The Volunteering Leadership team is made up of the Volunteering Committee, Project Leaders for each volunteering project as well as MAD Day Leaders. Collectively the team exists to help plan, organise and run the events of SUBU Volunteering. All volunteering Leaders work in their own areas to promote the value and success of volunteering among the student body. As a collective, the leadership team works together to create and run volunteering events and to establish on-going volunteering projects.

Did you know: Last year SUBU Volunteering and the Volunteer Committee helped:

- Over 717 students volunteered

- They gave over 3,800 hours of their time

- 25 MAD (Make a Difference) Days

- 6 Student Led Projects

- Between them they completed over 1,100 volunteering opportunities

- 21 5 Minute Volunteering activities

- Provide an opportunity for all students on both campuses to get involved in

- volunteering and to remove barriers that might inhibit that involvement.

- To provide opportunities for students to realise their potential through volunteering.

- To create friendships amongst volunteers generally and the volunteer leadership group in particular

- To be ethical and environmental in all our activities including who we support, how

- we structure our activities and where we source our materials.

- To act as a major collective force for good in the local and wider community by

- partnering with charities & organisations to make a positive impact.

Each Leadership role brings its own set of spe-cific responsibilities, however in general as a volunteer leadership team member you will be expected to:

- Promote volunteering throughout both cam-puses

- Increase active participation in student vol-unteering

5 Minute Volunteering Leader – Lansdowne & Talbot CampusesYou will co-ordinate and plan all the activities for our 5 Minute Volunteering Programme in the appropriate locations around either campus. You will research and come up with ideas for new activities and ensure that all activities are prop-erly planned, risk assessed and supervised. You will liaise with organisations to find a suitable activity to promote/benefit them and co-ordinate dates for these bookings.

MAD Day LeaderThe overall purpose of the role is to ensure that volunteers enjoy the MAD Day, know what they are doing during the activity and complete the tasks required.

You will meet the volunteers (either on campus or at a specified location) and ensure that vol-unteers arrive at (and home from!) volunteering activities. You will liaise with the charity/organ-isation to ensure that an adequate briefing is given including a risk assessment and health & safety information where required. You will also oversee the completion of the task to the satis-faction of the charity/organisation (as long as this is reasonable, practical and safe). During the day you will talk to volunteers to make sure that they are motivated, enjoying the activity, working safely, taking adequate breaks and provide alter-nate tasks if necessary. You will make sure that volunteers have completed any necessary forms and will take photos/video footage of the activity.

Bournemouth Beach Champions Project Leader (2 positions available)The Bournemouth Beach & Sea Champions pro-ject in conjunction with the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) and the Litter Free Coast and Sea Campaign is dedicated to protecting our local shore, sea and wildlife. The Project Leaders will coordinate practical activities to keep the beach clean and help to prevent the litter getting to the beach in the first place through the promotion of national MCS campaigns and the creation and roll out of their own litter campaigns.

Alzheimer’s Society Project Leader (2 positions available)The Alzheimer’s Society Project is a joint enter-prise with the Alzheimer’s Society and SUBU. The project involves attendance at the fortnightly ‘Memory Café’ and/or ‘Singing for the Brain’ ses-sions on Friday afternoons at Westbourne Baptist Church. Through the project we help those with dementia and their carers to spend an afternoon enjoying mind stimulating games or singing and music The Project Leader co-ordinates attend-ance at these sessions and ensures that all vol-unteers are engaged appropriately.

Mural Painting Project Leader (2 positions available)The mural project brings together groups of volunteers to plan, design & paint murals with local organisations and charities at sites such as schools, care homes & community centres. As project leader you will source new sites and opportunities for our students to paint. You will design the mural (or outsource this to other stu-dents) and engage volunteers on the project to complete the mural.

Slades Farm Project Leader (2 positions available)Slades Farm Community Garden is a communi-ty project initiated by Transition Bournemouth to help create a sustainable wildlife friendly community garden and carry out conservation activities just across the road from the Talbot Campus at Slades Farm. We are working togeth-er to establish an urban farm. The conservation activities are varied and can include planting trees and shrubs suitable for foraging, clearing scrub, digging ponds, putting in hedges, planting, pruning, weeding and harvesting and other sea-sonal work. As Project Leader you will liaise with Transition Bournemouth to agree tasks, meeting dates/times and locations and advertise this to the student body. You will co-ordinate student groups and ensure that volunteers are motivated and enthusiastic

SUBU Conservation Rangers (2 positions available)The SUBU Conservation Rangers Project is an in-itiative run jointly with the Rangers from Bourne-mouth Council. The project aims to maintain heathland areas around Bournemouth. Current work involves habitat management, coppicing, clearing scrub and non-native species, fencing & hedge laying, litter picking and clearing debris from Kinson & Turbary Commons. As well as this there will be ad hoc tasks to complete according to the priorities of the Rangers.

SUBU Digital Champions (2 positions available)Working with Skills & Learning Bournemouth, Dorset & Poole the purpose of this project is to help those who don’t know how to access the internet to get online and learn skills in order to enable them to do so. The Project Leaders will co-ordinate with Skills & Learning and local li-braries to set dates for the project and will ad-vertise those on the SUBU Volunteering website. A small team of Digital Champions will go out to local libraries or other sites at least once per fortnight during term time. As Project Leader you will liaise with the council to agree tasks, meeting dates/times and locations and advertise this to the student body. You will co-ordinate student groups and ensure that volunteers are motivated and enthusiastic.

SUBU Volunteering Committee

Secretary & Administrative OfficerThe main role of the secretary & Administrative officer is to ensure the efficiency of the Volun-teering committee and that they remain organ-ised and on task. You will organise meetings, take minutes and track action points. You’ll keep an event diary and be an integral part of organising the Volunteer Fair as well as other Volunteering Events throughout the year. You’ll also help with risk assessments and logistics.

Communications OfficerThe Communications Officer will use all forms of media to promote SUBU Volunteering to the student body. You will create press and publicity material to gain coverage from local and region-al media. You’ll also attend volunteering events throughout the year.

Media OfficerThe Media Officer will record film footage and take photos at volunteer activities and events throughout the year. You will also create promo-tional films of volunteer activities as well as me-dia content for the Communications Officer to push out via social / traditional media.

Projects PR OfficerThe Projects PR Officer will liaise with the Project Leaders for the existing Student Led Volunteering Projects and with academic schools to establish areas of co-operation. You will work closely with the Media Officer and Communications Officer to ensure maximum publicity for all that we do.

Lansdowne Officer The Lansdowne Officer will focus on bringing more volunteering to Lansdowne. You’ll work with the Lansdowne staff on the best way to engage students and on what volunteering activities they would like to see us provide. Along with the 5 Minute Volunteering Officer for Lansdowne you’ll come up with new ideas and help to provide lead-ership to those.
