The 2019 Christmas Tree Lot began with great enthusiasm. The first weekend of sales was very good and the Lot is full of beautiful trees. This year is a short season due to a late Thanksgiving so we have just three weeks to make this year’s Tree Lot more successful than last year. That means we need our amazing FCCNH “person power” in place throughout the week but es-pecially on the weekends. This coming weekend will be very busy as will the following one.

The Tree Lot offers a special opportunity for peo-ple to work together, get to know each other, build a church family bond and help children all at the same time. One of the great things about working the Lot is that it is a family affair. Children have a wonderful time sweeping and helping keep the Lot clean and orderly. And there is a job for everyone. Working the Lot is an experience everyone in our church family should have this Christmas Season.

There is another aspect of the Lot that needs im-mediate attention. Food! Food! And more food! Our volunteers need to eat and FCCNH has an abundance of wonderful cooks. Even if you can’t work the Lot, please sign up to provide snacks or a meal. We can all be a part of a great and continuing ministry. The children’s ministries throughout the country who receive our gifts continue to be very grateful for your dedication.

We have some marvelous events on the horizon.

This Sunday is regular worship at 10:00 AM and 5:30 PM, with Evenlight in the Chapel at 7:00 PM. I en-courage everyone to attend the Meet and Greet follow-ing the morning service. It is an excellent opportunity to get better acquainted with your church family and friends.

The following weekend is somewhat a whirlwind of activity. During the morning of Saturday the 14th, Operation Santa Claus will be taking place in the Social Hall. Ken Wilson and his crew of “Elves” oversee this program of giving toys to children and youth from families needing a bit of assistance at Christmas time. If you can help with Operation Santa Claus I know you will enjoy the experience. And as you bless others in our community you will receive a marvelous blessing as well.

Saturday, December 14th, in the afternoon at 2:00 and the evening at 7:00 our Chancel Choir will present their Christmas concert in the Sanctuary. This concert is always a special event, not only for our church family but also for our community. The choir has been work-ing very hard for several weeks preparing their gift of music to us. This is a concert you do not want to miss.

Sunday morning, December 15th, is one of the highlights of the year – our children’s Christmas pag-eant. Jennifer Le’au has been working for several weeks with the children preparing for their presentation and Ty Parr has been working with the children on the mu-sic. This pageant is always a highlight of the Advent Season.

I hope you will be able to enjoy all of these beauti-ful events as we look forward to the celebration of Jesus’

“Just A Thought ...” by rev. louise sloan goben

Three religions look to Abraham as the “father of faith”: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. And there are many other Bible figures that also appear in the Quran and in Islamic thinking. We will consider people from Adam & Eve to Jesus and John the

Baptist. Some of them may surprise you and hopefully all of them will enlighten you.

mondays 7pm or tuesdays 10am in the annex

In our Tuesday Bible study group, the question was asked, “What is Advent?” For some of us who were raised attending churches that worshiped using a high liturgy, we are accustomed to the “seasons” of the Church calendar. Such traditions would include the Catholic, Lutheran, and Episcopal churches, among others. And some of us were raised in traditions that are much less formal in their practices – including Baptists, many of our independent congregations, and Disciples of Christ (that’s us!) Over time, our churches became more familiar with how others observed special times of the year or days like Christmas and Easter, as we en-gaged in intentional dialogue. And the reality of today is that folks are much less likely to practice denomi-national loyalty, as they are to simply find a house of worship that “feels right.”

The Church’s calendar doesn’t necessarily corre-spond to the Gregorian calendar by which the secular world operates. There are many faith traditions that use their own system of marking days. There is a calendar used by the Jews, and they celebrate the new year in the autumn. It is known as Rosh Hashanah and we are currently in the year 5775. The Muslims also have their own calendar, which began with the establishment of the first Muslim Community in Medina. The Muslim year is 1441. And of course for Christians, we are in the year 2020. Our new year begins with the first Sunday of Advent, as we prepare for the coming of the Christ. Our “liturgical” or ritual calendar looks something like this:

Advent – time of preparation, begins 4 Sundays before Christmas.

Christmas – the Birth of Jesus observed on December 25, continuing until…

Epiphany – January 6. This marks the arrival of the Magi in Bethlehem. The days between December 25 and January 6 are known as the 12 Days of Christ-mas. Orthodox or Eastern Churches observe Christ-

mas on January 6.Lent – six weeks leading up to Easter Sunday. Lent

begins on Ash Wednesday and culminates on Holy Saturday. This is a “moveable” date on the calendar, as it is observed close to the Vernal Equinox, the first day of Spring.

Easter – begins on Easter Sunday and lasts for 50 days.Pentecost – is observed on the 50th day after Easter,

and recognizes the receiving of the Holy Spirit which animates the genesis of the Church. Pentecost is a long season.

All Saints Day – honors those who are recognized as having exhibited a special relationship to God, Jesus Christ and the Church. All-Soul’s Day follows and remembers all of our loved ones who have died in faith. This is observed November 1 and 2.

Then we begin again with the first Sunday in Ad-vent, and the four Sundays which lead to Christmas. The purpose of Advent is to help us focus our hearts and minds on the anniversary of the Lord’s birth, but also to look with anticipation upon Christ’s coming again to rule in peace. As we pray in the Lord’s Prayer, “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.” We are preparing and waiting for Christ to be revealed in our hearts and in our world. (This is the meaning of “revelation,” not the currently popular idea of the destruction of the world that is promulgated by some churches.)

During the Advent season, followers of Jesus are en-couraged to practice “metanoia” – a Biblical word that means to move our hearts and minds in the direction of a deepening relationship with God, our creator. Meta-noia comes from two Greek words “meta-” which means “beyond,” and “nous,” meaning “mind.” It is to step out of the usual ways of thinking and being in our everyday living, and instead to “put on the mind of Christ.” In English, metanoia is translated as “repent.” Repentance

is a process, not a onetime event. Again, in their origins many of our church-y words had very different under-standings from how we interpret things today.

My hope for you this season is that you might be able, from time to time, to step out from the busyness of the season – of work, school, shopping, planning, and the myriad of activities we establish this time of year – and spend time each day with your hearts and minds focused on what it means to live in Christ. This is who we have been called to be, as followers of Jesus.

May the hope of the season be with you.

CWF BAKE SALE • DEC 15th

Once again the ladies of CWF are asking for your enthusiastic support and participation in our BAKE SALE/FUNDRAISER! So dust off those rolling pins, dig out those cookbooks, stock up on red and green sprinkles and don’t forget the chocolate!

Please bring your baked goodies (preferably plated, labeled and packaged) to the Social Hall Kitchen by 9:30 AM Sunday morning December 15th and watch us turn them into camp scholarships, support for our servicemen, school supplies for local homeless students, and so much more!

PLEASE notE: Any items containing nuts must be labeled accordingly.

Thank you,The Ladies of CWF

It’s that time of year again when we roll up our sleeves for our annual toy giveaway for underprivileged children. Operation Santa Claus will be taking place once again in the Church Social Hall from 8am to about 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 14. We’re accepting donations of new, unwrapped toys but could really use funds that will be used for toy purchases — we spend a lot of money each year buying toys necessary to augment the donated toys we receive. When in doubt, gift cards from places like Target (perfect for teenagers!), in the amount of $15 or $20 are easy to obtain and are most welcome. Bring your toys to the church office and we’ll see that they are stored until the giveaway. If you’re writing a check, make it out to FCCNH and include the words “Operation Santa Claus” on the memo line.

This year, we’re also looking for some adult volunteers to help supervise Santa’s elves on the day of the distribution. If you’d like to volunteer, contact Ken Wilson and he’ll tell you how you can help. He can be reached by phone at 818.763.7310 or by email at [email protected].

did you know FCCNH has a Facebook page? Please check it out and Like us on Facebook. it is a great way to keep up with what is going on in the life of the church.

DECEmBEr 9 Prancer (1989, rated G)

Refusing to give up her belief in Santa Claus, a child, Jessica Riggs (Rebecca Harrell), discovers a hurt reindeer in the woods, which she believes to be Prancer. With the help of a sympathetic veterinarian (Abe Vigoda), Jessica takes care of the wounded creature. It’s supposed to be a secret, but eventually a store Santa Claus (Michael Constantine), the girl’s dad (Sam Elliott) and the entire town find out about Prancer, leading to big problems for Jessica and her family.

DECEmBEr 16Remember the Night (1940, NR)Moved to pity by the Christmas season, New York District Attor-ney John Sargent (Fred MacMur-ray) lets pretty shoplifter Lee Le-ander (Barbara Stanwyck) out on

bail and offers her a ride home to Indiana. Along the way they have a run-in with a Pennsylvania sheriff, meet each others’ parents, and eventually fall in love. John’s mother, however, disapproves, and warns Lee to stay away, lest she damage John’s career. Not wanting to cause trouble, Lee resolves to leave the man she loves.

As we begin the Advent Season today, we celebrate each day leading to the greatest gift ever given - the birth of Jesus. We could get caught up in the rush to buy the perfect present for each person in our lives. We could get frustrated by the Christmas Season. Instead, we can remember God’s gift and the blessing it is in our lives. We can remember that God trusts us to use our blessings wisely every day.

This Church is a blessing to me that I love sharing with you, my Church Family. I love singing in the Choir and sharing God’s Love with you. I am blessed to see each of you in the congregation and to pray with and for you.

There are many ways to share God’s blessings, such as the Trees for Kids and Operation Santa Claus. Now is the time in our service to share our offerings and prayers.

I greet you in the wonderful magnificent name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

You might have witnessed a high school youth (Joey Vallero) using his ASL acquired skillset (through foreign language courses in high school), to sign the scripture as it was read aloud this past Sunday. This illustrates how the great tradition of scripture reading was infused with the skillset of our youth today. Moments such as these leave our youth in awe of their church and make them feel very much a part of the ideas and traditions of the 10am worship service. Our youth love being included in worship and they love worshiping at the 10am ser-vice with you.

This Sunday the youth will make phone calls on your behalf, reaching out to bring the spirit of the sea-son to your loved ones. Dial-A-Carol is back. To secure your Dial-A-Carol, please complete the form below with all required information and leaving the singing to us! FCCNH youth enjoy picking up the phone, calling and talking with your friends and family and singing a Christmas song to them. Please support the Dial-A-Carol event. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.

(Luke Chapter 2, Verse 11)

The long-awaited Messiah has finally come, and he is bringing salvation. We celebrate this at Christmas. Christmas will make complete sense with Easter: the one who came in poverty and weakness, ‘wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger’ will die in poverty and weakness, hanging on a Cross while soldiers gamble for His clothes. But in doing so, He will absorb all that the darkness will throw at Him, and He will conquer evil.

Before He died in poverty and weakness with sol-diers gambling for His clothes, Christ asked His dis-ciples to remember Him by eating bread and drinking wine. A reminder that with Him we too can absorb the darkness that is thrown at us.

Caroling has always been a holiday tradition all over the world, bringing good cheer to those we visit with songs from the heart! Well, this time-honored tradition has made its way to our own church family at the Inaugural Night of Merri-ment!!!!

ALL ARE WELCOME…FAMILIES, COUPLES, SINGLES,

FRIENDS, FELLOW CHOIR MEMBERS!THURS . DEC 19 . 6:30PM - 9PM

6:30pm-7:00pm • We will gather in the Social Hall for drinks of hot cider, eggnog, and cof-fee/tea as we begin our caroling adventure to bring holiday cheer to the shut-ins/elderly of our church. At 7:00pm • We will caravan in groups, visiting 4 homes per group, singing carols to our shut-ins/elderly…or those that can use some “glad tidings”! 8:15pm • We will gather back in the Social Hall for a warm meal of soup & stew... YUM!!

Unable to go out caroling but want to share in the fun? NO PROBLEM! Those wishing to stay back can fellowship over some seasonal drinks, listen to holiday favorites, watch a holi-day movie...

I have been privileged to be part of such a“merriment” in years past, truly proving to be such a wonderful holiday evening of fellowship as we visited those who are not fortunate enough to enjoy much of what the season has to offer. We bring the “cheer” to “holiday” as we brighten the night of these beloved church members.
