VOLUNTEER FUNDRAISING PACK

Page 2: Volunteer fundraising pack

THANK YOU!! Firstly, we would like to say thank you for sharing our passion for play by supporting us with your fundraising! Through our fantastic volunteers, like you, EAP is able to design and create community-centred playgrounds by investing in inspirational young Ugandan’s and their local materials, ensuring that the full benefit is felt in country, as well as enabling you to see a tangible difference of exactly where your money is spent! This fundraising pack is bursting with fun and fabulous fundraising ideas, events, tools and case studies of previous fundraisers. Whether you fancy a personal challenge, getting your school or company involved or taking on a new adventure, it is all in here, ready and waiting for you to organise an experience you will never forget! Thank you again & remember to have fun! Tom Gill and Carla Powell Founders of East African Playgrounds

DIFFERENCE YOU CAN MAKE! In the UK the government invests millions each year into play opportunities and has hundreds of playground companies and charities all working to provide children with the all-important space for them to explore, create, socialise and ultimately develop as a person. In Uganda, a country where 50% of the population is under 15 years old, there is just EAP and no government funding! As a fixed asset in the community, a playground structurally symbolises, promotes and reinforces the importance of childhood. A playground offers children the space to make sense of any problems they might be facing, through role play and imaginative games, thus learning vital problem solving skills for the future. So, thank you for joining our campaign to give children across East Africa their childhood, their freedom and ultimately a brighter future for all!

Rest: A reflective

observational space

helps children to make

sense of the world

Imaginative: Children

have the chance to act out

real life scenarios & work

through problems

Active Play:

helps children to

physically interact

& learn their

capabilities

Obstacles: Challenges & positive risks in child’s play helps to develop their coordination

Free Play: Children need

places to make their own

games, supporting them

to learn & teach Creative Play: Having

areas for children to be

free & creative develops

their fine motor skills

“WE ARE BUILT TO PLAY AND BUILT THROUGH PLAY”

– WHY PLAY IS SO IMPORTANT Many people don’t realize what a key role play takes in a child’s development and well-being. Here are a few ideas for you to use during your fundraising to help

get people excited about play and realise what a massive impact it has.

Unstructured play environments encourage children to think for

themselves, gaining vital problem solving skills, which is often missing in

East African classroom teaching due to the rote teaching format, adopted

due to lack of resources, knowledge and inspiration from teachers.

Play brings with it many benefits, including:

Alleviating stress

Enabling children to enjoy and learn together

Building resilience

Improving communication, social & emotional understanding

Increasing community morale

Being invaluable to a child’s health and well-being

“It is becoming increasingly clear through research on the brain, as well as in other areas of study, that childhood needs play. Play acts as a forward feed mechanism into courageous,

creative, rigorous thinking in adulthood.” Professor Tina Bruce

"Play permits the child to resolve in symbolic form unsolved problems of the past and to cope directly or symbolically with

present concerns. It is also his most significant tool for preparing himself for the future and its tasks."

Bruno Bettelheim, child psychologist

Each of the playgrounds that EAP builds incorporates into it elements or some

space for each of the six types of play detailed in the picture above.

Access to different types of play can have a massive impact on children. For

example: if a child has experienced trauma, the access to imaginative play will

help them work through issues that they may have; if they struggle to problem

solve due to the rote learning system used in schools, then creative play is vital to

help them develop this skill.

You can raise CASH FOR CHALLENGES; get your friends to challenge you to be silent, give up chocolate or dye your hair the more you raise the longer or wackier your challenge can become!

Everyone loves DRESSING UP, how about getting your office or school to come to work dressed as their favourite toy or in their pyjamas! You could even hold a fashion show, or competition of the best/wackiest dress!

Or do you just have a whole heap of clutter; why not SELL it for EAP on e-

bay or at a car boot sale, get everyone involved to empty their wardrobe for you! You could even sell your services to others such as dog walking, car washing, baby sitting and many more!

If you’re a bit of a FOODIE you could; host a dinner party, hold a bake

sale, pancake party or provide your neighbours with a take away service for those indulgent Friday nights in!

If SPORTS are more your kind of thing you can hold a sport-a-thons,

challenges like keep ups, a tournament to pit a group of teams against one another or even take part in a marathon or climb a mountain!!

Would you prefer a bit of an ADVENTURE? We can help you organise

an unforgettable sky dive, swim with sharks, road trip across Europe and many more!

Are you the TALENTED type, even if you’re not, you can organise tremendous talent shows, big band nights or even a simple pub quiz night.

FUNDRAISING INSPIRATION There are endless ways to fundraise, the key is to think about your skills and hobbies to tailor make the perfect fundraiser for you!

Most importantly remember that you are fundraising for children to be able to play in East Africa ... so make sure you have as much fun fundraising as they will playing on their new playground!

Page 5: Volunteer fundraising pack

Family & Friends Contact all of your family, friends and family friends and let them know what you are doing and how they can help you. Make sure to get them all signed up to Give As You Live and let them know your Justgiving page URL. Also, invite them along to any fundraisers that you hold and get them involved with them. For example, you could get them all to come to a charity dinner you are holding or rope them in to come and help you do a bag pack or bucket shake so you can have some fun fundraising!

Business Fundraising Many businesses hold charity events or offer grants to

those who are fundraising. Contact as many as

possible and see what they can do for you. It may be

something as simple as a fancy dress day or a football

sweepstake, but they may also be interested in

holding a corporate event to help benefit your

organization or offer you a grant.

School fundraising We believe in the power, motivation and imagination

that young people have and their ability to change

the world around them. Think about working with

schools to help them with fundraisers from simple

dress down days and bake sales to a play day for the

whole school. In return the school may ask you to

hold an assembly or a workshop for their children,

both of which we have resources to help you with.

Local Community Contact your local community and social groups to talk

to more people about your fundraising. The more

people you speak to the more people will be willing to

help you with either fundraisers that you are holding or

by running their own. Church groups, Lions clubs,

Women’s Institute, Rotary clubs, Scouts and local

sports clubs are all good places to start. Get a group

together and talk to them about what you are trying to

achieve. We offer several PowerPoint’s that you can use

to help with this, targeting a wide range of needs and

ages.

THEY DID IT & SO CAN YOU!!!

Marc Wileman and his chums climbed Snowdon one Easter weekend and raised £120 for East African playgrounds which contributed to a new seesaw!

Leeds Metropolitan student volunteers challenged themselves to abseil down a University building and as a group they raised a whooping £7,000 which built the Mupemudee Playground in Jinja! They loved their abseiling challenge so much that when they got to Uganda they decided to abseil down a waterfall there! Holly Klimek held a Pie night in her local pub,

preparing all the pies at home ready to be served from the pub kitchen and asking people to donate what they thought her meal was worth, she raised a whooping £1,000, they must have been good pies!

Julie Dumont challenged herself to do a handstand everyday of the year raising a huge £1,078, which means a whole new adventure complex! Our Ugandan Playground building team were so impressed they even started doing handstands too!

The Priory School, Dorking held an ‘Apprentice’ style lunch time with the sixth formers having their own stalls for their new ‘business’ to sell to other students. They raise £600 which went towards buying our new truck in Uganda!

Declan D’Arcy did a bungee in a bikini getting dunked in the river Nile raising over £300!
