a letter from the editors of Icon Magazine

The endless hours of work and a plethora of Starbucks runs have

finally come down to what you are looking at now- the first ever edition of Pine Crest’s new fashion magazine, Icon Magazine. We’ve been hard at work creating these forty pages filled with insight into fashion, style, and beauty, and to finally see it come together is truly breathtaking.

Our mission is to give you- the student body- an outlet for expressing your ideas on fashion and publishing. Hopefully, and iconic legacy will continue long past our graduation in 2014.

Countless people are to be thanked for the creation of this magazine (get ready for a slew of clichés). First, our staff, we owe you more thank you’s than we could type here. Because of you, this magazine has come together so beautifully, and we can’t imagine what this magazine would be like without you (actually, it’d be empty!). Secondly, Mrs. Zingariello and Mr. Hoffman, you are the best advisors we could ever ask for. Your impeccable advice and guidance have helped us build this magazine and make it the best it can be. Lastly, all of you, for supporting us and reading this magazine. Hopefully, as you flip through the pages, you will be able to see all of the passion and time that have been put into this issue.

So please, enjoy! xx,

Laura, Leti, and Alana

COLOR CODED:burgundy

It’s the season of crisp leaves and hot chocolate once again, and we all know what that means- all sorts of autumnal, earthy colors fill the racks and shelves. This year, one of our favorites is burgundy, one of the more regal colors of the holiday season apt to conjure up images of late night

holiday parties and the smell of fresh cranberry bread. In fact, burgundy’s probably a lot more versatile than you may think: appearing on everything from loafers and boots to coats and cloches.

burgundy

Best paired with black, burgundy is ideal for holiday celebrations at dinnertime or after, offering a chic evening look with all the appeal of your favorite family traditions. If you’re daring enough, you may even try some burgundy lipstick to complement your outfits this season (Yves Saint Laurent has a great one!). Nothing says “winter break” quite like buying a cute, cozy sweater or finding the perfect holiday party dress... so be sure to splurge on both in burgundy!

winter wear

Page 9: Volume I Issue I

1 Who said Christmas sweaters are dorky? For weather not too cool, wear a fun winter sweater

with a pair of shorts. Throw on a beanie to get in the winter spirit!

2 Not liking the shorts look? No problem! A brightly colored sweater (with snowflakes!)

and a neutral color pair of pants make an outfit that is sure to get you in the winter mood.

3 Have a holiday party to go to? How about a cute little dress? An open back, although not

necessary, just adds to the fun. Très chic!

4Looking for a little glitz this season? Try out a sparkly sequin dress! A look like this will be

a showstopper at any winter or holiday party you go to!

5 Now is as good a time as any, if not the best, to rock that red lipstick. Fun and flirty, this

look is perfect this season!

6 Tights are a great way to add a little pizzazz to your outfit. A pair of tights with a great pattern

is sure to add some detail to your outfit.

7This bracelet is great for giving a glitzy edge to your wardrobe this season. The black leather

on the snap cuff and the shiny rhinestones work so well together!

8A delicate makeup look with a little edge is perfect for the winter. Apply some white eye

shadow all over the lid, in the crease, and below the brow bone, dark grey eye shadow in the corner, some mascara, and a light lip gloss, and voilà! Instant winter princess.

9Leather is as popular as ever! Leather skirts look great on everyone and can either be

dressed up or dressed down. They are so in style to wear this season!

10Not feeling a leather skirt? The classic leather jacket is just as great! Black, brown,

or any other neutral color will give a great effect to any outfit.

11Sometimes it can be a problem cramming everything into your handbag, but not this

season! Oversized clutches are totally in style. Day or night, the clutch is the perfect on-the-go bag!

12Boots just never go out of style. Whether you wear over-the-knee boots, ankle boots,

boots with a heel, flat boots, or any other type you can think of, they are amazing footwear this season. If you find the right pair, you’ll never want to take them off!

in the field As Digital Media Coordinator, Leya Edelstein, PC alum ‘07, is at the forefront of Giorgio Armani communications. I got the chance to interview her about how she got her job and what advice she can give to teens aspiring to work in this digital world of fashion.

Ali Oshinsky: What specifically is your job?

Leya Edelstein: I am the Digital Media Coordinator for Giorgio Armani. I work out of our corporate office in New York City and manage planning, buying, and executing the digital and social campaigns for all of Armani’s luxury brands in the US.

AO: Did you always know you wanted to go into fashion?

LE: I’ve always loved fashion, but I think very few people know the career path they’ll end up taking until they’re already in the working world. I ended up with my ultimate dream job - one that

combines the ever-evolving digital world and the fast paced world of fashion.

AO: What was your major in college and has it helped you?

LE: I graduated from Vanderbilt University in 2011 with a History & English interdisciplinary major. College is all about expanding your realm of knowledge and choosing what you love to study. Most employers look for hard-working interns from great universities. My major helped me think critically and creatively. Truthfully, though, college is a time where you have the opportunity to study what you love and find the professors who inspire you. Working hard and following your heart can never lead you in the wrong direction. Most people would never think that a major in history could lead to a job so focused on the future (technology).

AO: What’s your favorite/the most interesting part about your job? What’s the hardest?

LE: The digital world is constantly changing. In this position, I’m able to dream new ideas for Armani every day and bring them to life. For example, I spearheaded a program that made Armani the first luxury fashion brand to partner with Spotify! I also launched Instagram and Pinterest for Giorgio Armani from the US.

By Ali Oshinsky Images courtesy of Leya Edelstein

10 Icon Magazine

Page 11: Volume I Issue I

LE (cont’d): It’s difficult, of course, when some of my dreams can’t be actualized due to timing or other parameters out of my control. When any of our competitors do something I’ve been dying to do for Armani, it’s frustrating. That being said, those same difficulties ignite the fire that brings me into my office every day, coffee in hand, ready to make as many dreams come to life as I possibly can.

AO: How did you land your first job, and how did you end up at the position you’re at today?

LE: I was an intern at Giorgio Armani in 2010 and took every advantage of that opportunity. I became a perfectionist in my everyday tasks knowing that all eyes were on the interns, and praise was extremely valuable. I also kept in touch with everyone I worked for that summer and became an expert on all of the brands underneath the Giorgio Armani umbrella. When graduation was approaching, I knew exactly who to reach out to and where to lay the groundwork for references and potential job opportunities.

Just as I was eagerly interviewing for every opportunity that fell into my lap, I received a message on LinkedIn from my boss from my internship in 2010 that read, “Leya, how are you? Are you living in New York City? Would you be interested in hearing about a new position we’re adding for someone with your experience?”...that led to a series of interviews, which led to my current job!

AO: Do you have any other advice for people wanting to enter the editorial/PR side of fashion? What are some ways students can get a head start?

LE: Never stop dreaming. Never underestimate your own power and the power of everyone you meet. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, advice, and favors from those you encounter. I’m always eager to help passionate people who reach out to me, and I’ve found the same to be true from those that I reach out to. In media and PR, relationships are extremely important. Start viewing your relationships as the foundations of your career. Then work hard and always challenge yourself. Never go after anything you aren’t passionate about! I truly believe that passion leads to success.

defining lines

Some of us who wear eyeliner can relate to a certain situation… we apply makeup in the morning only to find, at the end of the day, the majority of our eye makeup has crossed into a forbidden territory. What may have once been a sharp, fine black line of glossy eyeliner seems to

fade into oblivion. Humidity and heat are usually the culprits in this situation. However, there are two products that promise to deliver a line that stays.

By Lauren SalamonImages from Google Images

The first product I tried was MAC’s Fluidline gel in the color Blacktrack, which promises a “long-wearing” and “smudge-proof” line. MAC, a company renowned by professional theatrical makeup artists, is known for quality beauty products that are not too expensive. This product is usually sold in MAC and department stores for $15. The product’s packaging is very simple, and the eyeliner itself is extremely matte with a somewhat dull finish. What the product lacks in extravagance, it makes up for in durability. It remains matte and doesn’t move once it has dried.

The next product I tried was Tarte EmphasEYES™ Waterproof Clay Liner. This product comes with a brush

and glossy, decorative packaging, and is sold for $22. I immediately noticed the color of this product was a more

pigmented and intense shade of black than the MAC eyeliner. According to Sephora.com, “Amazonian clay deepens the

intensity of pure color pigments”, and that was quite evident as soon I saw it. However, I noticed the product became dry

and less usable in the pot after a couple of weeks, which was definitely a negative.

The Winner: MAC Fluidline. It promises to be matte and stay all day, which it does successfully with no appar-ent flaw.

Shades of

One of the biggest makeup trends this season is the barely there makeup look. No more hiding under pounds of foun-dation, bronzer, and blush. It’s time to embrace your natu-ral face. Use a sheer, light BB cream to cover any minor imperfections and make your face glow! Just skip the blush and bronzer and you’re ready to go. This effortless, natural makeup is great if you’re always running around and don’t have time to apply (or reapply!) your foundation. Make a bright lip pop with this look!

Barely There Makeup

As the leaves start changing, it’s time to go with light, earthy tones. Black was popular last season, but lately, designers have been trading in the boring old gray and silver for rich browns and bright coppers. Now, anyone can rock a neutral smoky eye, and it’s perfect for school or any other activities you might have everyday. A nice brown palette is a must-have this season, and it’ll be a staple going into winter, as well.

Brown Smokey Eye

Summer was all about light corals and pinks, but now, as the temperature starts dropping, it’s time to start digging for the dark red lipstick that’s been sitting in your makeup collection for ages. This dark, vampy color really makes a statement and can turn any simple makeup routine into a sultry and sophisticated look. The best part? Anyone can pull it off. If you’re fair-skinned, go for a wine red that will really make your eyes pop. Darker-skinned girls should get a lipstick with brown, chocolate undertone to give their skin an effortless glow. (Tip: To make your lipstick last all day, lightly tap a napkin on your lips to wipe off the excess. Now the lipstick is more of a stain and won’t be smudging anytime soon).

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion

The Original is your best bet, but if you have light skin, use Eden for a slight tint, or even as a highlighter. Greed enhances warm shades of eyeshadows, and Sin enhances cool shades- you can actually just use them as eyeshadow on their own! They are also great at keeping eyeliner from smearing onto your lids.

Too Faced 3-Way Lash Lining Tool

Dab the triple-tip on your lash line to fill in the spaces between your lashes and create the effect of a fuller lash line. Use the three dots horizontally to draw a thin line, or use them on an angle for a thicker, cat-eye look.

Maybelline New York The Falsies Volum’Express Mascara

Apply two coats on top lashes and one coat on bottom lashes for a dramatic effect. Beware that it can get a little messy, so be sure to clean up with a Q-tip once your lashes are dry.

recap:fashion destination

By Sierra ConineImages captured by Sierra Conine

A breeze flew through my flat-ironed hair as I made my way from the red carpet, studded with photographers, to the glass doors of Saks Fifth Avenue. A young man opened the doors and welcomed me inside directing me upstairs. As I exited the escalator, I turned to

face the Saks dress department, home to thousand-dollar Dior and Alexander McQueen beauties, transformed into an aggregation of VIPs with drink and food in hand. The women donned elegant and edgy evening dresses paired with sparkling Jimmy Choos and Christian Louboutins, the notorious red soles catching my eye throughout the evening. The men wore sports coats and suits, and I fit in wearing my hot pink Robert Rodriguez dress with Jessica Simpson pumps. An overhead banner caught my eye, reading “Fashion Destination Miami Project Cure for Paralysis” and I remembered why I was here. Destination Fashion is one of Miami’s most noted and charitable fashion events. Nick Buoniconti, NFL hall of famer, started the Miami Project after his son, Marc, was paralyzed in a football accident. The foundation hosts Fashion Destination, an evening of mingling, catwalks, and VIP spotting, in an attempt to fundraise as much money as possible. I had the fortunate opportunity to attend this year, and even more incredible was the VIP status I was allowed to hold for the night. My father, Jeff Conine, along with other local and nation-wide celebrities, donated their time to be presenters of the Fashion Destination Women of Fashion, notable philanthropists for the cause. These women, along with their presenters, all gathered in the department store for cocktails and conversation before the event started. While wandering around the elegant dresses, I recognized some familiar faces, such as Wayne Newton, Miguel Cabrera, Tom Brockaw and Donna Torres, who were just a few of the celebrities in attendance.

Sierra and her friend Becca Marcus pose on the red carpet.

Enrique Iglesias, who headlined the event, gives high-fives to loving fans.

Page 33: Volume I Issue I

We all made our way to the outdoor banquet tables set in front of a stage, the weather uncharacteristically cool for a Florida night. The evening began with thanks to the many people who had helped make the event possible, including Christine Lynn, a twenty-five million dollar donor. As the lights dimmed, I noticed a stark-white catwalk that snaked through the tables, something I hadn’t noticed before. The head designer from Emilio Pucci, Peter Dundas who had flown in from Milan fashion week to present his collection for the first time in the United States, was introduced and the show began. Music began pulsing and the towering models made their way to the catwalk, displaying the beautiful clothes. The collection had an Asian flare that focused on black and white sheer dresses and bold accent colors such as red. After the show, the Women of Honor were announced, and they had the opportunity to walk the catwalk. The night continued in the Bal Harbor atrium, where the high-end stores of Louis Vuitton and Chanel opened for the night to attract the guests of the evening. Dessert displays were scattered throughout, and I made my way through the sea of people. The event concluded with an Enrique Iglesias performance, appealing to the characteristic Latin vibe of Miami. After Enrique’s closing song of “I Like It,” we all made our way to our cars; I was limping as I held my five-inch heels in hand, my feet in excruciating yet fulfilling pain. With a total of $31 million dollars raised, the event was successful in raising money and providing an unforgettable experience.

student spotlight:sarah galeFreshman Sarah Gale has shown the school her beautiful musical talent at Playing for Change, and she has amassed a large group of followers on YouTube, where she showcases her covers of different popular songs. Not only is Sarah a great singer with incredible style, but she is also a teen ambassador for Girl Up, a campaign of the United Nations Foundation that focuses on giving teenage girls all over the world equal opportunities. Catherine Gulley sat down with our newest inspiration to interview her to catch up on her music, motivation, and personal style.

Foreword by Alana SteinbergInterviewed by Catherine GulleyImages captured by Alana Steinberg

Catherine Gulley: How did you start singing?

Sarah Gale: I started singing before I could even talk. My first time speaking was actually singing Cookie Monster’s theme song from Sesame Street!

CG: What has been your best experience with singing?

SG: I always love singing—whether it’s in the shower or on stage—but I don’t get to sing in front of people much. In the last year I’ve only performed on stage once— Playing For Change! So when I get to perform, it is the best feeling ever, especially when people tell me they liked it.

CG: Who is your musical inspiration?

SG: I have several, and they’re super random. I grew up loving Demi Lovato and she definitely rubbed off on my style. I worship Ed Sheeran; he is just a genius. His lyrics are so ingenious, and I love how he has a soft, acoustic side and then a really cool urban style too! Also, Cher Lloyd has helped me find my genre and change my style in the past year.

34 Icon Magazine

Page 35: Volume I Issue I

CG: Why do you love to sing?

SG: I don’t mean to sound cliché, but singing is the only time I can completely shut my mind off from other things in my life and just focus on the music and lyrics. I basically sing my feelings; whatever emotion I have comes out when I sing. Plus, it’s fun! I just think music is one of the best things in life.

CG: How did you feel when you performed at Playing for Change?

SG: Backstage I was so nervous. I wasn’t nervous to sing, but I was to perform with my guitar. That was the first time I’d ever done that, and I’m relatively new to the instrument! When I went on stage, I forgot everything. I completely blanked out, but— thankfully—I remembered and I don’t think anyone noticed. It felt amazing. I always love performing, and I was so happy when people told me they liked it!

CG: How would you describe your personal style? Who are your fashion role models?

SG: My personal style changes so much, but I definitely always stay classy. My fashion role models are Eleanor Calder and Demi Lovato. They’re very different, Eleanor is so classy and stylish and Demi is a little bit more edgy and trendy, so I guess my style is a combination.

“...singing is the only time I can completely shut my mind off from other things in my life and just focus on the music and lyrics.”
