!We are excited to present our long-awaited concert series, now “On Demand,” presenting world-class artists. Last spring Jazzmobile re-affirmed our 56 years of commitment to you, our community, our supporters and other stake holders, that we would not cancel, New York City's longest running Jazz festival, SUMMERFEST.
For certain it was a leap of faith and we have honored our pledge to you!
Thanks to our donors and partners, including individuals, this year’s Summerfest can be seen August 8th –. October 31st. The line-up of legends, masters, and other greats includes: NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Owens, Allan Harris, Bobby Sanabria, Wycliffe Gordon, Alyson Williams, Marc Cary & Ben Williams (Harlem Sessions), Craig Harris, and Lynette Washington. All have been recorded at locations – such as Grant’s Tomb, Marcus Garvey Park, Minton’s Playhouse, Bronx Music Heritage Center, Central Park, and a special tribute message at Charlie Parker’s East Village home. Following their premiere all programs became available and can now be viewed through October 31st as often as you like and can be shared.

THE MARC CARY – BEN WILLIAMS PROJECT | HARLEM SESSIONS
MARC CARY A brilliant and adventurous post bop pianist, Washington, D.C. native and now Harlem resident, Marc Cary stands apart by way of pedigree and design as one of New York’s best jazz pianists. None in his prestigious peer group ever set the groove behind the drums in DC go-go bands nor are any others graduates of both Betty Carter and Abbey Lincoln's daunting ” bandstand academies.” Cary hails from a musically gifted family--his mother is a cellist; his great grandmother was a pianist who rocked barrelhouse and stride duets with Eubie Blake!
Cary, an instructor of improvisation at the Manhattan School of Music, is training young emerging artists, and providing a public stage in NYC clubs. BEN WILLIAMS A native of D.C , Williams began playing bass at the age of 10. His post undergraduate work earned him a Master of Music from Juilliard, in 2009, he won the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Bass Competition, and in 2016 was introduced as one of the “25 for the Future” by!DownBeat!magazine. Now a Harlemite he has become an acclaimed bassist, bandleader, performer, educator, and composer

CRAIG HARRIS is a well-established trombonist and composer. He graduated from the music program at State University of New York at Old Westbury. He was influenced by the music program founder and director, Makanda Ken McIntyre. Harris can easily weave through the sounds of jazz, whether that be the growling sounds of New Orleans, modern beats or a retro, ‘60s-style flair. A collaborative artist, Harris has played with his professors at SUNY and an impressive list of jazz legends – Sun Ra, Cecil Taylor, The WORLD Saxophone Quartet, The Roots, Rakim and Lester Bowie, to name a few. Harris’ solo projects are described on his website as displaying “a unique sense of concept and a total command of the sweeping expanse of musical expression.” With projects like “Souls Within the Veil” and “Brown Butterfly,” which were based on the works and legacy of W.E.B. DuBois and Muhammad Ali respectively, do exactly that.

Jazz drummer Winard Harper leads his own group known as Jeli Posse in performances around the United States while also playing and recording with many great jazz artists such as the well-known Delfeayo Marsalis and NEA Jazz Master, (the late) Jimmy Heath. Winard’s first big performance was in 1982 where he played alongside Dexter Gordon and he went on to spend four years as a drummer for the legendary singer Betty Carter. This experience prepared him to be a bandleader and in the late 1980s, Winard partnered with his brother, Philip, to launch the Harper Brothers. The group subsequently went on to become one of the hottest jazz groups in the world. Additionally, Winard served as a drummer for NEA Jazz Master, Dr. Billy Taylor whilst also headlining at prestigious venues such as the Kennedy Center and Yoshi’s Jazz Club. Harper’s Jeli Posse is highly in-demand to play at festivals, concerts and jazz clubs. Winard received the Hot House Jazz Award for Favorite Drummer. In 2016.

Dr. Taylor!was the first to create a Jazz music performance and
appreciation course curriculum for NYC public school students.!
Today, Jazzmobile is still a model for other similar programs.
For most people Jazzmobile is synonymous with its summer
program, Summerfest, which has presented free, public concerts
in Harlem and other neighborhoods in New York City for fifty-six
years.! It is New York City’s longest running Jazz festival.
Jazzmobile’s presentation of high quality Jazz education
programs, its service to underserved communities and its
services to the field of Jazz are well understood and highly
valued by its stakeholders, colleagues and audiences.! ! Earlier,
when funding permitted, Jazzmobile also toured nationally and
internationally.!
Jazzmobile was founded in 1964 by Dr. Billy Taylor and Daphne Arnstein.! After Billy’s return from the March on Washington, and a visit with Daphne to the NY World’s Fair! Billy then reached out to Jimmy Heath to create the pioneering performance and education programs. Its purpose was to bring these programs to underserved Harlem communities and to play a major role in the renaissance of jazz. Today it is still a model for similar programs around the world.
