ark.Pitch-dark.
The kind where you cant tell if youre next to a thousand
other people, standing totally alone . . .
. . . or about to step off a cliff.
We should stay close, Dash Conroy said, his voice echo-
ing in the vast empty space.
Im fine on my own, Anna Turner replied curtly.
Anna wasnt about to show weakness or fear, especially
not in front of Dash. There was too much at stake. This was a
competition she was determined to win.
We can help each other, Dash argued. At least until we
figure out what the real challenge is.
Their assignment was clear: retrieve the golden flag. Who-
ever got it first would be the winner. Simple, except navigating
their way through the darkness wasnt their only task. Some-
thing else would be waiting for them. An obstacle. A puzzle.
A test.
Danger was out there. They both knew it.
They just couldnt see it.

ash stared out of his bedroom window at the dark, empty streets of downtown Orlando, Florida.
It was one week before he and Anna would encounter the
Raptogon hologram and a solid year since he had first heard
about the Project Alpha competition. The very next day, he
would leave to begin the final phase. Hundreds of thousands of
kids from all over the world had entered for a chance to become
part of the project. He was one of eight finalists. Eventually
there would be only four winners. Dash never expected to get
that far. He thought he stood a better chance of finding a golden
ticket in a Wonka Bar than making the final four.
Yet there he was with a fifty-fifty chance.
I cant get used to this, Dashs mother said as she entered
the room. When the lights go out, its like the world dies.
She joined Dash at the window and looked out over the
darkened city. No lights glowed from any of the tall buildings.
Cars were left to sit until their owners returned the next day
when they were allowed to drive again. It was the beginning
of the daily eight-hour blackout period that happened all over

The f irst competit ion is about how you want tospend your time here. You will be living in dorms. Boys in one,
girls in the other. They are functional and comfortable.
Kind of like camp, Niko said.
However, Phillips continued, one of you will be invited
to stay in your own private quarters with a queen bed, a private
bathroom, and your own refrigerator.
Who gets to stay there? Carly asked.
Phillips held up a handkerchief-sized golden flag.
Your first challenge, he declared. Scattered throughout
the arena are a few dozen golden flags like this one. Some are
in plain sight, others youll have to hunt for. The first person
who retrieves four flags will be staying in the superior quarters
for the duration of your stay. Question is, how badly do you
want it?
The kids all stood staring at Phillips, not sure how to react.
Phillips pointed to a door on the far side of the hangar
and said, The arena is through there. The competition
begins . . . now.
