Cartoon Analysis

The cartoon deals with the fear of Britons of immigrants. It shows the office of a principal as it can be read on the open door so that a pupil going along the corridor can be seen in the background. In the foreground there's a female headmaster on the left sitting behind a desk covered by some books, pens and a form in front of her. Next to the desk there is a girl with a headscarf which illustrates that she is a muslim looking like as if she is listening to the woman speaking to her. There is also a caption which stands for the spoken words of the headmaster saying: "Well, it's good news, the Governors have decided you are not a threat to civilization and the British Way of Life after all."The message of the cartoon is clear. It refers to recent polls revealing that xenophobia in Britain is quite high. Due to the close relation between hostility and anxiety it is a criticism on the fact that many people in Britain are afraid of foreigners. That is expressed in a very satirical way as the principal's consideration of a girl belonging to another ethnic group as a possible threat to the civilization is extremely exaggerated. From a larger perspective it's not only a criticism on British society, but also on the whole world's one which for the most part is scared of things or people and for example there cultures that are not familiar to them.
