Locktician Speaks:The more you put in your hair, the

more you have to take out.

Locks are like sponges, extra absorbent. If you know thefeeling of holding a dry sponge beneath a running faucet, then youcan remember how long it took to saturate it. The thinner thesponge, the easier it was to saturate. Locks are extremely similar.

The healthier the lock, the more it can hold. It is the samewith products. Once you saturate the Locks with waxy or creamyproducts, those products stay there until you shampoo them outwith hot soapy water. Why? Might you ask…Locks are denseand fibrous in a sense that you have thousands of little tendrilsfighting for their own space. Because they are not smooth andgoing in the same direction, the products sit on the hair.

If you continue to use creamy leave-in conditioner, it buildsup. Even when you shampoo and follow up with a cream condi-tioner, the cream leaves a buildup and attracts dirt, dust, and de-bris.

To earn healthy Locks you Must NOT use:1) metal clips2) Beeswax3) Cream based conditionersDo:1) Nurture your roots2) Cover your Locs with silk or satin3) Love and nurture oil and hands often

There you have it, our tips for the month, Hope that helps!

To all my Naturalistas you can’t stay strongforever…someday you will have to Lock.

GROWING UP Vs GROWING OLDHave we stopped to think about the difference in

growing up and growing old? Each day we live, we growolder, but are we necessarily growing up? Longevitydoes not guarantee maturity. Maturity comes from within, from taking advantage of the Wisdom and Knowledgeof our everyday experiences. Robert Kiyosaki states inhis book, Rich Dad Poor Dad, “We win some and welearn from some”. Before reading this book, I wouldhave said, you may win some and you’ll lose some. But,as we learn from our mistakes, we haven’t lost.

There is a big difference in growing up and grow-ing old. Girls and Boys are considered adults or grownat the age 18 and 21 respectively, from a chronologicalstandpoint. But mentally speaking, have they grown upor did they just grow older? An 18 year old can stay inbed for one year and not do one productive thing and atthe end of that year, that person will be 19 years old.An 80 year old person can stay in bed for one year andnot do one productive thing and in one year that personwill be 81 years old. Growing old doesn’t require nei-ther talent nor ability, just merely existing will allow oneto grow old.

We grow up by finding the opportunity in change. Two of the secrets to staying young are: (1) you musthave a dream and work with everything within you tomake that dream a reality. (2) Have some fun daily; findsome humor in everything you do, each day. Withoutdreams we are mentally dead. “We do not stop playingbecause we are old; we grow old because we stop play-ing.”

We grow up when we live our dreams’ to their ful-fillment. The successful elderly usually don’t have re-grets about things they did, but they have regret aboutthe things they did not do. An 80 year old woman, bythe name of Ruby had a lifelong dream of finishing acollege education. So, at the age of 87, she decided toreturn to college. When asked by most every studenton campus, why she waited so long to go to college, her reply was “I’ve always dreamed of having a college

education and now I’m getting one.”She became the icon of the campusand was loved by all. At the year’s end, Ruby finished and received herDegree. One week after graduation Ruby passed away peacefully in hersleep.

Ruby taught by example that it’s never too late to be all you can be.We can grow old, but, do we have the talent and ability, like Ruby, to growup? GROWING OLDER IS MANDATORY. GROWING UP IS OP-TIONAL!

Ferguson Returns as Sports Information Director

Fayetteville, NC – Fayetteville State University has hiredAdrian Ferguson as the Broncos sports information director.

Ferguson returns to the athletics department after servingas the associate commissioner for media relations at the CentralIntercollegiate Athletic Association. Before his stint with the CIAA,he was the Broncos SID from 2008 to 2014.

“It’s an honor to have this opportunity to return to the Bron-cos’ campus and join a staff that is on the cusp of making a hugeimpact in the Fayetteville community, conference, and DivisionII,” said Ferguson.

During his period with the Broncos, Ferguson was hon-ored the 2014 Fayetteville State University Second Runner-upStaff Member of the Year and the CIAA’s 2009-10 John HolleySports Information Director of the Year, his second time receiv-ing the honor.

He was instrumental in maximizing the usage of Luther ‘Nick’Jeralds’ video board and enhancing the Broncos game-day ex-perience. FSU’s presence online with live statistics and the videostreaming of games, interviews, and highlights was a draw to theUniversity.

With 20 years of experience within sports information,Ferguson has worked within the CIAA at Winston-Salem Stateand has also had two stints at his alma mater Livingstone. TheBlue Bears inducted Adrian Ferguson into its 2010 Athletics Hallof Fame as a student-athlete, coach, and administrator.

Fayetteville State University to ReviveWomen’s Track & Field for 2017-2018

Fayetteville, N.C. - Fayetteville State University will revive its women’strack and field program for the 2017-18 academic year with the hiring of Inez Turneras the new head coach.

“I am particularly excited about expanding the participation opportunities forprospective female student-athletes,” said Athletics Director Anthony Bennett. “Itis a natural step to meet the interest and abilities of female athletes in our region.”

Inez Turner, the former head coach at Winston-Salem State University, willbuild a new program after leading the Rams for the past eight years. Turner, aneight-time Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Coach of the Yearrecipient, won the Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships in her firstyear at the helm for WSSU. She has coached her programs to nine conferencetitles: four women’s cross country, three women’s indoor track and field, one women’soutdoor track and field, and one men’s cross country.

“I am very excited to start this next chapter in my life, that is ordained by thehighest supreme,” said Turner. “I thank God for what I have achieved at WSSU, butI am ready and excited for this new challenge.

“When I researched the area, the local schools, and the community, FayettevilleState is a great place to start a true track and field program from scratch. I enjoyedworking for [Associate Athletics Director] Anthony Bennett at Winston-Salem Statewhen I had to directly report to him. With the impact that he left at WSSU, it is ablessing to have another opportunity to work for him again.”

The sponsorship of women’s indoor and outdoor track and field will increasesports offered from six to eight female programs. FSU currently offers cross coun-try, volleyball, basketball, bowling, tennis, and softball. The Department of Athleticsis in discussions with local schools for facility usage.

“Our goal is to start modestly in the Fall of 2017 with cross country and begincompetition in the Spring of 2018 with the new outdoor program,” added Bennett.

Recruitment of student-athletes will begin this summer. A contact form is avail-able for women with aspirations in participating in women’s track and field for theFayetteville State University Broncos at http://bit.ly/2rac8RF.

The Broncos women’s track and field team finished the 2000 CIAA Track &Field Championships in fifth place.

Founded in 1867, FSU is the second-oldest public institution in North Carolina.A member of the University of North Carolina System, FSU has more than 6,100students and offers degrees in more than 60 undergraduate and graduate degreeprograms.

Vehicle Checklist For Car Pool Season

Carpooling can save time, money and the environment—and make getting to school more fun.

(NAPSI)—If any of the nearly 56 million chil-dren in the country getting ready to go back toschool via car pools are yours, you can help makesure all the vehicles involved are kid safe and roadready with a five-point checklist:

1. Check lights and wipers for visibility. Withshorter days and inclement weather ahead, makesure lights and wipers function properly so that youcan see and be seen. Check the exterior and inte-rior lights and replace any that are dimming, rap-idly blinking or not functioning. Check wiperblades for signs of wear and replace if necessary.

2. Get an annual brake inspection. The brak-ing system is your car’s most important safety fea-ture. Before car pool season gets in full swing, make sure that your brakes are functioning prop-erly. Schedule a brake inspection and look forwarning signs that your vehicle may need brakeservices, such as an illuminated brake light orscreeching, grinding or clicking noises when ap-plying the brakes.

3. Check tires for underinflation or excessivewear. Check tire pressure and refill underinflatedtires, including the spare, look for uneven wear andcheck tread depth. An easy way to do the latter isby placing a penny head-down in the tread groove. If the tread does not cover Lincoln’s head, it’s timeto replace your tires.

4. Make sure everyone is buckled up. The National Highway TrafficSafety Administration (NHTSA) website has important tips on seat beltfit and position. For the younger ones riding along, the site has infor-mation about how to install car seats as well as guidelines on selectinga car seat or booster based on your child’s age and size.

5. Consider a back-up detection device. Consider having a back-updetection device installed that provides rearview video or warning soundswhen moving in reverse. While drivers should not rely solely on these
