Last month I started volunteering at Woerner to read for Ms. Sue’s class of 4th Grade boys on Tuesday afternoons. When you volunteer to be a reading buddy, you don’t have to read to an entire class—normally they will assign you to just one student. But since I’ve had some experience in reading aloud to larger groups, I asked if I could read to the whole class for 30 minutes each week. This appointment has become a highlight of my week.

I Need a Hero Last year Rich (one of our church’s elders) and I went to visit Woerner Elementary, the pre-K through 5th grade school a few hundred feet north of our church building. We were met by Peggy Meyer, the principal. You can tell right away that Mrs. Meyer loves her job. She greeted us with a beaming smile and told us all about her school. Whenever we passed students on our tour, she would greet them by name. More often than not, the student would dart across the hall to give her a hug or high-five.

Six months ago Epiphany formally adopted Woerner Elementary through the faith partner program managed by St. Louis Public School District. The terms of the “adoption” are open-ended. The District leaves it to the school and the church to work out the details. So far it has meant welcoming Mrs. Meyer to speak to us at the end of one of our services, followed by a presentation during our Bible study hour. We learned that Woerner is a diverse, multi-ethnic, neighborhood school. All of her 400+ students and families live within about 2 miles of our church building.

Since meeting Mrs. Meyer, our congregation has donated about $200 to provide school uniforms for under-privileged students and to support her perfect attendance incentive program. Along with donating money and material goods, Mrs. Meyer encouraged us to volunteer as reading buddies. For those with smarts in a particular subject, she recommended becoming a tutor. She said this is a much-appreciated service because her students always need more positive adult role models.

A few of the boys mentioned professional wrestlers. One said his dad was his hero. Another said, “Aldin.” Curious, I said, “Who is Aldin?” He pointed to the boy sitting next to him. Then I got to Gabriel. “Who is your hero?” I asked. “Jesus,” he said. I replied, “He’s mine too.” If you’d like to volunteer as a reading buddy or tutor at Woerner, email or call the church office and we can help you out with the next steps.

In Jesus, Pastor Z

[Ms. Sue] teaches 17 boys. I’ve started learning their names and they know me as “Pastor Z.” My son Titus has been coming along, so they know his name too. When I first met the class, I asked them to tell me their name and say who their hero was. Many of the boys said they did not have a hero.

A Word with our Seminary Fieldworkers

Eric, what was your “vicarage” (internship) year like? My previous vicarage year was spent in Buffalo, NY, and it was overall a wonderful experience for my entire family. Besides a lot of snow, my family also received a lot of love, encouragement, and support from the people of St. John’s …

What did you learn last year? I was given great direction and guidance from the ministerial staff that helped to bolster my confidence and love for God’s people and His Church … God’s Kingdom is employed through the relationships of people … Who we are, and how we choose to interact with our community, is God’s means to expand His Kingdom.

What did you do as vicar? I got to experience many healthy relationships inside and outside of the church through teaching, preaching, and other discipleship opportunities. Not only do we glorify God’s Kingdom by building each other up, but we also become friends who support each other in the lives God has given to us … I learned the importance of taking time to develop and build up those relationships, and to let God use them according to His purposes.

What do you look forward to when you become a pastor? I hope to land in with my family … a church of God’s disciples who work hard, play hard, and are a part of each other’s lives. Lives that are built up to glorify God’s Kingdom through challenging each other to continue learning, loving, and living God’s Great Command … to make and baptize disciples.

What are you looking forward to this year at Epiphany? Church should be fun, challenging, and genuine. I hope to experience that with you all this year, through worshiping together, learning together, and building up our relationships. I hope to experience this personally with you all on Sunday, as well as opportunities during the other 6 ½ days of the week. Pastor Mike and I have been throwing around the idea of starting a Men’s Group. If, and when, that comes to fruition I hope to meet and grow with you there as well. I look forward to growing together with you all, and my family and I are thankful to be a part of your story within God’s greater story.

Paul, in adapting to life as a seminary student, what has been a struggle for your family? Our hardest struggle has been adjusting to our new schedule. For the last five years we have had the same routines and schedules. Now Jamie is working, we have two kids in school full-time, and we continue to search for a place for our three year old to play while we are working each morning. Some of the changes have come easy and some are hard to except and we are still trying to discern the best way to move in some of these areas.

What has your family enjoyed most about seminary life so far? We enjoy the neighborhood very much. Lots of families, lots of kids. For the first time kids are knocking on the door to see if our girls can come out an play. It’s pretty great!! And it is very evident how the Lord is providing for us in this setting. It is very humbling and inspiring. We are very thankful to be here.

As a fieldworker, what do you want to learn? I have not had any experience with organizing and leading a worship service for a congregation and so I am most excited (and nervous) to learn about leading our Sunday morning worship. What is an alb and why do we wear it? Why does the pastor face us then face the altar? How do all the pieces fit together to make the worship experience happen and what does all this communicate? Lots to learn in that area.
