FOLK GAMES OF TAMILNADU & PONDICHERRY
126 different kinds of traditional games in Tamil Nadu almost all of which are still being played in rural areas. Songs and conversations are part and parcel of some of the games played. This is true especially with children’s games that are played with a view to develop their language ability.
The majority of the games have in them arithmetic and mathematical concepts and also enable the participants to develop some of the basic mathematical skills such as decision making, predicting, counting, using the four operations, making sets, understanding probability and so on.

Games related to physical skill
Driving the bullock cart is a sort of competitive game. Here the person who drives the cart does not exhibit any physical skill. On the basis of the ability of the bull the victory is decided. If the person who runs along with the cast exhibits his physical skill, the victory is made easy.
In this type of games the first place is not given to physical skill. Chiefly games of mental skill are indoor games. (Individual game)

The word "pallankuzhi" is also used in Tamil according to Balambal Ramaswami as a generic name for mancala games that are mostly played by Tamil women in South India and northern Sri Lanka.
1.Pallankuzhi
The traditional games also have other interesting uses. For example, Pallanguzhi, besides being a great way to strengthen mathematical concepts, is an excellent Braille game as it involves 'touching and feeling'
In fact, the Kottakkal Arya Vaidyashala, an ayurveda centre, even prescribes the game to improve arthritis.
Pallamkuzhi is an ancient game played by south Indian Woman folk in their spare time.
We do not have a complete written evidence about it or rules and regulations of the game.
The game is also played in traditional marriages. The game is mainly played by two persons.
The instrument, which is used, is constructed out of teak wood.
Tayakattaiis a similar game still played to some extent in South India. The dice are 2 brass rectangular sticks with engraved dots on all of their sides to denote the numbers. These are rolled in the palm and slid on the floor.

This family entertainer reminded me of the group games popularised by Krishnaraja Wadiyar III, the motive of this improvisation is simple that more persons can be involved in the same game.
Snakes and ladders, the ancient way
Snakes and ladders, is a classic children's board game. It is played between 2 or more players on a playing board with numbered grid squares.

Snakes and Ladders originated in India as a game based on morality called Vaikuntapaali or Paramapada Sopanam (the ladder to salvation).

4. Seethaipandi is a solitaire game played mostly by women in the state of Tamil Nadu. The game's name refers to the goddess Sita Devi.
5. KITTIPUL
Every village is dotted with youngsters doing different things and doing it differently. And, it is not as if these rural sports do not have any rules. In a few cases, the rules may change from place to place, but, usually, they are the same
As an amateur youth sport, Kitti pullu (gilli-danda) has many variations. A common variation is where the striker is allowed to hit the gilli twice, once initially, and then while the gilli is in the air.
In the Philippines a game known as syatong is similar to gilli-danda.In Italy a similar game known as "Lippa“In the United States, a similar game is called pee-wee.
In some versions, the points a striker scores is dependent on the distance the gilli falls from the striking point. The distance is measured in terms of the length of the danda, or in some cases the length of the gilli. Scoring also depends on how many times the gilli was hit in the air in one strike. If it travels a certain distance with two mid-air strikes, the total point is doubled.

6. Silambam
Silambam (Tamil: சி�லம்பம்) is a weapon-based Dravidian martial art from Tamil Nadu. It is also practiced by the Tamil community of Malaysia.
In Tamil, the word silambam refers to the bamboo staff which is the main weapon used in this style. Other weapons are also used such as deer horn, knife and sword. Unarmed silambam, called Kuttu Varisai, utilizes stances and routines based on animal movements such as the snake, tiger and eagle forms.
Silambam supposedly originated in the Kurinji hills, present day South Indian state Kerala almost 5000 years ago. The Narikuravar of the area are said to have used staves called chilambamboo in battle and to defend themselves against wild animals. They would also perform solo stick-fighting demonstrations during Hindu religious festivals. The art was patronized by the ancient Chola, Chera and Pandya kings of South India during the Sangam period. The Maravar pada of Travancore kings used silambam in their warfare against enemies.
The soldiers of King Veerapandiya Kattabomman (1760–1799) relied mainly on their silambam prowess in their warfare against the British Army.

9. Kabaddi is primarily an Indian game, not much is known about the origin of this game. There is concrete evidence, that the game is 4,000 year old. It is a team sport, which requires both skill and power, and combines the characteristics of wrestling and rugby.
It is a rather simple and inexpensive game, and neither requires a massive playing area, nor any expensive equipment. This explains the popularity of the game in rural India. Kabaddi is played all over Asia with minor variations.

Adu Puli Attam - is a strategy game, needing skill, concentration, analysis, anticipation and planning. In this game, the opponents' strength has to be assessed and both defensive and offensive tactics have to be employed. It can be played by two people or two teams. According to the rules, the tigers have to kill the goats, while the goats have to encircle their predators. Interestingly, Adu Puli Attam is popular with corporate houses during training sessions.

Kallanga:
One of the great & traditional Game of Tamil Nadu. Usually played with a group of people.Stones of medium size will be put on the floor not just one or two but usually 200 or 300 stones. All the stones will be put on the floor and the player will be having one stone hand in his/her hand and have to pick in pairs by throwing the single stone in hand up and then again catch the stone again which has been throwed in up in air with the stones picked from the floor. And the main rule of the game is that while picking stones from the floor you should not touch the other stones. If you touch, your turn finishes and the next person’s chance begins. If you all also leave the catch after picking the stones from the floor your turn ends and the next persons chance begins.
