64. All staff members, volunteers, and most of the guests were dressed in period attire as hundreds of people got together to remember World War II's "Battle of Los Angeles" that occurred

at this very harbor in February of 1942. It was especially fun for first-timer cadets!

Life As a Cadet; Ma r k s m a n s h i p , CAP Van Rides & Camaraderie BY: C/TSgt Ethan Stahl, CAP Squadron 64

When I first joined CAP, I knew very little about

marksmanship. Then, when I tried it out for the first time, I discovered that it was a lot more fun and interesting than I had initially thought. Before I started shooting, I had to take the NRA rifle safety course, it’s necessary to shoot rifles without damaging anything, and then came the fun part, shooting the rifles. It’s a lot harder than it looks. You have to establish a natural point of aim, that is, if you look through the sights, look away, and then come back, it should be in the exact same position. It’s also a lot more tiring than

The Emergency Services training season has begun. Group 1 held its first SAREX - DREX on February 21. Several more will be scheduled throughout southern California over the next few months. I encourage every one to attend at least one SAREX - DREX this year. Also, the CAWG evaluation is scheduled for May 15-17. EVERYONE should mark their calendar now to participate. This is one of the largest training events of the year. It will be a great opportunity to learn a new Emergency Services skill or brush up on one you already know.

it seems. You get 25 bullets per round, 5 in each bowl. But I wasn’t as bad as I thought, so I got a really good impression of marksmanship.

That’s not the only fun part though, because before we go shooting, we get lunch, and if you’ve been on van rides in CAP, then you haven’t been on enough, because you can never have too many CAP van rides. You joke, laugh, bond, and overall have a good time. Lunch is the same way, except with food, and what isn’t better with food? I never thought I’d realize that the best place to make friends is in a big white van while bumping along a dirt road, but I did, and I’m glad. I honestly never really expected to make any friends in CAP, but I’m so glad I did. And now I’m pretty in to marksmanship, and I encourage anyone with any interest at all to try it out! ~ C/TSgt Ethan Stahl
