Brian Ray, Ph.D., and Betsy RayDr. Ray and his wife, Betsy, have been joyfully married for 27 years. They have been blessed with 8 children, now ages7 to 27. Two are now married. As they watch their olderchildren, they can truly say, due to God’s grace, “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth” (3 John 1:4). They have been home educating their childrensince the oldest was born.

Dr. Ray is the president of the National Home EducationResearch Institute (NHERI) and founding editor of the quarterly academic journal Home School Researcher(est. 1985). He has taught a wide range of subjects, mainlyscience education and research from elementary schoolthrough college levels in both public and private schools.Brian earned his Ph.D. in science education from OregonState University. He has been published numerous times injournals and books, is frequently interviewed by the mediain the US and internationally, has appeared twice on the

NBC Today Show, serves as an expert witness in courts and legislatures, and regularly makes presentationsat professional meetings. He’s also an elder in his local church.

Betsy home educates their children, is a key support to Brian’s work, has served extensively as a leader inhomeschool organizations, helps manage a six-acre farm, and grows and preserves large amounts of food.Betsy is active in her local church and exercises her gifts in the areas of hospitality, teaching, and counsel to women. Betsy earned her B.S. from Oregon State University with one year of study at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

Increasingly, Brian and Betsy are speaking and teaching together on marriage and discipling children. They look forward to being with you.

FRIDAY EVENINGSwimming Upstream: The Water Gets Clearer

Many parents fall prey to their own insecurities and critics’ darts when their children reach age 14 (and sometimes much earlier.)They consider abandoning home-based and parent-guided education. The cacophonous voices of professionals, generations of insti-tutional schooling, “ public” school giveaways and enticements, personal misperceptions of reality, and the world’s opinion aboutwhat’s important muddy the waters. Getting closer to the source — the headwaters — brings refreshment and clarity to visionand action. Dr. Ray focuses on key educational goals and philosophy (biblical), research findings, the importance of separating thestate from education, and personal experience to inform, encourage, and rally parents’ spirits and harden their resolve to continuehomeschooling for the long term in order to reap the harvest of its excellent fruits.

SATURDAY AFTERNOONLoving And Leading

Fathers and husbands, it’s time to love and lead - now - like Christ loves the church. Mothers and wives, it’s time to love your husband as God has declared. Nurture and admonish your children, but do not provoke them. Is all of this possible? Yes. Brian and Betsy will give pointed challenges, down-to-earth examples, laughter, and practical ideas to see your marriage grow from glory to glory in God’s good andexciting will. They will help and encourage you with scripture, their experiences, and what they havelearned during 27 years of marriage and the upbringing of eight children.

Speakers

Carl KerbyCarl, one of the founding board members andmost dynamic speakers of Answers in Genesis, became a Christian in 1987 after attending a crusade in Salt Lake City, Utah. Because Carlhad grown up in a very liberal church and in a family that was involved in the wild world ofprofessional wrestling (Carl’s father was knownas Luke Brown the “Kentuckian,” and profes-sionally wrestled from 1958-1974), he did nottake the Bible and its teachings seriously. In fact, even as a new Christian, Carl’s very first Sundayschool teacher taught him that evolution and theBible could mix!

As an air traffic controller in the military in the late 1980s and a “baby Christian,” Carlhappened to take a flight to Portland, Oregon, to visit his father. He rode in the cockpit of acivilian airline, and during a conversation withthe pilots, the creation/evolution issue came up.

Carl indicated that you could take evolution and add it to the Bible and there wouldn’t be aproblem. Well, the co-pilot sat up straight and looked over at the pilot and then back at Carland said, “I’m sorry, Carl, but that’s incorrect!”

Now, the pilot wasn’t trying to shove his opinion down Carl’s throat. He simply showed himfrom the Bible that evolution was a completely different worldview and could not be found inScripture. He introduced Carl to Ken Ham’s book, The Lie: Evolution. After reading it, Carl’sfaith was totally changed. He now knew that God’s Word was true from the beginning.

A former air traffic controller at Chicago’s busy O’Hare International Airport, Carl’s thrillingtestimony has been shared in churches throughout America and across the world.

SATURDAY MORNINGGenesis: The ‘Bottom Strip’ Of The Christian Faith

Using his job as an Air Traffic Controller at O’Hare International Airport, Carl demonstrates how to be effective in reaching people today with the Gospel. To do this, though, we must start with the proper foundation. Christiansneed a Biblical Worldview in order to have answers for a culture that no longer trusts God or His Word! WhenChristians allow the Bible to be the absolute authority for all areas of their lives, they will be able to give answers to the questions they are confronted with on a regular basis.

(Dr. Brian Ray - A, GS)Dr. Ray’s major, new study examines the lives of 7,306 adultsfrom across the United States who were homeschooled. Thisresearch, a long time in the making, focuses on these adults’general demographics, attitudes toward their own home-educa-tion experience, and success in life. Success was evaluated withrespect to civic, social, educational, employment, and world-view traits. In many ways, they are very “normal.” On the other hand, they are remarkably different than the general U.S.population. Generally speaking, the findings defuse many of the long-held negative criticisms of those who doubted home-schooling’s benefits, whether practiced in the U.S. or in othernations. The findings will be a great encouragement to thoseparents and advocates of home-based education over the pasttwo decades.

Questions such as: “What do fossils reallyshow us?”, “Doesn’t it take millions of years for fossils to form?”,“What about ‘Lucy’?”, plus many more will be answered.

34. When A Free Lunch Isn’t Free (Dr. Brian Ray - A)Lures abound to sidetrack homeschooling parents. One is thefast-growing nationwide promise of ‘free,’ state-run, ‘home’school programs to ‘help’ you educate your children. Dr. Raywill challenge you to consider the paramount importance ofwho should be in authority over what is taught to the mindsand hearts of our children. Related to tax-funded programs, there are (1) subtle and negative practical consequences ofenrolling your children in them, (2) serious problems from the perspective of a liberty-loving republic such as the UnitedStates, and (3) contradictions to a biblical worldview thatdemands parents and private associations be the main educators of children. Dr. Ray is convinced this is one of themost urgent issues with which homeschoolers should grapple during the next several years.

In play and instruction, welearn only a portion of what we try to learn. How can we deter-mine what to discard, what to keep, and how to help a student—especially a student with learning challenges—fully engage inlearning? Come learn about the three different kinds of learning(distinct from “learning styles”), when each type of learning worksbest, and how paying attention to each type can help you chooseand adapt curriculum so each person’s abilities are maximized andeveryone can be included.

40. Your College Degree: Faster, For Less & For Sure!(Woody Robertson - A, Y)For many homeschooling families, answering the question ofwhether or not to attend traditional college is a difficult task.Oftentimes, the cost, time required, or negative college environ-ment are too great an obstacle.
