We are terrified of a moment of silence and, as a result, any sort of self-reflection. We can point to all that is wrong in our world (and there is a lot) but cannot seem to look inwardly with the same clarity. My brothers and sisters, Lent is our chance to do this. Lent is our chance to retreat with Christ into the desert and emerge with the joy of the resurrection in our hearts. Lent is our chance to once again center ourselves on Christ and the life He asks us to live. The mission of Roncalli High School is to educate in the Catholic traditions of spiritual growth, life-long

service, and academic excellence. Roncalli High School Mission Statement, adopted May 2012.

Volume XLI, Number 8 March 2018

“Remember that you are dust, and to dust, you shall

return.”

This is one of the formulas allowed on Ash Wednesday

to be said as you receive ashes on your forehead. It is my

personal favorite and I, as morbid as it may sound;

greatly look forward to hearing it every year. The words

carry such weight. Read it again and tell me if you feel

the same way.

There is something refreshingly sobering about these

words. When they are said, we are presented with a

physical truth that we all too often don’t wrestle

with…we are going to die someday. I can at least speak

for myself here; I don’t think of my own mortality until I

attend a funeral or hear of someone’s passing. Right or

wrong, it just isn’t something that enters my mind too

often. This is why I love Lent and think that you should

too.

Lent is not about giving up sweets or soda so we can

lose weight. Lent is about sacrifice and penance as we

remember that our end is imminent and that we are to

choose the Lord every day in order to truly live the life

we have to the fullest. In the season of Lent we are

called to self-reflection; how am I growing closer to the

heart of God? What am I doing to strengthen my

relationship with God? More importantly, what am I

doing that damages that same relationship?

Our world is so loud, so fast, and yet so deeply

unsatisfying. We indulge ourselves in the things that we

know won’t bring us life; however, we avoid at all costs

anything that will put us on the right path. We are

terrified of a moment of silence and, as a result, any sort

of self-reflection. We can point to all that is wrong in our

world (and there is a lot) but cannot seem to look

inwardly with the same clarity. My brothers and sisters,

Lent is our chance to do this. Lent is our chance to

retreat with Christ into the desert and emerge with the

joy of the resurrection in our hearts. Lent is our chance

to once again center ourselves on Christ and the life He

asks us to live. This is a joyful opportunity, not because

it is always happy, but because it will bring us the

fullness of life that we desire. Pope St. John Paul II said

this when he stated, “It is Jesus that you seek when you

dream of happiness.”

It is truly Jesus that we seek every day, and Lent is our

chance to truly dive into that journey. So jump in by

giving up something that will direct your heart towards

prayer, by seeking the Sacrament of Reconciliation to

right the wrongs that we’ve done, and by reminding

ourselves that we are dust, and to dust, we shall return.

In Christ,

Taylor Geiger

Items continue to come in for this year’s auction. As a

reminder, all contracts are due Friday, March 2nd.

There are so many wonderful parents, alumni, faculty,

staff, and friends working to make this a success.

Remember we have three exciting raffles:

Reminder: for every two tickets sold or purchased by a

Roncalli parent, you are eligible to be in a drawing for a

beneficial to our school and the success of the auction to

sell out of these tickets and hold the drawing at the

Intermission of the Oral Auction.

your trip through RCI! Choose from anywhere in the

United States, including Hawaii or Alaska. Enjoy 6

nights, 7 days vacation. Airfare not included. $50 a

ticket/only 200 sold.

These raffle tickets can be purchased in the

addendum.

Proofing of the auction book will be March 13th -15th.

Chairpersons will schedule a time to proof their area of

the auction book before it goes to the printer. On

Wednesday, April 11th, all soliciting committees will

meet to fill out bid cards and pick up auction books to

hand out with our thanks to all those who so generously

donated. This meeting will be held in the café at 6:00

p.m.

I want to thank you all for the tremendous amount of

Business Office

The full cost of a Roncalli education is just over

$10,000 a year. The Board of Trustees has

approved tuition at $6,100 for the 2018/19 school year

for Catholic students. Please keep in mind that your

tuition is discounted from the actual cost of educating

your students because of the significant financial

investment by many benefactors and local parishes.

Please make an effort to be a committed, year-long

member of your parish and a strong supporter of

Roncalli by generously sharing your time, talent, and

treasure.

All tuition must be paid through FACTS.

Roncalli will pay the FACTS fee for all

plans set up by March 16. After that date, parents will be

responsible for paying a one-time fee of $20 for the

annual plan or $50 for a monthly plan. Get started at

https://online.factsmgt.com/signin/404V1.

School Choice is now available to even

more families! Give each child the

opportunity to learn and thrive in their optimal

environment. Spread the word to families you know who

may be hesitating about choosing Roncalli because of

tuition costs. This program is for low- and middle-

income families on the Lakeshore. A family of four

earning up to $61,120 will qualify. Applications must be

complete by April 20. We all benefit when our children

succeed. Check it out! https://dpi.wi.gov/sms/choice-

programs/student-applications

Families who don’t qualify for the School

Choice program can still receive Tuition

Assistance. Our online application is on the FACTS

website. For all families who receive Tuition Assistance,

Roncalli will credit their tuition account for the $30

application fee. If you have any questions or concerns,

please contact Barbara Strawn at

[email protected] or 920-686-8139.

Special Needs Scholarship Program

Funding provided specifically for children

with special needs has proven to be very

beneficial for these students. Participants

must have an active Individualized Education Plan

(IEP). Students may continue participating in the

program as long as they have an IEP and attend an

eligible school. Application period opens July 1. For

more information, contact Barbara Strawn at

[email protected] or 920-686-8139

The tax reform law that passed

Congress in December 2017

included a provision expanding the use of 529 plans—

tax-free savings accounts that allow parents to put away

money for their children’s college education. Now, they

can be used for elementary and secondary education

too. Please work with your financial advisor to take

advantage of this new savings option.

Guidance Department

Course Registration - We will begin the process of

registering for next year’s classes in March. The required

classes along with the electives students can choose from

will be presented to each class. The 2018/2019

Educational Guide with a listing of all the classes and

Course Selection Manual with the requirements for

graduation will be published shortly. It will be posted

on the Roncalli website under Academics. Parents will

be notified when registration is taking place.

Scholarships - There are new scholarships coming in on

a regular basis. Seniors should check our website for

updates. I presented this to the students during Academy

in February. Seniors will be notified when the in-house

scholarships, available only to Roncalli students, are

posted. Students should check at the school they plan to

attend for that school’s scholarships. There are other

sites that have you create a profile; then you are matched

with different scholarships including www.fastweb.com

and www.scholarships.com

ACT - It is highly recommended that juniors take the

ACT in the spring of their junior year. They should

register for one of the following: April 8 or June 10. If

you have any questions about whether or not to take the

optional writing portion, please see Ms. Nickels, or

check the ACT website at www.actstudent.org. You can

also register on this website. It is recommended that

students select colleges to have their scores sent to when

they register for the ACT to avoid paying an extra fee

later.

Sophomores - Ms. Nickels will be holding Individual

Planning Conferences for sophomores and their parents

starting in March. These are not the same as

Parent/teacher conferences; instead, the focus is on the

student’s current talents, abilities, interests, their

educational and career development, and information to

begin planning for their future in a positive atmosphere.

More information will be forthcoming.
