Volume XCI Issue No. 1 February/March 2014 A remarkable and Patriotic thing is going on right here in our city of Lynchburg. Beginning their 13th year, there are dozens of dedicated Veterans and citizens who get together EVERY Friday at Monument Terrace from Noon until 1:00PM to rally in support of our troops. is weekly rally was started by Vietnam Veteran Steve Bozeman on Friday November 30, 2001 to counter a small group of protesters who were against the U.S. bombing the Taliban in Afghanistan. A huge turnout of Veterans and Patriots kept showing up aſter that first Friday, so the rally continued. I was able to go to the rally on January 24, 2014, which was their 633 week, with the intentions of just taking a few pictures for the Post 16 Facebook Group and the Post 16 Dispatch, but I leſt with much more. When I was parking my car I noticed the thermometer on my dash was at 14 degrees. De- spite the cold temperature and frigid wind that sweeps up 9th Street, I found a huddled group of men and women waiting on the rally organizer, Steve Bozeman. Like clockwork, at a few minutes before noon, Steve’s van pulled up. Several men went over to help unload the “Honk if U Support Troops” sign, the updated “633 Weeks in a Row” sign, a “Soldier’s Cross” that WWII Battle of the Bulge Veteran Dan Weigand had given to the rally several years ago, and other items that are regularly set up on display each Friday. Larry and Marleen Lauder also had a canteen with refreshments set up for those in attendance. Depending on the time of year, the Lauder’s have fresh baked goods, hot chocolate, coffee, lemonade, tea, ice water and even watermelon on some days when the temps went into the 90’s. ey also bring a stereo and play patriotic songs. It was a real pleasure to see two WWII Veterans in attendance on that cold day in January. Frank Conte and Earl Washington were there to support our troops....70 years aſter they served our country. I didn’t hear one person complain about the cold and each had a look of determination in their eyes, especially those holding the flags over the curb of the street. Standing there watching what was taking place made me realize that I was surrounded by some of the best people in our community. I’m sure there are many people who have to work or are physically unable to attend this wonderful event every week, but I knew I was surrounded by those who believed enough in the mission of the Troop Rally to sacrifice their time to be there. Organizer Steve Bozeman not only gives of his time for the Troop Rally, he is undoubtedly at the forefront of Veterans issues and causes in our community. Veterans need these issues kept alive in the media and Steve does a remarkable job accomplishing this. Local news, WSET, has played a big part in covering the events at Monument Terrace and events at Post 16. ey’ve undoubtedly been responsible for getting the word out to bring people here for the weekly rally. At exactly 12:59PM the National Anthem is played at Monument Terrace as everyone in attendance salutes the American Flag. Steve then gets everyone together for a short talk before they leave. He also presents each new person with one of the Challenge Coins made specifically for the Troop Rally. See the back cover of this Dispatch for a picture of the one he gave me! Come get your’s! I have been out of town for part of December and much of January. My daughter Jess was married in December. She and her husband have been deployed to Afghanistan with the HHC, 2nd Brigade Special Troops Battalion (BSTB), 2nd Brigade Combat Team (BCT), 101st Airborne Division. Once again, I covet your prayers and am grateful to the Legion and Auxiliary family who have offered to help support Jess during her deployment. Unfortunately, I missed the Christmas Dinner in December, but I appreciate your support and commitment to the Auxiliary while I was absent. Please see the calendar below.

From the CommanderThanks to Ladies Auxiliary Unit 16 for the great VA&R Christmas Dinner on December 12, 2013. As always, it was well done and the food was great. The second order will be made soon for the Engraved Bricks for the Walk of Honor at the Purple Heart Monument. If you would like to honor a Veteran, please place your order before February 21, 2014 at 5:00PM. You can give your order form and payment to the bartender in the Social Club, which is located in the back of the Post home. You can also mail your order form, but if it is received after February 21, it will be on the 3rd order, which may take several months. A dedication ceremony will be planned once the bricks from the 2nd order are placed on the walkway.I’d like to congratulate the Monument Terrace Troop Rally for beginning their 13th year. Our Troops deserve our support and the camaraderie between the dedicated people at Monument Terrace is truly amazing. Steve Bozeman is to be commended for his dedication in organizing this every Friday. I want to chal-lenge everyone reading this to go to Monument Terrace one Friday to see what it’s all about. You’ll also receive one of the Challenge Coins from Bozeman.

All three men returned from Vietnam and lived in different parts of the country over 40 years ago. Somehow they ended up in the Lynch-burg area and members of Post 16. They soon discovered they had all three served together in the 1st Battalion 9th Marines (1/9) (AKA- The Walking Dead) in Vietnam over 40 years before. It became apparent that Divine intervention brought them together again af-ter so many years. Glenn and George were Marines and Jerry was a Navy Corpsman at-tached to the 1/9 Marines. We are honored to have these great men at Post 16.

We are now into the second month of the new year. How time flies. December and January have been very busy months in the Social Club. December we had our annual Christmas party and what a success it was. The music was provided by The Chase Band and by all reports everyone enjoyed them and the variety of food was great. I want to especially want to thank all of the people who helped to put on this event. I would start to mention all of them by name, but I am sure I would miss someone, so again, THANK YOU. Also a THANK YOU to all the bartenders who work very hard on these special events. The New Years Eve celebration was also a great success. Music was provided by The Bigun Brothers and everyone who attended seemed to enjoy themselves. Remember, we put on these events at no cost to you who support the different activities the Social Club conducts all year long.We have had some volunteers who have been preparing a menu for the Sunday football games. By all reports, everyone seems to have a good time and the turnout has been great. We are planning several events for the next few months. On February 10th will be having a music program with guests from The Summit. We are planning a dinner on Sunday, March 16th for St. Patrick’s Day. The Ho-Kiss Po-Kiss Band will return on Sunday, March 30th for another performance. The Social Club still has music on Friday & Saturday evenings and food is now available once again on these nights. We’re also consid-ering having food on other nights of the week. Food is also available during the day; with Hot dogs on the menu everyday. Other lunch menu items sometimes include chili beans, potato soup, chicken soup, and sloppy joe’s. Stop by for lunch and see what is on the menu. Thank you for all your support and remember all the people that work here are volunteers. They have time off work like everyone, but they always seem to come through and make the best of it. Please support them. Bob Woods, Club Manager

Food service in the Social Quarters on Fri, Sat, & Sun is doing good now. We would like to encourage more participation, so come on out and enjoy a good meal at a reasonable price. On Fridays & Saturdays we will con-tinue a special as well as open grill on most nights. We plan to continue Sunday afternoon food as football winds down and Nascar races and March Madness basketball heat up. On Superbowl Sunday we will have a “serve-yourself” day for a flat $5 and probably something similar for the Daytona 500. News Flash!!! Sam Parsons has offered to do Wednesday Westerns beginning after Feb. 1, 2014. Offered on Wednesdays will be regular westerns, cheesy westerns, hamburgers, and cheeseburgers. The success of all of the above depends on your participation, so come on out and support the effort. Food will be available for the Ho-Kiss Po-Kiss show and hopefully we will do something special for St Paddy’s Day. Check in the Social Quarters for updates. Loyd

Service Officer ReportBob Kibler has served our Veterans very well since Donald Mustard retired in 2012. After helping dozens of Veterans with their VA claims, Bob has now retired. Unfortunately, since the last issue of the Post 16 Dispatch, Donald Mustard passed away. He served his country and fellow Veterans very well. He will be missed by all. There is some great news! We have two dedicated Military Veterans who are ready to go to work and carry that torch that Bob Kibler and Donald Mustard carried so well. Sarah Maddox and Glenn Stantiford are a great team and we are very pleased to have them as our new Service Officers at Post 16!

The new contact information for the Post 16 Veterans Service Officers is:Telephone - 434-329-0039 Email - [email protected] (Please email if you need a specific appointment time)We will continue working on Tuesdays from 9:30AM to 2:30PM The office is located in the Post 16 home at 1301 Greenview Drive.

Sarah Maddox, Veterans Service Officer, Post 16Ms. Maddox holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master of Arts in Professional Counseling. She has been a Veterans National Service Officer (NSO) with over 25 years of claims experience. She has served as an accredited NSO for several congressionally chartered Veterans Service Organizations and the Vir-ginia Department of Veterans Affairs. She has also worked as a Child Support Enforcement Supervisor, Hearings and Legal Services Manager for DMAS, and an Institutional Rehabilitation Counselor. She is a Co-Founder and Executive Director for Mil-Vet Advocacy Project which is a 501C3 organization dedicated to assisting active duty and veterans with benefits and resources. She recently served as a Recovery Care Coordinator (RCC) for the US Marine Corps; assisting wounded, ill, and injured service members by developing a Comprehensive Recovery Plan (CRP). The CRP outlines the resources needed for each service member to obtain their desired goals as they transition to Veteran status. Ms. Maddox has a compre-hensive knowledge of the Disability Evaluation System as well as VA Benefits and nonprofit resources available to our Active Duty Service Members, Veterans, and their families. Ms. Maddox is an Army Veteran. She resides in Forest, VA and has a daughter, Tiffany Bergeron, who is married to a former OIF-OEF Marine (Bran-don Bergeron) and three beautiful grandchildren, Kaylee, Gabrielle, and McKinley.

Glenn Stantiford, Veterans Service Officer, Post 16Glenn will be attending the American Legion Service Officer Training February 2014 in Appomattox. Brian L. Mullican will perform the training. Brian is a District Service Officer for the State of Virginia. Glenn wanted to share his military experience with his fellow Veterans:Completing Marine Corps basic training in 1966, Glenn Stantiford was shipped to Vietnam in May 1967. He served with H&S Company 1/7 below Hill 55 south of Da Nang. In August 1968 he was sent north just below the DMZ with Bravo Company 1/9; where he was engaged in a lot of heavy fighting. He even crossed over into North Vietnam looking for POWs. Glenn earned the rank of Sergeant in only 2.5 years. The operations he was part of were in the A Shau Valley, AKA “The Valley of Death”; the toughest being Operation Dewey Canyon. The combat was intense in Dewey Canyon and it is now known as the longest operation in Marine Corps His-tory. Glenn went with two platoons to a place called Cam Lo to provide security for the minesweepers. On his first detail, his squad immediately started taking mortar rounds. After ordering his Marines to run forward in an attempt to avoid casualties, two of the Marines were hit with small arms fire. Disregarding his own safety, Glenn ran to help his two Marines; discovering one was shot in his shoulder. Seeing that his wounds were not life-threatening, he ran through a hail of bullets to the other Marine that was hit. Unfortunately, Glenn discovered the young Marine had been shot through his neck and was already dead. Returning through a hail of bullets, he returned to the other wounded Marine. From his right flank, he ordered a fire team to get behind the enemy to destroy them. The fire team killed the enemy, thus saving the rest of the Marines from certain death. In August 1969 1/9 received orders to leave Vietnam for good. They boarded ships at Da Nang and sailed off to Okinawa. Glenn stayed behind and went to Da Nang with the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing (MAW). Finally, in December 1969 he was shipped back home for discharge. He got a job with General Motors Corporation and worked there until he became permanently disabled in 1998.

Members of the Honor Guard take great pride in upholding their high standards and fulfilling their mission of, “Honoring those who Served.” This is a service we must continue for our veterans, however we need your help so we may continue rendering Military Funeral Honors to our deceased veterans. The Flag-Folding ProgramThe flag-folding ceremony represents the same religious principles on which our great country was originally founded. The portion of the flag denoting honor is the canton of blue containing the stars representing states our Veterans served in uniform. The canton field of blue dresses from left to right and is inverted only when draped as a pall on the casket of a veteran who has served our country honorably in uniform. In the U.S. Armed Forces, at the ceremony of retreat, the flag is lowered, folded in a triangle fold and kept under watch throughout the night as a tribute to our nation’s honored dead. The next morning it is brought out and, at the ceremony of reveille, run aloft as a symbol of our belief in the resurrection of the body.

Symbols for the Folds of the Flag 1st Fold: a symbol of life 2nd Fold: a symbol of our belief in eternal life 3rd Fold: in honor and remembrance of the veteran departing our ranks, and who gave a portion of his or her life for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world. 4th Fold: represents our weaker nature; as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace, as well as in times of war, for His divine guidance. 5th Fold: a tribute to our country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, “Our country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right, but it is still our country, right or wrong.” 6th Fold: for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all 7th Fold: a tribute to our armed forces, for it is through the armed forces that we protect our country and our flag against all enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic 8th Fold: a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor our mother, for whom it flies on Mother’s Day. 9th Fold: a tribute to womanhood, for it has been through their faith, love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great have been molded. 10th Fold: a tribute to father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since he or she was first born. 11th Fold: in the eyes of Hebrew citizens, represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies, in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 12th Fold: in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, the Son and Holy Ghost. When the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost, reminding us of our national motto, “In God We Trust.” After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it has the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under Gen. George Washington and the sailors and Marines who served under Capt. John Paul Jones and were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the U.S. Armed Forces, preserving for us the rights, privileg-es and freedoms we enjoy today. The source and the date of origin of this Flag Folding Procedure is unknown, however some sources attribute it to the Gold Star Mothers of America while others to an Air Force chaplain stationed at the United States Air Force Academy. Others consider it to be an urban legend. It is provided as a patriotic service to all. Source: www.legion.org - Flag Advocacy

On January 17, 2014 Steve Bozeman presented WWII Veteran, and faithful attendee at the weekly Troop Rally, Earl Washington a new walker. Seeing that Earl’s walker had a lot of miles on it, Steve called Frank Leonard at Post 16 to see if he had another one. There had been one donated a while back, so it was donated to Earl. If you have walkers, canes, or any other handicap equip-ment you’re not using, please donate them to Post 16 so we can give them to another Veteran. Thanks to Steve and Frank for helping this very deserv-ing Veteran! The nickname for Earl’s new wheels is ‘The Red Ball Express”. Come to Monument Terrace on Fridays 12-1PM to meet Earl and the other Veterans and help support out Troops!
