanted to stroll along the Falls or the ShankillI could have done so. But they stress the Titanicand Game of Thrones connections now. Backto George Best airport to get home. And so two days after that Stiff Little Fingersbecame the first major band to play a gig inParis. The sell-out crowd chanted “merci,” somenot knowing that playing and giving people suchenjoyment in the face or murder and stiflingsecurity was something the band had beendoing in similar circumstances for nearly fortyyears in another time, another place, butshowing the same spirit of defiance to those whowould waste our lives.

BOOKING TERMS AND CONDITIONSHASSRA TRIPS AND EVENTS
The following terms and conditions will apply to all events to ensure that every member has a fair opportunity toparticipate in events. The terms and conditions should be read in conjunction with the relevant booking form.
1. Wherever possible events will be advertised with a closing date for applications that is at least 4 weeks from the datefirst advertised, including proposed events where expressions of interest are being requested.
2. Persons wishing to travel together should complete one application form per room, submit their applications together, and determine a lead person who will be responsible for forwarding payments due and act as the contact on behalf of thegroup via a signed disclaimer agreeing to these terms and conditions.
3. A booking will not be accepted or entered in a draw without the correct deposit and signed disclaimer.
4. Once the closing date is reached, the number of applicants wishing to travel will be determined. Where there aresufficient places for all applicants, then deposit cheques will be banked and places confirmed.
5. Members should be aware that once deposit cheques have been banked they are not returnable and travellers will beliable to pay full price of the trip (unless the place is subsequently filled). Full price means the undiscounted "nonmember" price. Where necessary, HASSRA (Leeds) will provide an invoice for the full price for insurance purposes buttravellers need to be aware that the cost of insurance, (if purchased), is non-refundable.
6. Travel operators will be asked to date insurance cover from the date on which they receive notification of the personstravelling. It is therefore essential to obtain adequate travel insurance before booking if you do not purchase theinsurance offered.
7. Single supplements. There will be no member discount on supplements for travellers wishing to secure a singleroom. Where members indicate on the application form that they are willing to share a room with someone of the samesex, the organiser will arrange for pairing. If an individual has indicated that they are willing to share, they will not have topay a single supplement even if no pair is available.
8. Where the number of applicants exceeds the places available, a random draw of application forms will determinethose successful in receiving a place, subject to Clause 8. Cheques accompanying these applications will then beprocessed. Remaining applications will continue to be drawn at random to determine the order of the reserve list.
9. The trip organiser will be granted up to two places on that trip without entry into the ballot. An organiser is the personwho arranges the trip on behalf of the HASSRA Events Committee, whether or not s/he is a member of the Committee.
10. Where expressions of interest have been sought for a proposed trip, if that trip is subsequently confirmed, applications received from those expressing interest prior to the closing date will be given priority to book before anyunfilled places on the trip are advertised. On these occasions, once the closing date is reached, remaining places will befilled on a first come first served basis.
11. Members who have been unsuccessful in a ballot for a trip may record this on their application for the next trip, to thesame destination, and will be given priority for available spaces.
12. Applications from solely non-member groups, i.e. not accompanying a full HASSRA member, wishing to participate inan event will be considered only in the event of places remaining after the closing date has passed.
13. The priority order will be: a) Organiser +1, b) Previously unsuccessful on similar trip (ballot if necessary), c) Priorregistered interest (ballot if necessary), d) Other Members, e) Non Member groups.
14. Non-members may apply to travel at the discounted rate on an event provided that they satisfy the criterion forassociate membership and send a completed application for membership together with the appropriate payment, on orbefore the closing date for the trip. Associate Membership will last for 12 months from the date of processing theapplication. The Committee reserves the right to determine specific criteria for prior membership on certain trips. Anysuch requirements will be notified in the advertisement. Participants are reminded to conduct themselves in anappropriate manner while attending HASSRA sponsored trips and events. Formal complaints may prejudice anindividual's eligibility for future trips.
