A unique ‘Twist’Eucalyptus trees around Scone and the Sydney Harbour foreshore are the inspiration behind the latest exhibition at Murrurundi’s Michael Reid Gallery. Julia Roberts’ TWIST exhibit aims to twist the way in which viewers see trees, from static inane things to living, breathing forms that are as alive as we are.

The show is previewing in Sydney before it comes to the Upper Hunter for September and October.

A free event with Peter GillRenowned Muswellbrook artist and former Director and Curator of the Arts Centre, Peter Gill will run a free-artist demonstration event in Muswellbrook on Sunday August 28. Mr Gill will demonstrate the drawing and painting techniques involved in creating works in the medium of charcoal and wash on canvas. The event begins at 10.30am at Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre.

How many children/grandchildren do you have? 2 daughters: Lily 6 years old and Ivy is 15 months.

What’s it mean to you to be a father? It means that your actions and responsibilities are based on the benefit of your kids and not yourself, and that everything you do is to help your kids achieve all that they can.

How has parenthood surprised you? By learning that you would do anything for your children; something you can’t understand beforehand.

What advice would you give to new fathers? Spend as much time with your kids as possible, and be their parent, not their friend.

How do you celebrate Father’s Day? Usually just a family breakfast, I don’t like too much fuss.

Winter heating rebates soon to wind upAs winter comes to an end, so too are the Cleaner Heating rebates currently on offer from Singleton Council and Muswellbrook Shire Council. Rebates of $1,500 are being offered for the replacement of old wood-fired heaters with cleaner sources of heating. Residents interested in replacing their wood heaters are being urged to contact either Council as soon as possible to learn more about the offer before it concludes on 31 October 2016.

Create and grow at MerriwaCotton wool balls and eye balls made for some interesting craft fun during Merriwa Create and Grow Playgroup last term in Merriwa.Children created paper bag puppets and magical mittens as part of the two-hour playgroup held in Merriwa every second week.

While indoor crafts are a very popular part of playgroup, there is also plenty of outdoor action, music and story time. Playgroup is on every second Wednesday in Term 3 from 3 August for children aged 0-6. Playgroup is an initiative of the Merriwa Family Support Network and supported by Upper Hunter Shire Council.

Say NO to domestic violence! On Saturday 3 September the Got Your Back Sista charity is hoping to attract 1000 people to Hunter Stadium in a united front to say that violence in our community is not acceptable. It’s hoped the 1000-People, 1-Voice event will unite all sectors of the community to say we will not tolerate domestic violence. The event will also serve to raise funds for women who are establishing their lives after fleeing domestic violence.

Got Your Back Sista was established as a registered charity earlier this year by The Sista Code working in collaboration with local refuges to provide women with vouchers and store credits to purchase essential items as part of the establishment of a new and safe home for themselves and their children.

Items have included beds, refrigerators, household consumable items and kitchen appliances. The organisation has to date provided about $40,000 in support to local women.

Mayor for a Day experienceThe Upper Hunter Shire Council 2016 ‘Mayor for a Day’ winner, Charlotte Wells of Aberdeen Public School, was announced at the Council’s ordinary meeting on August 22. Patrick Magner of St Joseph’s Primary School in Merriwa was chosen as ‘Deputy Mayor’.Two hundred and eighty primary school children from across the Upper Hunter Shire submitted ideas of what they would do as ‘Mayor for a Day’. Proposals included helping the homeless, fixing roads, cleaning up rubbish, and more playgrounds were popular.

Charlotte’s winning entry promised new play equipment, footy fields, bike tracks and skate parks, a basketball contest, weekend markets, clean-up days and more school shops. She also proposed a “National PJ Day” when it rains and you stay home and watch movies, and “a telescope area to see the stars on special occasions”.

All participants in Mayor for a Day received a certificate of appreciation.

Two musical trajectories born of enthralling live performances and evocative storytelling converged in July and August for a run of shows nationally.William Crighton and Claire Anne Taylor have carved their name into the Australian music scene this year with universally-acclaimed debut albums and strong praise from live music reviews, each shaped by their formative years spent in rural serenity.

Crighton’s journey started in the Riverina and has taken him around the world, with extensive time spent in Nashville.
