Message from Pete Nordland President of Canada 55+ Games Association

Dear Volunteers,

On behalf of all of the participants coming to the 2014 Canada 55+ Games in Strathcona County, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts for your involvement in making these Games a reality.

The number of participants that are coming to these Games will be, by far, the largest on record since we started in 1996 and from the information that we have received from the

organizers, they will be Games that our participants will remember for years to come and no doubt will be central in many stories that they will relate to their children and grandchildren.

None of this would be possible without the time and dedication that you have offered to the Host Committee and to your Community. Hopefully the smiles and thanks of our participants will more than compensate you for your service.

I look forward to meeting all of you during the Games. With many thanks.

Pete Nordland President, Canada 55+ Games Association

Mille merci.

The 2014 Canada 55+ Games Logo What does our LOGO mean? The colours of the logo have a distinctive meaning. The RED represents Canada and the Canada 55+ Games Association, the BLUE represents Alberta and the Alberta 55+ and the GREEN represents Strathcona County, the Canada 55+ Games Community Engagement Society and volunteers.

The three flags also represent the three Hubs at the Canada 55+ Games in Strathcona County, including Millennium, Central and Ardrossan.

The BLUE represents the Millennium Hub, which includes two world class amenities: Millennium Place and Centennial Park. The blue is also symbolic of Millennium Place which is home to our largest aquatic centre.

The RED represents the Central Hub of the Games; Broadmoor Lake Park is in the heart of our community and is the host site to all of our major community festivals and celebrations. This area is a key community gathering place with year round outdoor and indoor recreational opportunities.

The GREEN represents the Ardrossan Hub which is a rural hub. This hub features an incredible newly revitalized recreation facility along with open spaces, trails and the 55 Plus Club.

The building located in the middle of our logo represents Festival Place. Located in the Central Hub, it is a gathering place for cultural events in our community. Festival Place overlooks Broadmoor Lake Park and will be part of the cultural experience during the Games.

The swoosh connecting the three organizations involved with the Canada 55+ Games, symbolizes that the hubs are in close proximity to each other and ties our community into the Canada 55+ Games.

Overall, the logo depicts a social, multi sport/activity and festive event!

Background and History Provided by the Canada 55+ Games Association

What are the “Canada 55+ Games”?The Canada 55+ Games is a nation-wide program to sponsor wellness - that is, the spiritual, mental and physical well being - among Canadians 55 years of age and older. Provincial programs are staged annually in different provinces and territories. The first national Games were held in Regina in 1998. The Games should not be categorized as sporting events, as they span a wide range of physical and mental challenges - from slo-pitch to contract bridge and darts to bocce ball. These events bring together amateur competitors who participate for the sheer joy of competition, for the opportunity to visit other parts of Canada and for the camaraderie and social interaction that are an integral and essential part of the Games.

The Games bring together relatively small groups, representing their respective provinces or territories. These groups earn the right as a result of competition against thousands of other seniors in their home province or territory. The 2000 competitors represent over 15,000 Canadian seniors who actively participate in local events leading up to the national games.

VisionCanada 55+ Games Vision is to create a recurring, popular and truly national multi-activity event engaging older Canadians from coast to coast to coast. The Canada 55+ Games enrich the lives of participants and host communities and are widely recognized for their unique “fun-focused” competition model and for their significant influence on participation in an active and enjoyable lifestyle by all older adults in Canada.

MissionThe Canada 55+ Games Association delivers the bi-annual multi-event Canada 55+ Games as a unique blend of active and passive activities and works continuously to influence personal behaviour and social supports that encourage healthy, active living for older adults in Canada.

Fair Play: We believe in fair play characterized by equity, integrity, trust and respect.

Proper Planning: We believe in the concept of proper planning to ensure maximum efficiency and effectiveness of the Association, its programs and resources.

TransportationAll registered participants, non-participants and volunteers have access to the free Games Shuttle with their accreditation badge. The Games shuttles will operate on three separate loops and will take accredited participants and non-participants from their official Games hotel to all of the sport, activity and cultural venues. More information and maps will be provided in the participant handbook and at each Volunteer and Information Centre and online at www.canada55plusgames2014.com.

From August 27 to 30, participants, non-participants and volunteers can also use their accreditation badges to access local Strathcona County Transit routes for free. Commute to Edmonton will be a paid fare. All Strathcona County Transit schedules are available online at www.strathcona.ca/transit.

Environmental impact Sorting waste is as easy as 1-2-3 in Strathcona County!

Strathcona County is a leader in environmental programs and we are proud to call the Canada 55+ Games a green event.

Nearly six years ago the Green Routine was introduced to Strathcona County residents. The Green Routine is the residential waste collection program that asks residents to sort waste into three streams; organics, recycling and waste. Since the programs inception in 2008 the community has achieved a 59% waste diversion rate.

County facilities also participate in the Green Routine and have 4-stream bins located throughout the buildings.

What can you do?•Bring a reusable water bottle.

•Pack food and snacks in reusable containers.

•Dispose of your waste in the proper stream.

What is the County doing?Requiring vendors and events to use compostable plates and cutlery where possible. Compostable products go in the green bin.

Providing recycling and organics disposal options at County facilities and sports venues.

Giving reusable water bottles to all volunteers and participants.

What are organics?Organic (or compostable) material is anything that was once living. This includes food scraps, compostable cutlery, wooden stir stixs, napkins, and soiled paper.

While you are visiting Strathcona County for the Games will you take part in the Green Routine and sort your waste into the appropriate streams?
