When the man who wrote Pakistan's nationalanthem saw the divine in Hindu god Krishna

Malala gets accepted to Oxford University

This year, Pakistan’s 70th Inde-pendence anniversary and Jan-mashtami (the Hindu festivalcelebrating Krishna’s birth) fellon the same day: August 14th.With that coincidence in mind,I want to share a very uniqueUrdu poem: Krishn Kanhaiya.

This nazm is by Hafeez Jaland-hari, the Urdu poet most well-known for composing the lyricsto Pakistan’s national anthem, the Qaumi Taranah. Born inthe Punjabi city of Jalandhar(now in India), he moved toLahore following India andPakistan’s independence andPartition in 1947.

As its title suggests, KrishnKanhaiya is a poem about theHindu god Krishna. Today, themere idea of a Muslim poetwriting about a Hindu deityraises all sorts of emotionsamong different groups inSouth Asia: surprise, joy, curios-ity, suspicion, anger.

However, there is much moredepth to Krishn Kanhaiya thanmeets the eye. This is no ordi-nary devotional poem. Jaland-hari, ever a politically-mindedthinker and writer, draws uponthe mythology and persona ofKrishna in order to produce apoem that is simultaneouslydevotional and political in

nature.

It is, in fact, a call to liberateIndia from British colonialrule. Moreover, this poem, es-pecially when examined incomparison with Jalandhari’smore famous work, the QaumiTaranah, can tell us a great dealabout the cultural politics ofSouth Asia in the 20th centuryand today.

What does it mean that thesame person wrote both KrishnKanhaiya and the nationalanthem of Pakistan workswhich have such radicallydifferent cultural rootings?

In the end, we are left withmore questions than answers.Part of this is due to gaps in thehistorical record. Frustratingly,we don’t know when KrishnKanhaiya was written, or inwhat written work it was pub-lished. Did Jalandhari write itbefore he became involved withthe Pakistan movement andwas exposed to the Two-NationTheory? Did he write the poemafter migrating from India toPakistan? Without knowingthese details, I admit that it ishard to make an argumentabout cultural politics using thispoem.
