In the Classroom All of our VPKers are continuing to have so much fun learning and playing in their classrooms. We can see how much they have grown and progressed in just a few months. This month your child will begin their Helping Handsunit, where they will learn all about community helpers. In addition, we will take some time out to learn all about early American history and the first Thanksgiving. As we move through the year the children will be learning a variety of sight words. Each sight word is an important building block for your childs literacy skills. It is important that you practice these words and work with your child on a regular basis so they will strengthen the foundations for early reading. As you see more pre-decodables coming home we hope that you are taking the time to really encourage your child to read them to you. Watching your child develop early literacy skills is such a rewarding experience. Parent Teacher Conferences Parent/Teacher conferences will be held on Monday November 11th. This will be a chance for you to speak to the teachers about your childs progress report and VPK assessment, as well as, their development in the class. There will be a sign up sheet post- ed on your childs classroom door with time slots throughout the day. We encourage all our families to meet with your childs teach- er, because touching base with our parents is a vital way for eve- ryone to come togeth- er to help your child be successful and accomplish their VPK goals. Upcoming Events As we move through the Autumn months we will be enjoying lots of great holiday activities and hopefully some cooler temperatures. As Winter approaches we have some fun events lined up for you and your child to enjoy. We hope everyone will join us for our annual Winter Wonderland Celebration on Wednesday December 18th. In the Classroom

All of our VPKers are continuing to have so much fun learning and playing in

their classrooms. We can see how much they have grown

and progressed in just a few months. This month your child will begin their

“Helping Hands” unit, where they will learn all about community helpers. In addition, we will take some time out to learn all about early American history

and the first Thanksgiving.

As we move through the year the children will be learning a variety of sight words. Each sight word is an important building block for your child’s literacy skills. It is important that you practice these words and work with your child on a regular

basis so they will strengthen the foundations for early reading. As you see

more pre-decodables coming home we hope that you are taking the time to really encourage your child to read them to you. Watching your child develop early literacy

skills is such a rewarding experience.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Parent/Teacher conferences will be held on Monday November 11th. This will be a chance for you to speak to the teachers

about your child’s progress report and VPK assessment, as well as, their development in the class. There will be a sign up sheet post-ed on your child’s classroom door with time slots throughout the day. We encourage all our families to meet with your child’s teach-er, because touching base with our parents is a vital way for eve-ryone to come togeth-er to help your child

be successful and accomplish their VPK

goals.

As we move through the Autumn months we will be enjoying lots of great holiday activities and hopefully some cooler temperatures. As Winter approaches we have some fun events

lined up for you and your child to enjoy. We hope everyone will join us for our

annual Winter Wonderland Celebration on Wednesday December 18th. (Due to construction, this event will be held at

our Bayside Lake’s school.) During this spectacular event your child will put on a special performance with their class that is sure to dazzle and amaze. We will also transform PCA into a land of Christmas magic and “you know who” may even

4 interesting facts about your child’s brain!

• Childhood is key. The brain

makes the most connections among its cells before your

child turns 10. This is also the

time when he learns language

best. When you use rich

language with your young child, you are improving his

future vocabulary.

• The brain builds itself based

on repetitive sensory

experiences. The language

portion of the brain is

enhanced greatly by interaction

with others because the brain can then connect words with

objects and experiences.

• Movement gets the brain

going. An active body makes

for an active brain, so make

learning a hands-on affair.

• Music boosts learning.

Singing, listening to, and

playing music improves spatial

orientation and mathematical thinking. Plus, rhyming builds

language skills.

Mayflower Munch Mix

This is a great activity that allows you and your child to spend some time together creating a fun snack

while reviewing important learning skills. The skills that you

can work on are: measuring, counting, sorting, tasting and talking about salty and sweet foods. Here are the ingredients:

• Pretzel sticks

• Chex or Life cereal

• M&M’s

• Candy Corn

• Raisins or dried cranberries

Mix ingredients together evenly and serve.

VPK Sight Word List

Below is a list of sight words or high frequency words your child will be working on throughout the school year.. Memorizing these words help with fluency and increase early reading skills. Our sight word for this month is:

Get Ahead of Sepsis

What is Sepsis? Sepsis is the body’s extreme response to an infection. It is

life-threatening, and without timely treatment, sepsis can rapidly lead to

tissue damage, organ failure, and death. Sepsis happens when an infection

you already have– in your skin, lungs, urinary tract or somewhere

else– triggers a chain reaction throughout your body.

How can I get ahead of Sepsis?

1. Talk to your doctor about steps you can take to prevent infections.

2. Practice good hygiene.

3. Know the symptoms of sepsis (confusion or disorientation, shortness of

breath, high heart rate, fever or shivering, extreme pain or discomfort,

clammy or sweaty skin).

4. ACT FAST! Get medical care immediately if you suspect sepsis or have

an infection that is not getting better or is getting worse.

Did you know???

The world’s largest birthday cake was created by the city of Las

Vegas to celebrate its 100th birth-day. The 130,000 pound, 52-foot wide cake took 600 volunteers to

make. Yuummmm!!
