Richard also recently received two esteemed awards: one from the NYFD for helping to save a man who was in cardiac arrest with no pulse and not breathing; another was given to him by the City of Glen Cove for helping to save the life of a young woman who wasn’t breathing after overdosing on heroin. When he’s not helping to save lives of the citizens of New York City, Richard works for the Glen Cove Police Department as an auxiliary officer. The Downtown Sounds Concert Series revisits its roots on week five when a collection of local artists perform at the Village Square Plaza in Glen Cove on July 29 at 7:30 pm. Called "Rock the Cove," the event features local performers collectively known as The Dandy Men playing throughout the evening with special appearances by a number of up-and-coming local singers and songwriters. Heading up The Dandy Men is Andy Aledort, a Downtown Sounds veteran who performed this year during week two with one of his other bands, The Sidemen. Aledort has played with Dickey Betts and toured and recorded with Stevie Ray Vaughan’s Double Trouble and Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox of Jimi Hendrix' band. He has also sold over one million guitar-based instructional DVDs. Aledort will be joined by Chris Kinnear, a singer/songwriter and guitarist who first played with Aledort in Sea Cliff when Andy requested him to sit in. Chris returned the favor and after jamming together on several occasions, the two realized they had great chemistry so they now join forces whenever their schedules permit. For example, when Aledort and The Groove Kings tore down the house on week eight of the 2013 DTS series, Kinnear was right by his side. Also on stage as part of The Dandy Men will be popular local bassist Chris Crosby, Jason Liebman and Rich Rosch. The Dandy Men will serve as the back-up band for a number of special guests who will take the DTS stage at Rock the Cove 2016. These include Matt Grabowski, a Glen Cove native who performs regularly at local venues including the Glen Cove Mansion and View Grill. In 2016, Grabowski won the Gold Coast Art Center's "Your Big Break" competition, which saw 1,500 contestants from the Metropolitan Area display their musical talents. Lisa

Vetrone, a finalist from that very-same competition one year prior, will also be featured at Rock the Cove. Vetrone is a member of the New York Songwriter's Circle and has performed at renowned venues including The Bitter End, Cafe Wha? and the Village Underground. Brandon Lubrano and Jenn Gerrity round out the local artists who will be featured. From its inception in the mid '90s, one of the objectives of the Downtown Sounds Concert Series (formerly Jazz in the Square) was to provide a stage upon which local artists could begin their journey to fame. Through the years, the lineup has expanded and world-renowned performers like John Oates and Jimmy Webb have been featured. However, the local flavor is still present so if you want a taste of what's happening on the local music scene, be there to Rock the Cove at the Glen Cove Village Square on July 29. Renowned keyboardist, composer and producer Marvin Floyd will play in his hometown during week six of the 2016 Downtown Sounds Concert Series at the Glen Cove Village Square Plaza on August 5 at 7:30 pm. Floyd has performed numerous times in the 19-year history of Downtown Sounds and his shows are always high-energy events with multiple musical genres featured.

Floyd began playing the organ at the age of six after being inspired by his musician brothers. He was playing in a band by the age of 12 and writing and composing music not long thereafter. After a short stint at I.M.G. Records, he founded Nivram Productions, a recording studio in Glen Cove. Producing at his own studio allowed Floyd to further develop his musical skills and he also benefitted from performing with musical legends like The O’Jays, Lou Rawls and Aretha Franklin. In 2003, he won CD101.9’s New Artists Showcase and in recent years has served as the musical director for Hip Hop Princess Ashanti. He also joined Ashanti for a recent world tour.

Keeping the company of legends like Clark Terry, Quincy Jones, Al Jarreau and Michael Jackson has profoundly influenced Marvin Floyd’s style of playing. However, despite his worldwide acclaim, he always welcomes the opportunity to “act locally” by sharing his gift of love and music with his hometown. A good time is sure to be had by all, so do not miss this special event.

Summer time is one of the prime times for weekend garage and yard sales as Glen Cove residents use the opportunity to clean and declutter their homes and make a little extra money. “Everyone loves an opportunity to purge unwanted home items but not everyone is aware that in order to host a sale on their property, a permit must be secured from the Glen Cove City Clerk’s office,” said Glen Cove Police Department Deputy Chief and Code Enforcement Administrator, Chris Ortiz. “One of the other important rules is that people cannot post sale signs on public property. Each weekend our Code Enforcement officer collects at least 50 signs that are illegally posted on poles, at intersections and on City property as they pose a public safety issue by blocking driving site lines.”

So before residents post their garage sale signs and put tables out in the driveway, Glen Cove’s Code Enforcement team wants to remind residents about the importance of following the City’s guidelines for garage and yard sales.

After months of reviewing the budget page-by-page, the North Shore Board of Education unanimously adopted the 2016-17 Budget Proposal on March 31, 2016. Earlier this year, trustees agreed not to exceed the cap. On May 17, 2016, the community will vote on Proposition 1 (the 2016-17 School Budget Proposal) and Proposition 2 (the Capital Reserve Proposal) Proposition 1: School Budget ProposalThe 2016-17 budget proposal is $99,494,105.15, representing a budget-to-budget increase of 1.96%. The projected tax levy (the amount that is collected in local property taxes) is estimated at $84,498,092. Revenues including the LIPA payments in lieu of taxes (PILOT) are estimated at $14,996,013. The 2016-17 budget proposal maintains all current instructional, extra-curricular, and interscholastic programs. Proposition 2: Capital Reserve Fund ProposalAlso on the ballot on Tuesday, May 17th, is Proposition 2. The district is asking for permission to establish a Capital Reserve Fund for a period of 10 years that will be funded up to a maximum of $8.5 million.

Board of Education Adopts 2016-17 Budget Proposal

Proposition 1 and Proposition 2 on Ballot for May 17, 2016

If approved, the reserve will include the following building projects: Glen Head School: Replacement of 1995 boilers and 1950 septic tanks; renovation to the nurse’s office; air conditioning in the library and cafeteriaGlenwood Landing School: Replacement of 1950 septic tanks, exterior doors, and interior ceramic tiles; air conditioning in the library and auditoriumSea Cliff School: Replace windows on the second floor, exhaust fans in the halls and stairways; new flooring in the 1st and 2nd floor classrooms on the east side of the building; walk-in refrigerator and freezer; air conditioning in the cafeteriaMiddle School: Renovate boys and girls locker room; air conditioning in the cafeteriaHigh School: Entire cafeteria ceiling/LED lighting; replace sidewalks in the rear of the buildings and around the courtyard; air conditioning in the gymnasiumCentral Office: Re-pipe existing hot water heating system; excavate and waterproof entire perimeter of the building and foundation; install new generator to power building; level floors

Why a Capital Reserve Fund? Instead of incorporating the costs for these capital projects into future budgets which likely increases property taxes, a Capital Reserve Fund enables the completion of these projects without increasing the annual budget. We encourage you to stay informed about the school budget. Under the Board of Education section on the North Shore Schools’ website at www.northshoreschools.org, please see the minutes and videos of recent board meetings as well as the latest budget information. If you have questions, please contact your trustees at [email protected]. Listening to the needs of Glen Cove’s veteran community, the City’s Department of Public Works (DPW) mounted a restoration effort to address the maintenance needs for Monument Park. “In June and July, the department pressure washed the monument and coordinated additional beautification needs,” said Manny Grella, DPW Supervisor. A new irrigation system was installed and along with new greenery

Monument Park is located at the corner of North and School Streets and it is the site of many Glen Cove ceremonial activities that recognize the importance of veterans to the past, present and future of Glen Cove. Residents are invited to visit the park to see the beautiful restoration work and to remember those who have served and fallen.

Dear Summer Fan of Fiction, This weekend I read a wonderfully poignant coming of age novel THEY MAY NOT MEAN TO, BUT THEY DO by Cathleen Schine. The coming of age described is old age, and the title comes from a Philip Larkin poem describing the painful ballet parents and children find themselves dancing throughout the years. Joy Bergman is 86 years old and coping with the many losses that time has brought. Molly and Daniel- her children- and Ben and Ruby- her grandchildren- are coping with Joy and

their own complicated circumstances. Set largely in New York City, the novel is both cleverly humorous and starkly bleak as three generations of Bergmans look for solutions to life’s inevitable changes. Add the Bergman grandchildren’s legal and religious crises and you have a deliciously dark, thought provoking look into family life circa 2016.

The Holocaust Memorial & Tolerance Center in Glen Cove recently held a special event entitled, “Comfort Women: Truth, Acknowledgement and Healing.” The program focused on women who were forced to serve as sexual slaves in Nazi concentration camps and under Japanese military rule from Korea and other nations. Ms. Lee, a survivor from Korea, personally addressed these horrific acts that she and over 200,000 other women and girls endured as what were considered “comfort women.” Then referred to as “brothels,” in reality, they were rape campaigns. After Ms. Lee’s discussion, Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton presented her with a citation in honor of her amazing bravery and personal endurance over the decades.

Who Suffered During WWII. A special exhibit from the House of Sharing in Seoul, South Korea, featuring drawings by Korean women who suffered through the rape campaign, will be on display at the Museum through the month of April. The mission of the Holocaust Museum & Tolerance Center is to teach the history of the Holocaust through education and community outreach, as well as promoting resistance to prejudice and advocating for respect for all people. “The only plus side to training this much is that I'm able to eat like a horse!” says charismatic American Amanda Sobhy with a laugh as she details the punishing pre-season training programme she's embarked upon ahead of what will be just her second season as a full time player on the PSA World Tour circuit. Twelve months on from graduating Harvard University with a degree in Social Anthropology, Sobhy sits at No.7 on the World Rankings, a career high, and can reflect on a breakthrough season in which she went from strength-to-strength – reaching a first ever World Series tournament final in January and qualifying for the PSA Dubai World Series Finals in May before ending the season as an established member of the elite top eight. But the New York native, who recently celebrated her 23rd birthday, returned to training this month and immediately set her sights firmly on even greater accomplishments ahead of what promises to be a demanding and competitive 2016/17 season – when she expects the level on Tour to be even higher than before. “Looking back at last season I am very pleased with what I achieved,” said the left-hander. “I managed to fulfil my seeding or do better in every tournament that I competed in, which I am happy about. In addition, I was able to secure my ranking in the top 8 in the world and get to my first World Series finals – so to be able to do that in my first full year on Tour and first year out of college is something I am pretty content about. “But my focus for next season is to keep improving my ranking – I would love to crack the top five – and I’m really going to go after some of the bigger titles out there. “I know it won’t be easy because the level in women’s squash is so high right now. It’s awesome to have such depth and tough competition because it really makes you earn your place in the rankings but I think it is definitely going to be a lot tougher on Tour this year. “All of the players are so hungry now to get to the top, so it makes the game extremely exciting. The level of play has improved tremendously and nowadays, anybody can beat anybody so it keeps us on our toes, which I like. It adds a little

#Seasonreview - Sobhy Eyes Top 5 Spot In 2016/17

element of surprise to the game – you can’t predict anything anymore.” Playing with an attacking style that sees her go for broke from all corners of the court, Sobhy has become a fan favourite for her relentless all-or-nothing approach – an approach that led her to a runner-up finish in January’s Tournament of Champions in her home city of New York. But while the Boston-based star, who

now trains under the tutelage of former men’s World No.1 and World Champion Thierry Lincou, says that experience in New York will go down as the highlight of her career so far, she also points to a series of tough defeats as providing the extra motivation needed during those punishing pre-season training days.

“The Tournament of Champions was the highlight tournament of my career so far – to be able to get to my first World Series final at home in NY in front of a home crowd was extremely special,” she said. “I think that week everything just clicked, and of course it helped a tremendous amount to have such a boisterous crowd supporting me during every match. It made the atmosphere

unbelievable and made me that much more excited to play and focused to win. “But there were some very tough defeats last season as well. Playing Camille Serme in the quarters of The Windy City Open was brutal since that match lasted over an hour, which is very

long for me, and it was just relentless from start to finish. I lost again to her 11-9 in the fifth which was a bit brutal. “Matches like that, or ones where I lost quickly, were disappointing because I felt that I could’ve done better if I believed in myself a bit more. Some matches or points always stick with you in the back of your mind making you go a bit crazy, but I just try and take the positives out of it and learn from my losses and

mistakes.” And just what does her training schedule look like? “Training is pretty brutal – I’m not going to lie,” she says. “I’m training 6 days a week, 2-3 times a day with one session being on court and the other 1-2 sessions off court. “I’m in Boston all summer, which is so nice since I can just stay put and focus on training. Thierry and my fitness coach, Micah, have created a program to get me ready for next season, so I work on specific things like my movement and speed and then I’ll

spend a lot time doing more endurance based fitness or playing squash at the University Club in Boston, which is my base club. “As a result, I walk like a crippled 80 year old at the end of most days and I pretty much shower myself in Tiger Balm every day! But the food is a bonus!”

This week's celebrity was born on March 22, 1896 in Vienna , Austria. He moved to the U.S. in the early 1900s and appeared in many Broadway productions. In 1921, he played the title role in the first American stage production of Ferenc Molnar's "Liliom", the play that would eventually become the basis for Rodgers' and Hammerstein's "Carousel". In 1923, he starred in a notable, for the times, Broadway Theater Guild production of "Peer Gynt", a Norwegian fairy tale by Henrik Ibsen, with characters based on his own family members. Along with our celebrity, it featured Selena Royle, Helen Westley, who was Shirley Temple's "Aunt Miranda" in "Rebecca of Sunny Brook Farm (1938), Dudley Diggs and, before he entered films, Edward G. Robinson.

Our celebrity began working in silent films, although he did return to the stage occasionally. He had early success in films as the "Chevalier de Vaudry" in D. W. Griffth's "Orphans of the Storm" with Lillian Gish. Later, he was featured in Cecil B. DeMille's epic 1927 film "The King of Kings", as Judas Iscariot. His own father also appeared in the film. He also played a Viennese-accented, non-singing "Gaylord Ravenal" in the 1929 part-talkie film version of Edna Ferber's "Show Boat". For all those B&W holiday movie film buffs, our celebrity never lets his fans down when we see him as "Ferencz Vadas" in Ernst Lubitsch's 1940 version of "The Shop Around the Corner" with Jimmy Stewart, Margaret Sullavan and Frank Morgan. Our celebrity played the two-faced womanizer, attracted to shop owner, Mr. Hugo Matuschek's" never-seen-on-camera wife. He also played "King Herod" in Cecil B. DeMille's "Cleopatra" (1934), featuring Claudette Colbert in the title role with Warren William as Julius Caesar.

Last week’s celebrity was Tim Considine. He was born into a show business family. His maternal grandfather was Alexander Pantages, an early motion picture producer and impresario, who created a large and powerful circuit of theaters across the western USA and Canada. At the height of his empire, he owned

or operated 84 theaters. Tim’s paternal grandfather, born in Chicago, was Pantages’ rival vaudeville impresario, John Considine. Before he went into entertainment, he was, for a short time, a Chicago policeman, who was involved in the raid that led to the famous May 4, 1886 Haymarket Affair (also known as the Haymarket Massacre), which resulted in the deaths of seven policemen and no less than 4 civilian deaths and numerous wounded. Later in Seattle, John brought variety entertainment to a new level by importing Farida Mazar Sypropoulas, famous as “Little Egypt”, from the 1893 Chicago’s World’s Fair. At the time, the word “bellydance” had not entered the American vocabulary. It was first known as the “Hoochee-Coochee or “The Shimmy and Shake”. It was reported that in 1898, Mark Twain had a near fatal heart attack watching “Little Egypt” go through her paces! Tim’s older brother, also John, was an actor and their Uncle Bob Considine was a columnist for King Features Syndicate and co-author of “Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo” and “The Babe Ruth Story”, both eventually made into feature films. So, Tim’s ancestry did him no harm. Aside from his successful association with Disney Studios, he also had other film roles. He played FDR’s eldest son, James, ages 14-17, in “Sunset at Campobello” (1960) with Ralph Bellamy, Greer Garson and Hume Cronyn. He was also one of the two shell-shocked soldiers slapped by George C. Scott playing Gen. George Patton, in the movie “Patton” (1970), believing them to be cowards. In later years, Tim has done reunion features for “Spin & Marty” and “My Three Sons”. His first wife was actress Charlotte Stewart, who played “Miss Beadle” on TV’s “Little House on the Prairie” for four seasons. He now lives with his second wife, with whom he has had one child, and enjoys free lance writing specializing in sports, travel and automotive interests and photography.

Four members of the Glen Cove HS Big Red Boy’s Lacrosse Team and one parent were honored by the Nassau County Lacrosse Coaches Association. Seniors Geoffrey Field, Sean Morrissey, Michael Hatala and Brandon Leon as well as Rob Field of Glen Cove Jr. Lacrosse were recognized for their fine work both on and off the lacrosse field. Geoffrey Field and Sean Morrissey were named to the All-Conference Team. Geoffrey, who has led GC in assists for the past three years, will be attending Montclair State in the fall. Sean, GC’s face-off specialist had a fantastic 73% win percentage, and led the midfield in scoring, will attend King’s College in the fall. Michael, and Honorable-Mention All-County player, has led GC in scoring the past three seasons scored 43 goals this season, including the 100th of his career. Michael will attend Susquehanna College in the fall. Brandon, GC’s cover defenseman was named to the All-County Team. goals scored. Brandon will be attending Molloy College in the fall. In addition to their work on the field, the boys were also given awards for the work in the classroom. Sean and Michael were named to the Academic All-Conference Team, and Brandon to the Academic All-County Team. Rob Field was awarded the Harvey Cohen Service Award, recognizing individuals who have donated service to both the Jr. League and HS lacrosse programs. The SAFE Glen Cove Coalition encourages Glen Cove residents to take a survey designed to garner public opinion regarding the reinstatement of youth and family mental health and chemical dependency services to the City. The Coalition has met several times to strategically plan to recognize unmet community needs and the resources necessary to address them. The Coalition is aware of the community's needs through its ongoing collaborative efforts. It is composed of twelve sectors of the community which are: youth, youth serving organizations, parents, business community, media, school, law enforcement, faith based organizations, civic and volunteer groups, healthcare professionals, state, county and local governmental agencies and other organizations with expertise in substance abuse. The mission of the Coalition is to eliminate alcohol and substance abuse in Glen Cove. The Coalition is overseen by SAFE's Board of Directors and

The Safe Glen Cove Coalition Encourages

You To “Take The Survey”Co-Chaired by Health Teacher Tony Gallo and SAFE Executive Director, Dr. Sharon Harris. "The community lost vital treatment services to youth and adults when the hospital closed its behavioral health sciences program. Additionally, funding sources have diminished in this depressed economy further reducing services. This, combined with a lack of community based comprehensive bi-lingual treatment services, homelessness, unemployment and a lack of shelter for displaced women and children has put a strain on an already fragile population" said Georgie Connett, SAFE Board Chair and Strategic Planner. "The purpose of the survey is to gather cross sectional data that will demonstrate to State and local Licensing bodies that prevention and treatment funding is needed in the City of Glen Cove, especially services for youth between the ages of 5-16. The rise in Heroin use, its related fatalities and no

local treatment services directly compounds the larger issue. We are thankful to have the support of the Mayor and City Council as well as the Coalition members and volunteers regarding this critical issue" said Dr. Sharon Harris, SAFE Executive Director and Coalition Co-Chair.
