Inside this issue

The degree audit feature allows you to monitor your progress toward a degree. This

tool is available to students from their first semester at UD and remains with them

throughout their academic careers. The degree audit is built as a collapsible

advisement tool – as requirements are satisfied, sections of the report will collapse.

The report will become shorter over time, making it easy to view which sections are

still expanded and therefore required before graduation.

The What-If report is a valuable tool to assist students and advisors when a student is

considering a new major or minor. The What-If report can also be used to see how a

specific future course would fit into a student's current curriculum.

Step-by-step instructions for generating a report may be found at http://

www.udel.edu/registrar/helpdocs/StudentWhatIf.pdf.

Keep in mind that the What-If report is just one resource students may use when

considering their academic options. Using the tool does not take the place of official

advising or guarantee students admission into any program of study.

Other tasks you can complete in UDSIS include updating personal and emergency

contact information and requesting a change of major, minor, concentration, and/or

intended graduation date. For help using these features, go to: http://www.udel.edu/

registrar/helpdocs/students.html.

Alpha Phi Omega is a nationwide community service organization on campus that

actively provides service to the University, community and nation as participating

citizens. It is the largest collegiate fraternity in the United States, with chapters at

over 350 campuses. APO was founded in 1925 by former Boy Scout members who

wished to continue their service activities at the college level. The fraternity was

opened fully to women in 1976. Spring Youth Service Day is Alpha Phi Omega's

effort in participating in the Global Youth Service Day project with its partner

organization, Youth Service America. During one weekend in April, millions of

youth participate in projects such as tutoring young children, registering voters,

and distributing public health education materials.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Nicolette Kothe

Nicolette Kothe is a first-year UST student from Newtown, Pennsylvania who is making UST her academic home while she takes the prerequisite coursework necessary to apply for a major in Accounting. Although she loves being at the University, she admits that she originally didn’t even want to look at the school. “Both my Aunt and Uncle went to UD and I told my mom I

was going to go somewhere different. After my tour, I knew UD was the place for me. I could just feel it.” Now she can’t imagine herself anywhere else! Nicolette is off to a great start at UD, where she was named to the Dean’s List for the fall semester. She plans to earn 150 credits in four years so that she can sit for the CPA exam and become a Certified Public Accountant. When she isn’t in class, she enjoys swimming for UD’s club team and being involved with Alphi Phi Omega service fraternity. Nicolette’s advice for other UST students is, “If you can dream it, you can do it! Never give up on your dreams. If you work hard, you can accomplish anything.” Sharon Goldstein, Nicolette’s UST advisor, says she feels lucky to see Nicolette’s dreams coming true. “Nicolette is so enthusiastic and a ball of energy every time she comes into my office. You can’t help but smile when meeting with her.”

GET THE FACTS ON:

MAJOR: Computer & Information Sciences

MINOR: Entrepreneurial Studies

From its inception just a half century ago, computing has become the defining

technology of our age. Computers are integral to modern culture and are the

primary engine behind much of the world's economic growth. The Department of

Computer and Information Sciences offers the B.A. and the B.S. degree in Computer

Science and a B.S. in Information Systems.

Successful completion of a computer science degree requires strong mathematical

skills. Students in this major must complete several demanding math courses, such

as Analytic Geometry & Calculus, Probability Theory, and Discrete Mathematics, in

addition to core courses such as Data Structures, Software Engineering, and

Computer Architecture. Go to www.cis.udel.edu for more information.

A degree in computer science can open the door to careers in computer

programming, software development, and systems analysis in a wide variety of

industries. UD graduates may obtain jobs with government agencies, small start-up

companies, or major firms such as IBM, Microsoft, and DuPont.

The Horn Program's minor in Entrepreneurial Studies helps students acquire

knowledge and skills that are useful across nearly all possible career paths - from

starting a business to driving innovation within large companies. The minor

emphasizes experiential learning to provide students with first-hand experience in

developing innovative ideas and putting them into action. The minor is open to

students from all undergraduate majors. Admission is based on the availability of

seats. For more information, call (302) 831-4393 or contact Ms. Tricia Monnig,

Program Administrator and Advisor, at [email protected].

According to the U.S.

Bureau of Labor,

Statistics, software

developers are the

creative minds behind

computer programs.

Some develop the

applications that allow

people to do specific

tasks on a computer

or other device.

Others develop the

underlying systems

that run the devices or

control networks.

Employment in this

occupation is

projected to grow 22

percent from 2012 to

2022, much faster

than the average for

all occupations. In

2012, the median

annual wage for

software developers

was $90,060.

Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple, Inc., was a widely recognized pioneer of the personal computer revolution.

UST Dean’s List Fall 2013

Congratulations!

HABIT— an acquired pattern of behavior that is regularly followed

4

Three Habits of

Successful Students :

1. Be proactive. At

the first sign of

difficulty, they tell

someone (teacher,

advisor, healthcare

professional)

about the problem

and get assistance.

2. Be informed. They

read course syllabi

carefully and they

regularly check e-

mail and Sakai for

announcements.

3. Be organized.

They write things

down in a planner

and review it

frequently. They

keep class

materials together

in a binder that is

easily accessible.

The following UST students were named to the Dean's List based on attaining a GPA of 3.33 or above (on a 4.0 scale) for the semester.
