Volume XX I Issue 1 Monthly Buckley, Illinois January 2015

We give thanks to God always for all of you,

constantly mentioning you in our prayers,

remembering before our God and Father your

work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of

hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. 1Thessalonians 1:2-3

St. Paul expresses so well the thanks my family

and I have for you the saints here at St. John’s.

From the start your faith and love in Christ were

expressed in such tangible ways to us: cards with

well wishes and prayers, helping hands to aid us in

our move (so many boxes and yet so many

hands!), kind gifts of food, money and gift cards to

assist us with the transition, all the hard work and

expense that went into improving the parsonage

and making it ready for our arrival, the speedy

response of the trustees with some needed repairs,

and all the personal encouragement and words of

warm welcome. We are overwhelmed and give

thanks both to you and to God for you!

While the world has already ended its holiday

celebrations on December 26, dragging the torn

shreds of wrapping paper and the tree to the curb,

we in the church are still celebrating the birth of

the Savior and the Christmas Season through

January 4; peering with the shepherds at that child

sleeping in a manger and singing with wonder and

awe, “What Child is This?”

And we will continue exploring the answer to

that question more fully as we enter the season of

Epiphany. Epiphany is the Greek word that means

“to make manifest” or “to reveal.” During this

season our Gospel texts reveals to us who Jesus is

and what He has come to do.

Epiphany is also known as the Gentiles’

Christmas, for it begins with the remembrance of

when the Gentile Magi came to worship the young

child Jesus in Bethlehem. What child is this whom

the heavens honor with the birth of a new star and

kings bow before? The LORD and Creator of the

heavens and the earth, the King of kings. Our first

Sunday of Epiphany will bring us to the Jordan

River and the Baptism of our LORD. What child

is this? The Father reveals the answer there at

those banks: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I

am well pleased.” Why is the Father well pleased?

For there in those waters Jesus is fulfilling all

righteousness for us.

Over the next Sundays we will see Jesus call

His first disciples, heal the sick, and cast out

demons. What child is this? He is Savior who

gathers His people and by those miracles gives

them and us little previews of the day when He will

make all things new and perfect. Epiphany will

end when we stand blinking on that mountaintop

and looking at the LORD transfigured in all His

divine glory. What child is this? He is God come

into our flesh to save us.

I invite you to come and have an “epiphany”

each and every Sunday as our LORD reveals and

makes manifest more and more of Himself and His

saving work for us. For it is here—where two or

three are gathered—that our LORD reveals Himself

in the Words of the Good News for weary souls

that return us to those Baptismal waters where He

fulfills all righteousness for us, washing us clean of

each and every stain. And where He reveals

Himself in, with, and under the bread and wine;

making manifest for us His body and His blood for

the forgiveness of sins, life and salvation, thereby

giving us a foretaste of the great feast to come

when He will make all things new. What child is

this? It is God in the flesh come to save you and

me.

A blessed Christmas and Epiphany to all!

Philosophy We, at St. John’s Lutheran School in Buckley, Illinois, believe that each child is a child of GOD; created by the Father, redeemed by the Son, and sanctified by the Holy Spirit. Therefore, empowered by the congregation and supported by the children’s parents, we teach using developmentally appropriate methods and practices. Pre-Kindergarten

Merry Christmas!! It's been a fun and

busy month for Preschool. We've been

focusing on the true meaning of Christmas. By

the end of December when asked what

Christmas meant they all answered "Jesus's

Birthday “ instead of "presents." We also had

our Elf on the Shelf "Fudge" come and

surprise us everyday this month. They all loved

shopping at the Christmas Shop for their

families and pets. I enjoyed seeing them so

excited about picking out gifts on their own.

Our Christmas parties were a nice way to start

break and I can't wait to hear how each and

every one of their Christmas' were!! Happy

Holidays!

Kindergarten

A lot of learning has still been going on

during this Christmas season. In the “regular,

routine” subjects the kindergartners have

been learning about such things as what is

required for a group of words to be a sentence

and how to add “s” to a verb for one noun and

how to add “will” for a future tense verb. They

continue to work with nouns and adjectives,

too. In math, the kindergartners have been

counting money with dimes and pennies, have

weighed and compared the weight of objects,

have sorted and graphed, and have put sets

and numbers in order. They've also talked a

lot about “change”...how people and animals

change as they grow and how technology and

machines change through the years.

The most important thing they have

learned, however, is that God's love for us

doesn’t change; it is eternal. Throughout the

Bible lessons of Zechariah and Elizabeth and

the birth of John the Baptist, the children

were reminded that God had a plan for them,

blessing them and using them for His plan of

salvation. God hears our prayers, too, and

knows what we need and when we need it. We

are included in God's great plan and need to

trust that He is better than we are at guiding

our lives.

We pray that the peace and joy that the

shepherds had will be yours, too. May God

bless you in the New Year.

Grade 1

It is hard to believe that school year is half

over! The first graders were as busy as ever

throughout the month of December. We had

so many things to do and so many preparations

to make. We prepared for our Christmas Eve

service by memorizing speaking parts and

songs, we made and wrapped presents for our

parents, and we made ornaments for our tree.

Most importantly though, throughout the

Advent season, we prepared to celebrate

Christ’s first-coming on Christmas morning, and

we look forward to His second-coming as well!

The first graders worked hard in math,

memorizing adding 2 and subtracting 2 facts.

We wrote letters and personal narratives in

English, and worked on sequence in reading. In

religion we learned about the prophets in the

Old Testament who told of the coming Savior,

and, of course, we studied the Christmas story

as well. In science we learned about weather,

seasons, and how animals prepare for winter.

We look forward to the many exciting learning

opportunities that will come our way in January!

Happy New Year!

Grades 3 & 4

The third and fourth grade class wishes you

a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. It

is hard to believe we are halfway through the

school year. We enjoyed all the preparations

of Christmas that took place in the month of

December; such as decorating the room, making

parents' gifts, memorizing parts for the

Christmas service, and singing Christmas carols

for the Ladies Aid. We hope that you and your

family have a joy-filled celebration of Christ's

birth.

The third graders are working towards

mastering their multiplication facts, while the

fourth graders are putting those basics to use

as they multiply greater numbers and perform

long division. In Social Studies, the fourth

graders have been studying the Northeast and

Middle West Regions along with their states

and capitals, while the third graders learned

about inventions that helped shape communities

in our country. Did you know that the first

skyscraper was built in Chicago?

Grades 5 & 6

Wow! It's already Christmas time. We

have enjoyed so much fun and learning in the

classroom. This past month, we lead chapel, and

our message was about why we decorate

Christmas trees and what many of the

decorations represent. We've also focused on

Advent during our class devotions and religion.

We enjoyed lighting the class Advent candles

and read our Advent devotional every day.

In literature, the 6th graders have been

reading "Bud Not Buddy," and ended the unit

with researching the Great Depression and the

1930s. The 5th graders have been reading

"Hatchet" by Gary Paulsen.

In English, we have been focusing on writing

with the ideas trait. We will continue with our

grammar lessons after Christmas break.

In History, we have been learning about

early cultures in the world. And, in Science we

have been learning about motion and gravity.

One of our favorite lessons each Christmas

season is with our class Christmas Angel. Each

year she comes and spends the Advent season

with us. Students can hold her and keep her at

their desks throughout the day if they wish.

They always enjoy looking to find her in the

mornings. The Christmas Angel focuses on

helping others and doing for others during

Christmas. Each year our class takes that

message and helps a family in need. The

students buy a gift for a needy family rather

than doing a gift exchange in class. They

always look forward to wrapping the gifts

Annual Chicken Dinner, Carnival, and Silent Auction

Sunday, February 15 3:30 P.M. – 7:00 P.M.

Dear Members of St. John’s: Once again it’s time for the annual fundraiser to support the children of St. John’s. We will be hosting our event on February 15 from 3:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. This event serves as our sole fundraiser and is imperative to provide the latest technology and resources for our students. We are in need of donations for our silent auction. Would you, your family, or your business be willing or interested in helping provide for the auction? In addition to items for the auction, we also greatly appreciate gift certificates, discount coupons, and monetary donations to purchase items. Please think creatively: Perhaps your family could put together a basket full of holiday items (Valentine’s Day, Christmas, etc.). Perhaps you could put together a sports basket, spa basket, movie night basket, rainy day basket, etc. Are there any goods or services you could provide (i.e. a certificate for 1-hour of house cleaning, 1-hour of your handy-man services, babysitting for 3 hours, etc.)? Perhaps you are an excellent cook, baker, seamstress, quilter, etc., and would be willing to donate something you have or could make. Do you have any relatives that own or manage a business and would be willing to donate a coupon, certificate, or item/product? Each year we are in desperate need of baskets to put donated items in. Do you have any baskets, of any shape or size, which you could donate? Any help that can be provided would be of great assistance. Please note that you do not need to donate a whole basket of items. Individual items that are donated can be combined by the committee members to make a complete basket! Donations are tax exempt-please contact the office for a tax exempt letter. In order to ensure we have adequate time to set up our auction items we ask that all donations (non-perishable) be given to a committee member or dropped off at school no later than Monday, February 9. If you are donating perishable items, please contact a committee member to make arrangement for pick up. If you have any questions or suggestions that can help with this event, please don’t hesitate to call the school or the event coordinators. Thank you so much for your support.

during our Christmas party and get so much joy

out of helping others. This year, we adopted a

family with three young kids, including a

newborn. The students have really enjoyed

bringing in their gifts throughout the month.

Grades 7 & 8

Can you believe we have reached the end of

the first semester of the school year? Most

of the seventh and eighth graders cannot. The

days are filled with so much activity that they

seem to just fly by. This month we were busy

trying to wrap up units in most of our

subjects. In English, we completed a chapter

on modifiers; in social studies our lessons

focused on life in the 13 colonies. Our science

lessons were based on the foundations of

geology and included the examination of the

fossil record, as well as learning about

uniformitarianism and catastrophism. At the

end of the month the class said goodbye to

Pastor Batchelor, who has been the 7 & 8 grade

religion instructor since the beginning of the

school year; Pastor Wyckoff will begin teaching

religion in January.

St. John’s Ladies Aid held its regular meeting

on December 4 at St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Children from grades K-4 presented a program

of beautiful Christmas carols, and the 7th-8th

graders played several Christmas songs on the

choir chimes.

The meeting was called to order, and Norma

Niemann and the LWML committee presented

devotions, “Return to the Inn.” The hymn, “While

Shepherds Watched their Flocks by Night” was

sung.

Roll call was taken with 23 members and 8

guests present. The minutes were read and

approved as corrected. Thank you notes were read

seminary student for a Christmas gift.

Four shoeboxes were sent by the Ladies Aid to

Operation Christmas Child.

Poinsettias need to be ordered by December

14. The committee will pick up the poinsettias on

December 19.

Rena Wagner talked about the need for new

members and asked the guests to consider joining

the Ladies Aid/LWML.

Glenda Weisenbarn reported that 32 people at

Prairieview participated in bingo last month.

Ruth Jones thanked the work committee for all

they have done and also thanked all the people

who helped with the recent funeral, welcome

potluck for Pastor, bake sales, and cookies for

Advent services. She also asked for volunteers to

sign up to work on the various committees for

next year.

Cards were signed for members, Carole

Wells, Julia King, Nadine Schumacher, and Viola
