Pope Francis made a historic visit to U.S and Cuba the week of September19. He gave a mass in Revolution Square, Cuba on

Sunday. He then proceeded to visit Holguin and Santiago de Cuba before he visited the U.S.

While in the U.S., Pope Francis visited Washington D.C, New York and Philadelphia. In DC he canonized Junipero Serra, the

founder of California, as a saint on Wednesday. He then became the first Pope to ever address a joint session of the US con-

gress. He made a speech at the UN summit in New York and a multi religious service at the 9/11 memorial on Friday. He also

gave a speech at the meeting of families in Philadelphia. While in Philadelphia he visited a maximum security prison and spoke

to the inmates.

Welcome our little saints from first grade. After more than thirty-five years of having this program, once again we

are excited to check out their presentation.

Mrs. Thiry is happy and excited that we can still offer this program to our parents, grandparents, and student body

at Epiphany School.

Each first grader dresses up as their saint. They not only work very hard at making a booklet about their saint, but

also on preparing themselves for a very festive prayer service filled with songs and prayers to the glory and honor

of God and their saint.

This past October 31 the students did their presentation for their parents and grandparents and on October 30 , the

entire school was invited to the prayer service.

Thanks to all first grade teachers and helpers for all your hard work. It was wonderful.

Epiphany School Shows Their Halloween and October Spirit By: Alexa R.

On October 30, 2015, the PK at Epiphany School dressed up and processed around the school courtyard. This Hal-

loween parade consisted of many adorable children dressed up as their favorite characters in bright colorful cos-

tumes. Some of the costumes included Star Wars characters, brave superheroes, princesses of many kinds, and many

more creative costumes. Parents and grandparents gathered to watch as the little PK students showed off their cos-

tumes. Some of the elementary and middle school classes also watched them parade around Epiphany school. Also, students in our school had a dress-down day in honor of October, the month for breast cancer awareness. Many

students from junior high, donated money during

the last week of October, because the money went

to a foundation finding a cure for breast cancer.

The entire school celebrates the month of Our Lady by praying the rosary as a group.

Growing Beyond Earth

By: Mrs. Latour and Mrs. Del Prado

Let’s say you get stuck in Mars with your food supply running out… What do you do? Ask our earth and space scientists

in 6th Grade! They are conducting investigations for the Fairchild Challenge’s “Growing Beyond Earth” which uses spe-

cial conditions such as a growing light lamp in order to duplicate growing crops in Space.

No, that is not a black light in the Science Lab. The lights are red and blue, which makes purple. The plants are growing

with it!

We planted 25 vegetable seeds with the sixth grade students during Space Week. We are Growing beyond Earth for

NASA and Fairchild Botanical Garden. The plant data is collected weekly and shared with them. We are helping to select

the vegetable seeds that will be sent to the International Space Station (ISS) and the Journey to Mars. Now, our Epiphany

School students are part of history. We are lab scientists for our future space travels. Enjoy the attached pictures and the

purple light in the Science Lab.

We will harvest our vegetables and make a salad. We will have trial 2 with different plants, which will begin shortly. The

plant rack and light will be in the Science Lab until our Christmas holiday. After the Christmas holiday, we hope to be

growing orchids, for another Fairchild Challenge.

We are fortunate to have several of our graduates and their classmates who have volunteered to lead and coach interested jun-

ior high students in many exciting activities. Contact Mrs. Latour and stay tuned for scheduled meetings after school.

We will be conducting a science fair in Epiphany! All junior high students are invited to participate in this fantastic event to

be held during Catholic Schools week at the beginning of February. Interested students are encouraged to attend Science Club

meetings or speak to Mrs. Latour for ideas. Websites will be posted with good suggestions for projects. Stay tuned! Students

who complete the necessary details by December 14 will be able to submit their projects for consideration in the Dade County

Fair.

EPIPHANY STUDENTS RISE TO THE CHALLENGE! Epiphany students who enrolled in Science Investigations elective this quarter are competing in the Lexus Eco Challenge

Phase 1. In this project teams of 5 to 10 students are asked to research, create and implement a program that addresses one of

a series of issues that affect our environment in a negative way. Phase 1 is Land and Water and the teams are expected to

make a Power Point Presentation that explains their chosen topic, give reasons why they are concerned and show how they are

doing something to alleviate the problem. We have the Kings from 8th Grade who are investigating water conservation and

safety and the ECS Warriors, a team of 7th Graders who are concerned with the damage caused to our oceans by dumping of

waste such as plastic and Styrofoam. Research and implementation are already under way with added enthusiasm fueled

by the visit to the US of the Holy Father Pope Francis who reminds us of our responsibility to save and preserve our planet!

We hope to have interesting presentations to share with all. In the second quarter we will continue exploring other great topics

It’s not Magic it’s Science!

For Halloween the fourth grade students were transported to the Hogwarts

School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. They were able to partake in an

experiment which required them to use more than just their imaginations. The

children had to work together to measure and combine several ingredients in

order to develop a Secret Potion. They made several colorless solutions change

from clear to a purple and then back to a colorless solution again. So was it

magic? NO, It was science! The experiment was a direct result of multiple

chemical reactions that occurred at the same time. While it was not magic the

experience was MAGICAL!

Experimenting with Worms

By: Alexa R.

Did you know that there was a 22 foot long earthworm found in South America? That’s about the size of a waterslide! Did

you also know that there are 2700 different types of earthworms in the world? Some of the elementary schoolers at Epiphany

learned these facts recently. They learned about worms and were able to experiment with real worms! They were given a dead

worm and a real worm. They had to observe both worms and try to guess which worm was the living worm. All the kids had

a hands-on lab as well. They picked up the worms and held them. The worms do not have a big mouth, so they cannot bite.

They use these microscopic mouths to eat proteins from dirt and some bacteria. This

causes them to filter the soil they live in, so farmers love them. Along with experiencing

the worms personally, the kids learned many

facts like these. All the kids were extremely ex-

cited to see the worms up close.

Epiphany School Goes Green

By: Mrs. Mendigutia and Mrs. Latour

“Green Schools Challenge”

Get into the Gold + Blue = Green spirit! Epiphany School is going green. Following the Holy Father’s ap-

peal to take responsibility for the care and welfare of our planet we are increasing our efforts to reduce, reuse

and recycle. The fifth grade has been conducting

their Collect and Crush Campaign by collecting

empty water bottles, crushing them to reduce the

amount of space they take up and assigning good

citizens to take them home for recycling. The Jr.

High is coming up with several projects to reuse the

bottles in creative and educational ways and use the

caps to make alphabet chips for the Pre K. Mrs.

Borell in the Science Lab has been busy and so have

the 8th graders. The Science Lab is full of examples

of such projects. Get involved Green Kings!!!

Our Students Pledge to Become a Green School

By: Alexa R

Recently, Epiph-

any Catholic

School took a

pledge to be-

come a greener

school. The stu-

dents promised

they would help

conserve water

and energy. We are participating in a green school program.

In this program, we have already taken the first step with

taking a pledge to help save energy. The teachers are going

to complete the next step, where they will walk through the whole school. The teachers are going to check if there

are faucets running in the bathroom to lights and air conditioning left on in classrooms. Here are some steps you

can take to help make our school a more conserving place.

Leaving a classroom that no one else is in? Make sure the lights are off and the air conditioning is also

turned off.

When you leave the bathroom, make sure that the sinks are turned off.

If you see any faucets leaking or toilets flooding in the bathroom, please let a

teacher or a maintenance man know!

Some 5th grade girls, leaded by their teacher, Mrs. Zayas, have been going to the

courts, collecting water bottles for recycling. They are also taking off the tops so that

the art teacher can make projects with the water tops. Mrs. Salas is also doing this in

her class in a big way.

Fourth Grade gets off at Platform 9 3/4!!

By: AnaCatalina S

The entire Epiphany Fourth grade has gone Hogwarts themed for Hallow-

een." The students participated in activities and their classrooms

"Magically" turned into Harry Potter's school.

Every day before they leave each Fourth Grade class tries to get through

another chapter of the Sorcerer’s Stone the first book in the world famous

Harry Potter series. Not only that, but each class has become a house. So

instead of 4A, 4B, 4C and 4D; we have Gryphen-

dor, Ravenclaw, Huffelpuff and

Slytherin. The entire grade now

has Hogwarts

themed decorations.

They also had to decorate pumpkins like

a character from a book. They

decorated fake pumpkins with

wigs, paint, hats, and some were

placed in cardboard decorated like the

setting of their book. They chose these

books and read them. Then they

dressed up the pumpkins like the main

character in their book. Each pumpkin

has a tag with the name of the book.

All the pumpkins are very detailed and

they look great. The fourth grade

teachers are very proud of the students

and their amazing effort.

The fourth grade class is learning about Florida His-

tory and took a trip to The Everglades Holiday Park.

They went on air boat rides, slogging through the

wetlands and explored this amazing ecosystem.

They enjoyed air boat rides, to get up close to the

plants and animals, in the Everglades Ecosystem.

They also learned more about Florida's National park

and the needs to be preserved and protected for years

to come.

Is the Lokai Bracelet Real or Fake?

Everyone is obsessing over this ‘authentic’ bracelet with an amazing message, but is all the hysteria really

worth it?

The Lokai Bracelet is an amazing bracelet. It

looks cool, it’s waterproof, and it gives an

amazing message. Supposedly, it has water

from Mount Everest and mud from the Dead

Sea, the highest and lowest points on Earth.

This motivates us to stay hopeful and to stay

humble. The Lokai comes in a few different

colors and styles. The pink one is to support

breast cancer, the camouflage bracelet is to help

wildlife, the blue one is to celebrate World Wa-

ter Day, and the classic one means to stay hum-

ble and hopeful. They are expensive but who

wouldn’t want to splurge on something that

goes to a good cause? This bracelet just seems

too good to be true..Many people are arguing

over whether the Lokai bracelet is fake or real.

To be real, it would contain mud from the Dead Sea and water from Mount Everest. Some people claim that there

is mud, just not from the Dead Sea. If this accusation were true, it would make this overpriced bracelet a lie. Oth-

ers claim the water evaporates, and that it probably true, considering it is sitting inside of a bracelet with possible

holes so it may leak. If you find a Lokai for sale at a price under $18, the original price, it is probably fake because

you get what pay for. An article from Carousell states some ways that may help you distinguish a fake Lokai from a real

one. (Shown below)

“2) The water drop logo on the tag of the bracelet. • It should only be a dark grayish colour and not any other col-

ours (e.g blue and gray). There should also be a CIRCLE in the waterdrop, not a triangle.

3) The font of the bracelet sizing on the tag. • Size S and M have

lowercase letters. • Only Size L comes in uppercase letters!

4) Authentic Lokais have NO CLASPS. • They are full silicon

and do not have any clasps, hidden or whatsoever.”

Even if your Lokai is not authentic, there is no reason to fret.

They still give a great message and look great with most clothing.

Best of all, they come out amazing in pictures! They are easy to

purchase and support a good cause. If you are interested in buy-

ing one, you can visit their website (myLokai.com). Fake or real,

the Lokai is an amazing bracelet to wear on all your adventures.

The Rubik’s Cube Robot

By: AnaCatalina S

Mrs. Watkins, the ro-

botics teacher has re-

cently completed a ro-

bot that can solve a Ru-

bik’s Cube faster than

most human beings can.

It scans The Cube to

see where the squares

are. Then it calculates

the number of steps to

solve the cube. It then

begins to solve The

Cube normally completing it correctly in less than five minutes.

Kindness challenge:

A.J. Palacios, author of the book, Wonder, is hosting a kindness challenge for students of all grades – even college

students have become involved in it. She is encouraging classes to

perform one hundred acts of kindness and keep track of them by

filling a jar with marbles. Students in 5B, Mrs. Salas class, de-

cided to use bottle caps. They performed one hundred acts of

kindness in a six week period and informed the publishing com-

pany about this. The company sent a Certified kind certificate

which all of the students signed and a banner to place in our class-

room. The first 50 classrooms are going to enter in a drawing for

a free pizza party. They are in that drawing. For 5B, it has been fun doing this and reminding the stu-dents every day that kindness and how they treat other people is what counts. They are also being kind to the environment by spearheading a recycling program in school. They are recycling the water bottles from the cafeteria as well as the bottle caps. For Mrs.Moravec’s reading challenge they are using decorated

bottle caps to keep track of the books read. Congratulation Mrs. Salas, Ms. Moravec and 5B for your kind-ness.

Back to the Future Car visits Epiphany School!

Back to the Future, 30 years ago, predicted

many things that we will have by October

21,2015. The film has gotten some things

right but others not so much.

Nevertheless, our school enjoyed the visit of

the amazing car, and a look alike actor.

All of our students were very happy to see

the car and be part of “Back to the Future.”
