Agenda and Objectives
Background on Veeam Backup & Replication and vPower
Define network elements
● vPower NFS datastore
● Proxy appliance for networking
● How they are used
− SureBackup
− Instant VM Recovery
− Virtual Lab / Sandbox
Demos ● vPower, Instant VM Recovery, etc.
Veeam Backup & Replication
Breakthrough technology
Publishes the backup as a regular VMDK file ● Compressed, deduplicated, incremental
Runs a VM directly from the backup file ● Runs on regular backup storage
● Does not make any changes to the backup file
Automatically manages an isolated virtual lab ● Workflow engine manages requests
● Proxy appliance provides access into the isolated environment
“This is why I love Veeam. They take all the virtualization
technology pieces on the table and put them together into a
functioning business solution.” – Brett Westover
IT Administrator Therapeutic Research Center
What is vPower networking and who is it for?
This material is targeted to System Admins, VMware
administrators, and the “do it all” IT staff who has to also
deal with networking.
vPower “networking” is simply a proprietary NFS
datastore ● Not your typical NFS datastore
● Reads and writes are handled in a special manner
How it works
Proxy appliance will keep on demand sandbox off of the production network.
VMProxy
appliance
VMAdmin
console
Multiple VMs staged in virtual lab running from backup file.
The production Veeam Backup server can launch an on-demand sandbox.
vPower NFS Datastore
Provides a “window” into the backup repository ● Backup file integrity must be preserved
Windows service running on Veeam Server or proxies
vPower NFS Datastore
Mounted to FQDN of Veeam Backup & Replication
server (or proxy)
Recommended to provision vPower NFS datastore to
one host or provision one function per host if more are
needed
vPower NFS Datastore - Writes
vPower NFS Datastore - Reads
vPower NFS Datastore
Each repository can leverage a vPower NFS datastore,
a specific proxy is designated to provide it.
Instant VM Recovery
Fast: starts VM directly
from backup file
Readily available: uses existing backups
and backup storage
Buys you time: users keep working
while you troubleshoot
the problem
jr_on_the_cloud: Did a VM restore using Veeam yesterday.
Worked perfectly and was very easy. Impressed!
How it works
Instant Recovery
X
Demo
Instant VM Recovery vPower NFS datastore provisioning to ESXi host
What happens to a VM with vPower
The recovery point is enumerated from the vPower NFS
datastore ● VM inventoried to vSphere
● VM powered on
vPower NFS appears as read/write to ESX(i) ● Backup file integrity must be preserved
− Redirected writes (virtual lab, SureBackup)
− vPower handle them directly (Instant VM Recovery)
VMworld session available for replay! ● SPO3981 Veeam Backup & Replication: A Look Under the Hood
− Can be played online at VMworld.com
SureBackup, Virtual Lab, U-AIR
How do they leverage the vPower NFS datastore?
Masquerade IP addressing is the secret sauce
● Like NAT of cable router, except the perspective is reversed
− Let select traffic in, and nothing out (demo forthcoming)
● IP tables are built in wizard and create a runtime environment
for virtual lab proxy appliance (non-persistent)
● vPower (virtual lab, SureBackup) VMs are implicitly firewalled
● Virtual lab VM handles all inbound
− Only outbound is Internet for updates, optionally, and that
web traffic is proxied
Critical step of virtual lab
Networking and isolation from production
VMs in virtual lab (and U-AIR restore) can listen to and
accept connections ● Non-persistent network proxy appliance (virtual lab)
● Cannot interact with application in production
● No USN interference for Windows systems
● No application interference (data moving from one system to another)
Virtual lab network proxy appliance is where static
routes are sent to the masquerade IP address ● For external access, U-AIR application will make static route
