Brother Knights, Catholic Gentlemen,
The next Parish Breakfast is on May 14th, which coincides with Mother’s Day. We expect a high turnout as mothers
eat free. An added feature this year will be a table with
Mother’s Day cards for children (and forgetful husbands). A number of regular volunteers will be absent so please consider helping with
the breakfast if you can.
The slate of 2017/2018 Council Officers is being finalized with elections planned for the June Council Business Meeting. There are several key officer
and program chair positions open. Please contact me or the Deputy Grand
Knight to discuss how you can help improve the Council. Officer Installation is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, July 8th. Additional details will be provided
as the event becomes finalized.
In addition, planning continues for the 2017/2018 Council Budget. Please be thinking about our current charity activities and opportunities for helping oth-
ers. We are also interested in additional fundraiser activities to help expand
our charitable endeavors. These topics will be discussed at our next two Busi-ness Meetings.
Finally, a reminder of a significant event: the ordination of Deacon Josh Altonji
at the Cathedral of St. Paul in Birmingham on June 24th. Father Josh will be conducting his first Mass at 11:00 AM at Good Shepherd Church on Sunday,
June 25th, which will include a Knights of Columbus Honor Guard. If you plan
on attending this Mass, please consider wearing your Knights apparel as a show of support to Father Josh and his fellow Brothers.
As always, please take time for yourself and family, aid where possible those less fortunate, and pray for those in need.
Vivat Jesus,
Steve Gentz

Happy Birthday to the following members who have
birthdays in May:
Family of the Month
The April 2017 Family of the Month is the Bill
Schultz family.
Bill, his wife Jan, and
their daughters Lisa and
Jennifer are recognized by the Council for their
exemplary efforts in sus-
tained support of fund raising activities. These
include, but are not lim-
ited to Bill’s contribu-
tions in purchasing sup-
plies for the Parish Breakfasts and Lenten
Fish Fries, helping with
food preparation at both
events, as well as Jan, Lisa, and Jennifer fre-
quently collecting money
during the Council and Assembly Fish Fry din-
ners. Bill and his family
are excellent examples of how a close-knit multi-
generational family can
aid the Council, help oth-ers, and enjoy the activ-
ity. This recognition is
for their continued ex-
pression of the Knights of Columbus core princi-
pals of Charity, Unity,
and Fraternity by serving as role models for help-
ing others through par-
ticipation and enjoyment.
Knight of the Month
The Knight of the Month for April 2017 is Chris
Nascone.
Chris is a seasoned
Knight with over 15
years of service, and a consistent volunteer for a
variety of Council events.
He is acknowledged this month for this support to
the Parish Breakfasts
and Lenten Fish Fries.
Chris is typically one of
the first to arrive, has repeatedly shown an
ability to react to rapidly
changing demands of
these activities, and is critical in their success
through his attention to
detail. He is always will-ing to help others,
whether they are a fellow
Knight, a customer at one of our fundraisers, or
someone in the church
or general community. Chris is an exceptional
example of the Knights of
Columbus principals of
Charity, Unity, and Fra-ternity. With every
Knight of the Month,
when you see Chris please extend your hand
in heart filled apprecia-
tion and thanks.

The Council made the following charitable contribution in April 2017:
Deacon Josh Altonji $500
Council 11672 participated in the annual Saint Bald-rick’s Foundations fund raiser for pediatric cancer re-
search. Our team raised $760.00. The combined total for
all the teams in Huntsville area raised almost $50,000,
with matching funds. The brewery ‘Straight to Ale’ pro-
vided the location and sold great beer and food. Ms. Lau-
ren Keck, a barber from the Salon Allure volunteered her time and skills during the days' event and cut
our shavee’s hair. It was a great time and a lot of
fun. Several family members and friends accompanied
our council members. In the photo from left to right: Back

SHORT STORY CORNER Submitted by Mike Rose
Most seniors, left to there own devices, never get
enough exercise. In His wisdom God decreed that seniors would become forgetful so they would have to
search for their glasses, keys and other things and
thus doing more walking. And God looked down and
saw that was good.
Then God saw there was another need. In His wis-
dom He made seniors lose coordination so they
would drop things requiring them to bend, reach & stretch. And God looked down and saw that was
good.
Then God considered the function of muscles and bones and decided seniors would not be able to lift
and carry a lot of weight. This required more trips
between the car and the house, thus providing addi-tional opportunity to exercise through more walking,
lifting and carrying. God looked down and saw that
was good.
So if you find as you age, you are walking, getting up and down more, and bending, reaching and stretch-
ing remember it maybe God’s will. He maybe telling
seniors to look for the good in every endeavor that they get involved with. Remember He has your best
interest at heart and He loves us!
God Has Your Interest
By Tradition, the Catholic Church dedicates the
month of May to the
Blessed Virgin Mary. This
devotion arose among Jesu-
its in Rome in the late 18th
century and quickly spread throughout the Western
Church. By the time of
Pope Pius IX's declaration
of the dogma of the Im-
maculate Conception in 1854, it had become uni-
versal. May crownings and
other special May events in
honor of Mary, such as
public recitation of the ro-
sary, stem from this time.
The prayer to the right was
written by Rafael Cardinal
Merry del Val (1865-1930),
the secretary of state for Pope Pius X. It reminds us
that Mary is the perfect ex-
ample of the Christian life,
who in her own actions
shows us
true love for
Christ.
Blessed Virgin Mary
For the Grace of Love
O Mary, my dear Mother, how much I love thee! And yet in reality how little! Thou dost teach me what I ought to know, for thou teachest me what Jesus is to me and what I ought to be for Jesus. Dearly be-
loved Mother, how close to God thou art, and how utterly filled with Him! In the measure that we know God, we remind
ourselves of thee. Mother of God, obtain for me the grace of loving my Jesus; ob-
tain for me the grace of loving thee!
Amen.
“There are nine requisites for contented living:
HEALTH enough to make work a pleasure;
WEALTH enough to support your needs;
STRENGTH enough to battle with difficulties and forsake
them;
GRACE enough to confess your sins and overcome them;
PATIENCE enough to toil until some good is accomplished;
CHARITY enough to see some good in your neighbor;
LOVE enough to move you to be useful and helpful to others;
FAITH enough to make real the things of God;
HOPE enough to remove all anxious fears concerning the
future.”

QUESTIONS OF THE MIND Submitted by Mike Rose
April Questions and Answers:
1. What is a Kerf, in
reference to a saw?
The narrow channel left
behind by the saw, and
(relatedly) the measure of
its width, which depends on several factors: the
width of the saw blade;
the set of the blade's teeth; the amount of
wobble created during
cutting; and the amount of material pulled out of
the sides of the cut. Al-
though the term "kerf" is often used informally, to
refer simply to the thick-
ness of the saw blade, or
to the width of the set, this can be misleading,
because blades with the
same thickness and set may create different
kerfs. For example, a too
-thin blade can cause excessive wobble, creat-
ing a wider-than-
expected kerf. The kerf, created by a given blade,
can be changed by ad-
justing the set of its
teeth with a tool called a saw tooth setter.
2. What is/are the
tooth/teeth of a saw?
The tooth/teeth of a saw
are the sharp protru-sions along the cutting
side of the saw.
3. What is the rake of
a saw?
The rake of a saw is the
angle of the front face of
the tooth relative to a line perpendicular to the
length of the saw.
4. What is the set, in reference to a saw?
The set is the degree to
which the teeth are bent out sideways away from
the blade, usually in
both directions. In most
modern serrated saws, the teeth are set, so that
the kerf (the width of the
cut) will be wider than the blade itself. This al-
lows the blade to move
through the cut easily without binding (getting
stuck). The set may be
different depending on the kind of cut the saw is
intended to make. For
example, a rip saw has a
tooth set that is similar to the angle used on a
chisel, so that it rips or
tears the material apart.
A "flush-cutting saw" has no set on one side, so
that the saw can be laid
flat on a surface and cut
along that surface with-out scratching it. The set
of the blade's teeth can
be adjusted with a tool.
5. What is a saw set?
Saw set is a term ap-
plied to various forms of a tool used in the tuning
and sharpening of saw
blades. The saw set is used to adjust the set, or
distance the saw tooth is
bent away from the saw
blade.
6. What is the rake in
reference to a saw?
The angle of a saw is the front face of the tooth
relative to a line perpen-
dicular to the length of the saw.
7. When discussing
saws, what does a web refer to?
A web is a narrow saw
blade held in a frame,
worked either by hand or in a machine, sometimes
with teeth on both edges,
e.g. a hack saw
8. What is the heel of
a saw?
The heel of a saw is the
part of a saw blade clos-est to the handle.
9. What is point of a
saw?
A point is the tip of a
tooth.
10. What is the PPI of a saw?
PPI stands for points per
inch. PPI is measured by setting the tip or point
of one tooth at the zero
point on a ruler, and
then counting the num-ber of points between the
zero mark and the one-
inch mark. Inclusive is the point at the zero
mark and any point that
aligns up precisely with the one-inch mark.
There is always one more
point per inch than there are teeth per inch (e.g., a
saw with 14 points per
inch will have 13 teeth
per inch.
1. Who was the first
Monarch of England to set foot in the United
States?
2. Which novel was
the first novel ever to be written on a type-
writer?
3. Which President of the United States was
the first sitting Presi-
dent to ride on a rail-
road?
4. Which President of
the United States was
the first sitting Presi-
dent to speak on a telephone?
5. Which President of
the United States was the first sitting Presi-
dent to ride in an
automobile?
6. Which animal has teeth that have the
same rank of hardness
as steel?
7. Which fish has green bones?
8. Which breed of dog
is the only one to have a black tongue?
9. During the 18th
Century and early 19th Century, what were
marbles called?
10. Which former
Presidents of the United States were
avid collectors and
players of marbles?
