4Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård leads a program of fascinating contrasts. Beginning with a truly Classical symphony, we then move to VSO Concertmaster Dale Barltrop’s interpretation of the essentially late-Romantic First Violin Concerto by one of the twentieth century’s most important composers, Béla Bartók – then, it’s back to Beethoven, and the very first stirrings of the Romantic age.

Bramwell Tovey

Rising-star pianist Inon Barnatan, recently appointed as the New York Philharmonic’s first Artist-in-Association, performs the colossal Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1 in his VSO debut, in the VSO’s Season-opening concerts with Maestro Bramwell Tovey. The season-opening concert also features Richard Strauss’s famous Also Sprach Zarathustra (Thus Spake Zarathustra), an epic tone poem presented as a celebration of the 150th anniversary of the composer’s birth.

1CONCERT

Diego Matheuz

Exciting young Venezuelan conductor Diego Matheuz makes his Vancouver conducting debut in an evening of magnificent music-making. Maestro Matheuz conducts the rich musical tapestry that is the Symphonie Fantastique, and beloved Canadian pianist Marc-André Hamelin performs Mozart.

Conductor Lahav Shani makes his VSO debut in a program that beautifully mixes Classical and Romantic composition. Ryu Goto – Midori’s younger brother, and a superb violinist in his own right – scales the Mount Everest of violin concertos, and the second half comes to a ringing conclusion with Tchaikovsky’s exciting Symphony No. 5.

Mesmerizing Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt performs two passionate pianistic showcases – one an Andalusian-flavoured masterpiece, the other a French classic, commissioned by an Austrian pianist who lost his right arm during World War I. Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin is another work influenced by the First World War (and originally written for solo piano), and Mexican composer Arturo Marquez’s work harkens back to Second World War times.

Maestro Tovey and the VSO commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I, with Benjamin Britten’s monumental, beautiful and intense War Requiem. The War Requiem brilliantly melds to profound effect the traditional Latin Requiem texts with moving poetry by Wilfred Owen, a poet who was killed a week before the end of the First World War. The War Requiem’s massive orchestral and choral forces powerfully communicate a message that resonates through the decades, a message that is as relevant today as ever.

Bramwell Tovey conducts a powerful, emotional concert, including Bruckner’s mighty Romantic Symphony, and one of Canada’s fastest-rising classical music stars, Katherine Chi, performs Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3.

VSO Music Director Bramwell Tovey conducts Mahler’s magnificent Symphony No. 5, a work that marked a complete departure from Mahler’s previous symphonies, but is no less significant in scope, scale and inspiration.

Hailed as one of the greatest pianists of the twenty-first century, superstar Yevgeny Sudbin performs one of the most famous and popular works in the classical repertoire, Tchaikovsky’s exciting Piano Concerto No. 1. Ryan McAdams makes his VSO conducting debut.

Exquisite Canadian pianist Janina Fialkowska performs Ravel’s G Major Piano Concerto, a work heavily influenced by the Paris jazz scene in the late 1920s. Franz Schubert’s gift for melody was second only to Mozart, and his Symphony No. 5 is one of the most melodic and Mozart-like of all of his great works. The 2015 VSO SPRING FESTIVAL focuses on the music of the greatest composer who ever lived, and one of history’s greatest creative geniuses: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Beginning with the Oscar®-winning film Amadeus, MOZART PLUS explores the music of this extraordinary composer, and the writings of some of the many composers who were influenced by his miraculous music.

Maestro Bramwell Tovey and the VSO lead us through Mozart’s life and career, starting with two very different explorations of the apocryphal legend of Salieri’s poisoning of Mozart; we hear Mozart’s very first symphony, as well as his three last, great symphonies; an aria from Don Giovanni; one of Mozart’s great Serenades; funeral music written for Mozart’s Masonic Lodge; and his last composition, the Requiem — an unfinished work that lay at Mozart’s bedside as he died a tragically-early death at the age of 36.

Along the way, we also explore the results of Richard Strauss’s life-long worship of Mozart as a “god of composition” in his treatment of the story of Don Juan, also the subject of Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni; Tchaikovsky’s commemoration of the 100th anniversary of that same Mozart opera; the intertwined music and history of Haydn, Brahms and Mozart; and Rimsky-Korsakov’s operatic take on the legend of Mozart and Salieri.

Join Maestro Tovey and the VSO for SPRINGFEST 2015: MOZART PLUS.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30, 7:30PM ORPHEUM THEATREGillian Anderson conductor

A Hallowe’en spectacular! The great 1922 Silent Film Nosferatu is the original Dracula movie.

No charming aristocrat like later Draculas, this vampire is scary and macabre, a living corpse

who feeds mercilessly on his victims. Hailed as one of the greatest movie adaptations of the

vampire legend, aided by Max Schrek’s frightening performance as Count Orlock, Nosferatu will

be presented with the music performed live by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. You’ll never

have more fun being scared, celebrating
