It is indeed a great feeling and matter of pride to have been given the honour of commanding this unique Force. During the first quarter of this year we responded to various calamities, notably in the form of building collapsed in Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka, where NDRF responded promptly and rescued many lives. Besides,NDRF providedCBRN cover during Parliament session, 4"’ edition of India Aviation series and emergency coverage during various State level programmes. The commitment of NDRF during search operation in Bhutan was widely appreciated by Bhutan authority, local media and public. The9p Raising Day of NDRF was celebrated with great enthusiasm at NDRF base Cuttack. Odisha on 19" January. 2014, The function was inaugurafed by Shri Sushilkumar Shinde, Hon'ble Union Home Minister of India in the presence of Sh. Naveen Patnaik, Chief Minister of Odisha, Sh. M Shashidhar Reddy, Vice Chairman, NDM A, dignitaries of State Police and other organizations. The demonstrations of capabilities by NDRF during Mega Mock Exercise organized by NDMA in various places of North East States generated extensive awareness among general public. It was a proud moment for us that, 20 NDRF rescuers who have rendered exemplanary services during natural calamity in Uttarakhand and other parts of the country in 2013 were honoured by Prime Minister’s police medal for life saving. 1 hope that all the officers and men of NDRF will carry out their assigned tasks with utmost sincerity and dedication in future and always uphold our motto “AAPDA SEVA SADAIV”. I took over the charge o f Director General, NDRF on 27Lh Feb, 2014. It is indeed a great feeling and matter o f pride to have been given the honour of commanding this unique Force.

During the first quarter o f this year we responded to various calamities, notably in the form of building collapsed in Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka, where NDRF responded promptly and rescued many lives.Besides,NDRF providedCBRN cover during Parliament

session, 4"’ edition o f India Aviation series and emergency coverage during various State level programmes. The commitment of NDRF during search operation in Bhutan was widely appreciated by Bhutan authority, local media and public.

The9p Raising Day o f NDRF was celebrated with great enthusiasm at NDRF base Cuttack. Odisha on 19" January. 2014, The function was inaugurafed by Shri Sushilkumar Shinde, Hon'ble Union Home Minister of India in the presence of Sh. Naveen Patnaik, Chief Minister o f Odisha, Sh. M Shashidhar Reddy, Vice Chairman, NDM A, dignitaries o f State Police and other organizations.

The demonstrations o f capabilities by NDRF during Mega Mock Exercise organized by NDMA in various places of North East States generated extensive awareness among general public.

Disaster ResponseNDRF Rescue Operation in Vakola, Mumbai, MaharashtraOn 14th March, 2014, a seven storey residential building Shankar Lok collapsed and several persons were trapped under the wreckage of the building. Two teams o f National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) stationed at Andheri Sports Complex comprising 65 personnel rushed to the incident site with sniffer dogs. In a joint operation with Fire Brigade, N DRF teams rescued 04 victims and retrieved 07 dead bodies under the debris.

Collapsed Structure Search & Rescue Operation in GoaOn 04T1 January, 2014a five storey Ruby Residency near Canacona Vill-Chavadi, (South Goa) was collapsed and several persons were trapped under the debris. N D RF rescue teams carried out ten days long search and rescue operation and retrieved 17 dead bodies under the debris.

NDRF Rescue team deployed in Bhutan

On 08" March, 2014, 05 Bhutanese National (one contractor and four others including two boatmen)washed away in river Gongri, Bhutan when the boat they were on capsized between Pemagatshel and Mongar in Bhutan. Four persons managed to swim to safety. However, Sh. Tshering Dorjee (contractor) who was in his mid 60s, got missed. Subsequently, on requisition o f Bhutan authority N D RF team mobilized to Bhutan to assist Bhutan Authority in search operation . After five days o f through search in river Gongri in Bhutan the rescue team concluded the search as per the suggestion o f the Bhutanese Government.

Search Operation in Sultanpur, U.P

On 07,hMarch 2014, during construction o f basement in a complex near Baghmandi square, Sultanpur, (UP), laboures were trapped under the debris when loose soil (debris) fell on them. Fire Brigade personnel retrieved two dead bodies from the spot but one more body trapped in debris could not be retrieved by the Fire Brigade. Consequently, local administration sought the help o f NDRF. Team rushed to the spot, carried out two days long operation in life endangering conditions and retrieved the body. The Civil administration, Media and local people appreciated N DRF for its commendable job.

Rescue Operation in Bangalore

On 0 9 1 January, 2014 an under construction building at Kachar Kanali near Lingarajpuram, Bangalore, Karnataka was collapsed.On requisition o f local administration, N DRF team stationed at Fire Service Training Academy rushed to spot. Due to prompt response, team rescued 01 victim and recovered 01 body from the spot.

Sabarimala Festival

Two N DRF teams were deployed at Sabarimala, Ayyappa tem ple in K erala w .e .f 14/11/2013 to 19/01/2014 to facilitate local adm inistration to respond in case o f any emergency during the festival. N DRF team provided pre-hospital treatment to 413 pilgrims and shifted them to Hospital for further treatment.

Parliament House, New Delhi

N DRF deputed one CBRN team with HAZMAT Vehicle at Parliament House, New Delhi from 5 '1 to 2 1st F eb ru ary 2014 to resp o n d in case o f C B R N emergency.

Gangasagar Mela -2014On request o f Govt, of West Bengal, one N DRF team was deployed during Gangasagar Mela w.e.f. 10 -16"’ January, 2014 to respond in case o f any emergency.

Boat Capsize Incidents

1. On 28 ' January, 2014 a boat carrying 22 persons capsized in river Ganga near Chausa Bazar Ghat, Distt- Buxar, Bihar. N D RF rescue team conducted search operation and retrieved lOdead bodies.

2. On 14,h February 2014, a Rowing boat competition organized by Assam Traditional Sports & Dragon Boat Association in river Brahmaputra, suddenly a boat capsized in mid- stream o f river, N D RF team conducted search & rescue operation and safely evacuated 03 persons.

3. On 24 &25'1’ Feb, 2014 N DRF conducted rescue operation in connection with boat capsize and drowning of 02 student in Krishna river and retrieved dead bodies.

1. On 31'' January, 2014, a boy fell into a bore well at Vill- Neemgaon, Teh- Sri Rampur, District Ahmadnagar (Maharashtra).Local administration sought the help, N DRF team promptly carried out operation and rescued the trapped child alive.

2. On 23,d Feb,2014, on requisition o f DDM O Pune (M H) regarding falling o f a child into a borewell at Takhi Haj, Teh-Shirur, Distt-Pune(M H). N DRF team carried out S AR operation and rescued the child.

3. On 09thMarch, 2014, N D RF team while en-route to Gangtok to participate in mega mock exercise, provided CPR followed by oxygen therapy to 09 persons injured in a road accident.

On 19‘h January, 2014, 9th Raising Day o f N D RF was celebrated at N DRF base Mundali, Odisha. Hon'ble Union Home M inister Sh. Sushilkumar Sinde, was the chief guest and Hon'ble Chief Minister, Odisha and VC, N DM A were the guest o f honour. Hon’ble Union Home Minister, VC, N DM A and Chief Minister o f Odisha applauded N D RF for its commendable performance during numerous calamities through out the year. Hon'ble member o f N DM A and senior officials o f State Govt., local Police, students etc were present to grace occasion. An exhibition on disaster management equipment followed by demonstration on CSSR operations in a high rise building, CBRN capabilities, Canine show and various cultural programmes were organized. All dignitaries and public witnessed these out-reach programme.

MEGA MOCK EXERCISE IN NORTH EAST STATESOn 10,h& 131'1 March, 2014, National Disaster Management Authority (NDM A) in association with the State Disaster Management Authorities o f North East States organized multi-stage Mega Mock Exercise and awareness about the impact o f the hypothetical earthquake, N DRF demonstrated on quick response during an earthquake scenario. NDRF teams have spreaded awareness amongst the masses in various parts o f Northeast States to sensitize and make the society resilient towards earthquakes.The exercises were organized in different locations o f North East States, hospitals, residential complex, educational Institutes and Government Institutes. Honfble member & other official o f NDM A, NDRF, Civil Defence and local administration witnessed the mega mock exercise and found successful for stakeholders.

Rail DisasterOn 13/02/2014 a mock exercise on Rail Disaster was carried out jointly by N DRF & Railways personnel at Kota Station, Rajasthan, to enhance capability to deal Rail Disaster situation. About 350 personnel from Railw ays (including R PF) participated in mock exercise and benefitted.

CBRN EmergenciesOn 19“ & 20!h March, 2014 a mock exercise on CBRN emergencies was held by N D RF at Himachal Institute o f Public Administration (FI1PA), which was attended by 887 (Staff, workers, public and media) persons.

EarthquakeTo create awareness about the steps to be taken during an earthquake, On 29lh January, 2014, N DRF Guwahati organized mock exercises at BaniVidhya Girls Higher Secondary school, Agartala, Tripura and attended by about 985 persons (900 girls, 45 teachers, 10 Male & 30 female) & On 05Ih February. 2014 at various places o f district Aizwal, Mizoram, which was witnessed at large by about 2500 persons (Hospital Staff, School Children, Police, SDRF, Assam Rifles, youth Mizo association, fire Department, local NGO 's and others).

Chemical EmergenciesOn 18"' Feb, 2014, a mock exercise on chemical emergencies was organized by N DRF Pune for the employees o f Hindustan Petroleum Limited. 60 employees attended the exercise.

DiEMEx-2014NDRF in association with the Dibrugarh Emergency Management Exercise (DiEM Ex) conducted 03 days Search & Rescue Training and Field Drill from 03-051'1 February, 2014 at Dibrugarh University which was attended by 68 personnel (Police- 20, SDRF-10, Fire Service-13, Home Guard- 08, Civil Defence-17 and CRPF-01).

Demonstration/Exhibitions/Workshop/Participation in National /International Events

!. On 04/01/2014, N DRF organized a workshop on Disaster Management at the Institute o f Information Technology College, Pune (MH) which was attended by 45 students.

2. On 30/01/2014 a training programme followed by demonstration was organized by NDRF for the IPS officers at N D R F base Patna, Bihar.

3. On 06/02/2014, Indian Railway organized an orientation programme for N D RF personnel on design and safety measures ofrailway coaches at Ahmedabad coach yard which was attended by 102 NDRF personnel.

4. On 11 & 12th February, 2014 a workshop on Disaster M anagement was organized by N DRF at Sinhgad Institute o f Technology and Science College, Pune (M H) which was attended by 150 students.

5. On 15/02/2014, N DRF organized a training visit to 45 sailors including 03 officers from NBCD, school Lonavala, M H and made them aware about the capabi lities o f NDRF.

6. On 23/02/14 a “Pulse Polio Immunization” Programme was organized by NDRF Guntur for children of Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation, Mangalagiri, District Guntur (AP) and 227 children were immunised.

7. On 28/02/2014, a demonstration on disaster management rescue techniques was organized by N DRF at CTI, Mangeli, Jabalpur, Rajasthan.

8. On 06 & 07" March, 2014 a lecture cum demonstration on life saving skill was organized for the district revenue officials and other department by N D RF Arrakonam at Madurai collectorate premises.

9. On 15/03/2014 a mock exercise on earthquake followed by exhibition o f DM equipments was organized by N DRF at VIT University, Vellore (Tamil Nadu).
