VOLUME XXXII, NUMBER 3 FALL 2016 Hello, FHEA members! Believe it or not, cooler weather is on the way, although as we are in Florida, we may have to give it a few more months. Your board continues to work diligently behind the scenes. We recently held our summer board meeting at the world famous Daytona Beach! This will be the location of the FHEA 33rd Spring Meeting. We will be returning to the Hilton Daytona Beach Resort for this meeting that will take place May 11-12, 2017. As part of FHEA’s commitment to bringing important educational opportunities to its members, this spring meeting will include a CHC exam review course on Thursday and the CHC exam following the spring meeting session on Friday. Information and registration for this course will be available in early 2017. As of our Summer Board meeting, we have 290 active and life members and 556 supporting members! All of our districts reported great educational programs at their meetings and many of the programs provided CEU’s for those in attendance. Please try to attend your district meetings and give the district officers ideas for meeting topics that would bring value for you in the future. It was my honor to attend the ASHE annual conference in Denver this July and to represent all of you when I accepted the ASHE Elite Platinum Award on the main stage! Only nine chapters were successful in achieving the Elite Platinum Award in its inaugural year and FHEA was one of those receiving this prestigious award! Achieving the Elite award required completing all of the hurdles that have been required in the past for the Platinum Award, along with additional requirements for sustainability efforts in our chapter. FHEA stood out amongst our peers with several of our members and/or their organizations receiving rewards and recognition. I hope you all have made your reservations for the AHCA/FHEA Annual Conference and trade show at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort. This will be the 54th Annual meeting and Trade show and the 32nd AHCA Annual Seminar set for October 17- 19! We expect a record number of attendees and have assembled an awesome educational program. On Sunday there will be a best ball scramble at the prestigious Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course! There is still some space for golfers and sponsors, but do hurry because the event is filling quickly! The golf tournament is being limited to 144 players to ensure that we all can complete the course. Staying on the Disney property is an awesome opportunity for you to bring your family and spend some time at this ultimate family destination. As you all know, CMS has adopted the 2012 version of NFPA 101 “Life Safety Code” and that has caused a lot of changes for all of us in the healthcare industry. We have included a speaker in our annual meeting program to address this issue and give us all a better idea of what we should be prepared for! Please check out the entire annual meeting program on page 2 and the faculty on page 3. Please connect with your district officers to provide ideas on how we can serve you better and let them know what you would suggest for future educational offerings. Your FHEA board feels very honored and humbled to serve you, our members! I look forward to seeing many of you at the annual meeting!!

VOLUME XXXII, NUMBER 3 FALL 2016

Hello, FHEA members! Believe it or not, cooler weather is on the way, although as we are in Florida, we may have to give it a few more months. Your board continues to work diligently behind the scenes. We recently held our summer board meeting at the world famous Daytona Beach! This will be the location of the FHEA 33rd Spring

Meeting. We will be returning to the Hilton Daytona Beach Resort for this meeting that will take place May 11-12, 2017. As part of FHEA’s commitment to bringing important educational opportunities to

its members, this spring meeting will include a CHC exam review course on Thursday and the CHC exam following the spring meeting session on Friday.

Only nine chapters were successful in achieving the Elite Platinum Award in its inaugural year and FHEA was one of those receiving this

prestigious award!

This will be the 54th Annual meeting and Trade show and the 32nd AHCA Annual Seminar set for October 17-19! We expect a record number of attendees and have assembled an awesome educational program. On Sunday there will be a best ball scramble at

the prestigious Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course! There is still some space for golfers and sponsors, but do hurry because the event is filling quickly! The golf

tournament is being limited to 144 players to ensure that we all can complete the course.

Welcome New Supporting MembersThe following have joined our growing ranks since our last listing in the summer issue of the newsletter.

NEWCOMPANY

Thanks in part to input from healthcare facility and industry professionals in Florida that comprised a focus group looking into establishing a degree program for Energy Management, Valencia College has been awarded full grant funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for the first Energy Management and Controls Technology (EMCT) Associate in Science degree program in Florida. This program is in direct response to regional employers’ critical need for trained technicians in STEM-related fields.

Resham (Rae) Shirsat, Director of Sustainability at Valencia offered her gratitude to the focus group which included Ben Fitzgerald, CHE, who serves on the FHEA board of directors as Sus-tainability Liaison. She reported the next step is developing the curriculum for the program that will be fully launched in Fall 2018.

As the work of healthcare facility managment professionals increases in scope and complexity, the challenge is to find qualified people to fill these positions in an environment where our member-ship is aging and it becomes harder for people to work their way up through the ranks. Educational programs to prepare healthcare facility professionals is one very needed solution.

Ben commented, “the students coming out of this program will have a strong foundation of elec-trical and mechanical systems as well as computer science. The target employers will be the major BAS vendors but we in healthcare could certainly use them across the state!”

EnergyAs you may have heard FHEA was one of a very few select ASHE Chapters across the nation that achieved the coveted status of Platinum Elite, the highest Level

of Affiliation awarded by ASHE. This was only possible with FHEA’s participation in ASHE’s Energy to Care (E2C) program. We’d like to take a moment to thank the Facilities teams at Bay Care, Shriners Tampa, Martin Health, Shands UF, Jackson Hospital, Florida Hospital Fla-gler and Florida Hospital Central Divi-sion for helping us achieve Platinum Elite status. ASHE’s initial focus is on energy conservation and that is why we are seeing a push to benchmark energy data via En-ergy Star and then share that data via E2C. Over the course of the next year they are going to be introducing a friendly energy

FHEA Sustainability Updateconservation challenge between Chapter member locations. They need no less than five hospitals to participate. Whoever con-serves the most wins! If you are interested in learning more about this program, please contact me.

WasteYou may or not be aware that the Dept. of Energy has made a change to Energy Star this year. They’ve introduced “Waste & Materials” as something you can now track via their tool. There are actually 29 dif-ferent types of waste you can now track. Trying to find good peer data on trash, recycling and other diversions has been difficult to do in the healthcare setting. If you are interested in learning more simply take a look at the Energy Star support page: https://portfoliomanager.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/217414167

CollaborationThe Florida Hospital Association (FHA) has been working on a sustainability jour-ney this year as well and has reached out to FHEA along this front to collaborate.

Together we desire to see energy conser-vation and sustainability efforts increase across the state. We agree that the journey starts with benchmarking consumption via Energy Star. One key benefit to the FHA collaboration is visibility with Senior Ex-ecutives and Board Members across the state, the “C-Suite”. Many of your CEO’s, CFO’s and COO’s are FHA members. Is energy conservation and sustainability on their “radar” today? If you answered no, how can we help you change that? If you answered yes to that question, please take a moment to write to Alethea and me and tell us your story. Are you on a sustainability journey? We’d love to hear about it and highlight your success to FHEA and FHA. Have you opened a new tower or campus that was LEED certified? Tell us about it!

Each of us are stewards of the environ-ment and are the entrusted “doers” that can make a positive impact on both the bottom line and the planet. We look forward to hearing about your successes and offer our assistance with your efforts to do even [email protected] / [email protected]
