Reports from AGM’s

BC Fellowship report for MAMOOK PAPAH

The past year has been a busy one for the BC Fellowship. At the Annual General Meeting of the Scout Properties(B.C./Yukon) Society, the BC Fellowship became a votingmember.During the year we had 3 new groups of Scouters ask toform Guilds, one in Terrace, one in Chilliwack and a third inPrince Rupert. We have also been invited to participate at PJ'19 with a BCFellowship booth, to promote Guilds. Our AGM in September was again hosted by the 31st and40th Baden-Powell Guilds and held at the Eagles Hall inMaple Ridge with 9 of the 17 BC Guilds in attendance. Our revised Constitution/Bylaws, designed to bring them inline with the BC Societies Act was passed.Several items were addressed including growth of existingGuilds, formation of new Guilds and communications withGuild members. Several ideas were discused, includingkeeping in touch with Rover Crews, retiring Scouters, visitinglocal Scout Area Meetings and being active with them, getting involved with the non-Scouting community so thatthey learn who we are.One suggestion was to give each Guild a PDF copy of theNational Guild Brochure that they could personalise withcontact information to use as a recruiting tool.In regard to communications, we considered Facebook, butdecided that someone with great social media skills (whichno one would admit to having) would be needed to monitor itfull time for it to be useful. The members thought that our "BC Guild News" was a verygood way to get BC information to members.

Ontario Fellowship Report

The 73rd B.P. Guild hosted the recent AGM at Blue SpringsScout Reserve for The Ontario Fellowship of B.P. GuildsOctober 27, 2018. Although the first snow of the season anda flat tire for one of the Guilds tried to delay arrivals, themeeting began and offered a teleconference option for thoseunable to travel. The most significant decision was theunanimous vote to move from an Annual General Meeting toa Triennial General Meeting, beginning immediately.

Therefore our next meeting will be hosted by the 81st B.P.Guild of Ontario in the fall of 2021 at a location and date to bedetermined.

Each BP Guild present spoke of their various fundraisers andgroup activities they have offered to support their localScouting groups. The assembly suggested a few differentstrategies to address the number of absent BP Guilds. Thisissue is a lingering one that continues to cause grief. At theconclusion of the meeting, the new officers were invested fortheir three year term. All in all, the comraderie and great foodprepared by the 73rd BP Guild made the travel to B.S.S.R.worthwhile.

Reports from Guilds

1st Baden Powell Guild

The 1st Canadian Baden-Powell Guild held their annualChristmas luncheon in Vancouver and had a few socialgatherings. Unfortunately Lloyd Bygrave went home inFebruary. He was a long time Guild member and Scouterfor 51 years. He started Scouting with the 12th Richmondas an ACM, moved to the 5th Richmond as a Scout Leaderand was District Commissioner for Richmond Georgia andwas a Trainer 3. He was awarded the Medal of Merit in1998. On a more positive note, Alex Hadden was awardedhis 55 year certificate and pin by Scouts Canada in June.

J Alex Hadden Guildmaster

3rd Baden Powell Guild

We continue to meet at Sands Funeral Home on the thirdMonday of the month. At this time we have twelve paid upmembers with one more to come. We are still trying to getmore members, like most organizations. Our Guildmaster is Ray Lockhart, Treasurer Bob Cools andSecretary Sally Burrows. We continue to support the ScoutTroop that goes to the Jamboree at Blaire Atholl inScotland.Four of our younger members also serve on the CampWoodlands Camp Committee, a wilderness camp at LakeCowichan. We continue to support the Kub Kar races in the spring andmaintain a Memorial Bench and plaques at the "DiscoveryCentre" north of Duncan, for former BP Guild members andformer Scouters. We held our annual Christmas lunch a bit early inNovember as most of us were getting busy with other Yulefestivities and families. In July we held Pot Luck dinner at Camp Woodlands, thiswas to give the membersa chance to see the camp thatsome of us are part of. Some extensive work had beendone out there and we wanted to show it off. This year our dear friend and long time member, DougWellwood passed away, Doug had been the treasurer formany years and he certainly kept us up to date andfinancially secure. Bob Cools certainly has big shoes to fill.

Respectfully submitted by Sally Burrrows, Secretary for the3rd Baden Powel Guild, Duncan, B.C.

22nd Baden Powell Guild

Elsie Adrian who is our longest serving member in the 22ndBaden Powell Guild. She has been active in the Scoutingand Guild movement in Prince George BC from 1966 to2018 and continues to this day.

As the 22nd Baden Powell Guildcelebrates its 33rd anniversary, here is a brief history of our oldestand longest serving member ElsieAdrian.1960's Prince George BoyScouts. Boys with an interest indeveloping outdoor survival skillswanted to join the Baden-Powellmovement. These skills werepassed down to young boys by

adult leaders with knowledge and skills of the outdoors.Continued in next column

Continued from previous column

Elsie's son Ken heard of a Cub pack and wanted to join. Soin 1966 Elsie innocently went to see what it was all about.Little did she know that leader Tom Burns was eyeing herup for a uniform as a potential and much needed leader. Her offer of wanting to "just be a helper" quickly led to herinvestment as a leader in the 10th Fort George Fraser Cubpack. Her husband Hank also joined the group and asnumbers grew, a second Cub pack was formed. Elsieaccepted and became the Cub Master (Akela) of the new13th Fort George Fraser group. In 1976/78 Elsie took her Baden Powell Gilwell I & II trainingto get more efficient in the skills she would need as a Cubleader and future Scouting roles she might seek out. In1982 Elsie did her Gilwell Train the Trainer. Some of theBP Guild group remember taking the first training coursefrom Elsie and rumour has it at the Flag raising ceremonyone morning, a bra just happened to float to the groundduring the unveiling of the flag. She adamantly denies itwas hers but all of us there had a good chuckle and to thisday we give her a hard time about it. We all enjoyed havingElsie as the leader of the Wood Badge II training We took itto heart when she told us to act like the Cubs in our groupsand that's what we did…hence the bra in the flag. Elsiecontinued with the Gilwell training for another 10 years butwe don't think she had the same group of fun guys as shedid in her first course.Elsie and Hank became well known in the Scoutingorganization within Prince George and in other parts of BC.They took part in camps, hikes, Cuborees, ScoutJamborees, JOTA Lynx Lake, Trees for Canada, TrashTrek, Kub Car events and so much more. They receivedmany Scouting recognitions including Bar of Merit in 1997and lifetime membership (BC Northern Region ScoutsCanada).

The Formation of the 22nd BP Guild

In 1984, the Adrian's along with other scout leadersdiscussed forming a BP Guild in Prince George. HankAdrian, Phil Ralph, Flo Dew and Roberta Moxham sent anapplication off in October of 1984 and by February of 1985a charter was granted to form the 22nd BP Guild chapter inPrince George. Phil Ralph was elected Guild-master with amembership of seven. Since its inception the 22nd Guildcontinues to fellowship with meetings and many foodoriented socials. During Christmas our commitment tocommunity service takes us shopping to provide food andgifts for a needy family through the Salvation Army Adopt-A-Family and we also spend a day 'Ringing the Bells' for theKettle campaign.Today we recognize the Scouting movement has changed.Young people do not seem as interested in joining so manyScouting groups have folded here and elsewhere due tolack of interest. It is sad, but like Elsie we hope this trendwill turn around one day as the young people of todaydiscover what they're missing! Perhaps a 'Scouting App'can be developed! The Cubs, Leaders and Guild membersexpress their appreciation to Elsie for her 50 years ofcontinuing service here in Prince George. We feel blessedto have her still involved in our Guild and look forward tosharing many more wonderful times together.

Old Scout Photo

I am a researcher at the ScoutsCanada National Museum, here inOttawa.

The purpose of this correspondenceis to solicit your assistance, throughMamook Papah, in identifying theBoy Scout in the attached photopost card.

In 1964, the Boy Scouts of Americaissued a set of approximately 100postcards, each one depicting theimage of a Scout from a differentcountry. We have received one ofthese sets of cards at the Museum, and we would like to display theCanadian card with a descriptive

caption. I believe that the photograph of this Canadian Scout wastaken during the 1959 Jamboree in the Philippines , as many ofthe others may have been, based on similar background scenery. But what we would really like to know is the name of that CanadianScout, his home-town Scout troop, and a confirmation of when &where the picture was taken.

I know this seems like looking for needle in a haystack, but wehave been successful in identifying the Canadian boy who wasphotographed for another collection of 'Scouts-of-the-World' postcards which the BSA issued in 1968. What facilitated thatdiscovery though was that he was a member of an Ottawa troop, and I was able to learn his identity through one of the localScouters' Clubs, and a Scouter who recognized the 1968 photo asone he had seen in the Troop's scrap book. This approach hasnot worked for the 1964 picture.

I thought of the Guild Fellowship for this search because it hasbeen my experience that many Scouts who attended Jamboreesas a Youth stayed with Scouting as an adult. And just maybe he isnow a member of one of the Guilds, or someone that knows him isa Guild member.

Hoping that you can help.

Yours in Scouting…
