This is a great opportunity to recruit new members. All Chapter members should be able to recruit at least one new member this year. An application form for the Basic MOAA Membership is on the back page of this newsletter.

Chaplain Charles Currie (1926 - 2013) Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Charles Currie, US Army (Ret), age 86, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2013. He dedicated his life to the work of God and the spread of His word.

The funeral was held on Thursday, May 23rd in the Faith Chapel at First Baptist Church of Clarksville. He was buried with full military honors at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West .

The Military Officers Association is sponsoring the Auxiliary Member Advisory Committee’s Storming of the Hill event this coming July. This event is being used by the AMAC to educate Congress on the SBP/DIC Offset issue. The goal is the complete elimination of the offset. The current law allows the government to reduce the amount of dollars received by the surviving spouse from SBP by the amount received from the Veterans Administration for Disability Indemnity Compensation for the unearned income of the deceased spouse. I encourage Chapter members to contact their local national representatives to encourage their support of the elimination of this unfair offset. Summer travel season is here. Please be safe in your travels. The Chapter has several great meeting venues lined up for the summer season. I hope you take the opportunity to join us when in town. We encourage you to bring visiting family members and friends along with you.

DO YOU PATRONIZE OUR DIRECTORY ADVERTISERS?

Don't know? Look through your Chapter Directory, and locate the Advertisers that you even

occasionally visit. Then, whenever you visit their business, let them know that you saw their Ad. If you

don't find any, then consider those who might meet some of your needs, and give them a share of

your business. Our Directory Advertisers are an important asset for our Scholarship Fund, and we

need to keep them with us.

The May meeting was a memorable one. Sixty-two members and guests were in attendance to hear a very informative and entertaining presentation by our guest speaker, Dr. Timothy Hall and to witness the presentation of our annual scholarships. Dr. Hall spoke of the recent innovations at Austin Peay, all deriving from a new learner-centered approach to education that concentrates on promoting student success. This includes new, focused adviser services based on each student's demonstrated talents, interests, and past performance. The goal is to steer students from the beginning into majors in which they are likely to be successful,. Graduation rates are way up, and because of this APSU has been at the top of the new performance-based State funding program 2 years in a row. Following Dr. Hall's presentation, out annual scholarships were awarded to Stephanie Mellar and David Degan. Both of these fine young people participated in the Junior ROTC program at Kenwood High School. Stephanie will be attending Murray State University. David will be attending Austin Peay State University. Both will be participating in the ROTC program at their respective schools with a view toward future service to their country.
