SPECIFICATION FOR ALUMINIUM ALLOY AA6351 SHEET AND PLATE

1.0 SCOPE

This specification covers flat sheet of Aluminium Alloy AA6351 in O, T4 and T6 temper conditions, and plate in O, T451, and T651 Temper Conditions for non pressurized structural members. This specification is also applicable for the nearest equivalent designations B51S/ IS: 64430/ B.S.: H30.

2.0 APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS

2.1 The following standards from a part of this specification to the extent specified herein. The latest issue of these documents in effect on the date of material purchase shall be applicable.

2.2 ASTM Standards

3.0 CHEMICAL COMPOSITION

Conformation to chemical composition shall be determined by the producer by analysis samples taken at the time the ingots are poured, or from the finished product.

3.2.1 Number of samples: The number of samples taken for determination of chemical composition shall be as follows.

3.2.1.1 When samples are taken at the time the ingots are poured, at least one sample shall be taken for each group of ingots poured simultaneously from the same source of molten metal. Complete ingot analysis records shall be available at the producer’s plant to the purchaser.

3.2.1.2 When compliance with 3.2.1.1 cannot be established, samples from finished product shall be selected as specified in 3.2.1.2.1 or 3.2.1.2.2 for the type of product being tested.

3.2.1.2.1 For sheet, one sample shall be selected for each 900 kg. or fraction thereof of a lot.

3.2.1.2.2 For sheet, one sample shall be selected for each 1800 kg. or fraction thereof of a lot.

3.2.2 Lot Definition

An inspection lot shall consist of an identifiable quantity of the material of the same mill form, alloy temper and thickness traceable to a heat treated lot and subjected to inspection at one time.

4.0 MACRO – ETCH TEST

4.1 Macro-etch test shall be carried out at the billet or slab stage prior to rolling of the sheet or plate.

4.2 Macro-etch samples shell be taken from the billet or slab representing a location, both top and bottom of the ingot after adequate removal of metal to eliminate piping and other harmful defects. The test shell be carried out on the entire cross section of the billet or slab.

4.3 Macro-etch test shell be carried out in accordance with ASTM E 340. Structure shell be free from columnar grain, discontinuities and voids such as seams, laps, porosity, cracks, etc.

5.0 SUPPLY CONDITION

5.1 Sheet: Sheets covered by this specification of classified as three types depending on the heat treatment given:

The products shell be supplied in the following conditions.

5.1.1 Annealed to O Temper.

5.1.2 Solution heat treated and naturally aged to T4 Temper.

5.1.3 Solution and precipitation heat treated to T6 Temper.

5.2 Plate: Plate covered by this specification are classified as three types depending on the heat treatment given.

5.2.1 Annealed to O Temper.

5.2.2 Solution heat treated, stretched to produce a nominal permanent set of 2% but not less then 1.5% nor more than 3% and naturally aged to T451 Temper.

5.2.3 Solution heat treated, stretched to produce a nominal permanent set of 2% but not less then 1.5% nor more than 3% and naturally aged to T651 Temper.

5.2.4 Plates shall receive no further straightening operations after stretching for T651 Temper.

5.3 The Temper condition shall be as specified in the purchase order.

5.4 Surface Finished: Standard uniform bright finish on each side.

6.0 HEAT TREATMENT

6.1 Shall be carried out in accordance with ASTM B 597.

6.2 Heat Treatment Furnace

Can be treated in either molten salt baths or air chamber furnaces. When using for salt baths, temperature has to be carefully controlled and use of nitrate baths in to be avoided for aluminium-magnesium alloys. Air chamber furnaces may be oil-or-gas fired or may be electrically heated (Air circular electrically heated furnace is preferable). The atmosphere in air chamber furnaces must be controlled to prevent high-temperature oxidation during solution heat treatment.

6.3 Calibration

Heat treatment equipment is to be calibrated for ensuring uniform and correct temperature as per ASTM B 597.

(A)-Shorter soaking times are satisfactory when the soak time is accurately determined by thermocouples attached to the load or when other metal temperature measuring devices are used.

(B)-The thickness is the minimum dimension of the thickest section.

6.5 The heat treatment practice described in the above sections is typical. Optimum heat treatment cycle to achieve the property requirements of this specification shall be generated by the supplier shell be reported.

7.0 MECHANICAL PROPERTIES

7.1 Tensile Properties

7.1.1 The sheet and plate shall conform to the requirement for tensile

properties as specified in table 7.1.1

7.1.2 Sampling for tensile properties

7.1.2.1.1 For steel, one sample shall be selected for each 900 kg or fraction thereof of a lot for making three specimens.

7.1.2.1.2 For plate, one sample shall be selected for each 1800 kg or fraction thereof of a lot for making three specimens.

7.1.2.2 Specimen Orientation, Location and Size

7.1.2.2.1 Specimen shall be taken perpendicular to the direction of rolling from widths of 229 mm and greater, and parallel to the direction of rolling from widths less the 229 mm.

7.1.2.2.2 The Standard 12.5mm wide rectangular tensile test specimen on pin-loaded tensile test specimen with 50 mm gauge length of ASTM B 557M shall be used for sheet and plate less than 12.5mm in thickness.

7.1.2.2.3 For plate 12.5 mm and greater in thickness, the standard 12.5 mm round tensile test specimen with 62.5 mm (5 times Dia. Or 5.65√A) GAUGE LENGTH OF ASTM B 557m or smaller round specimen proportional to it shall be used. The tensile test specimen shall be taken midway between the two surfaces of plate 12.5mm through 37.5mm in thickness and midway between the centre and surface of plate over 37.5 mm in thickness.

7.1.3 The tension test shall be done in accordance with ASTM B 557M.

7.2 HARDNESS TEST

7.2.1 The hardness shall be checked in accordance with ASTM E 10.

7.2.2 The hardness values shall not be lower than 32 HB/10/500 for O Temper, 60HB /10/500 FOR T4/T451 Tempers and 95 HB/10/500 for T6/T651 Tempers. However, the product shall not be rejected on the basic of hardness if the applicable tensile property requirements as per table 7.1.1 are met.

8.0 QUALITY

8.1 Sheet and plate as received by the purchaser, shall be uniform in quality and condition, sound and free from foreign materials and from internal and external imperfections detrimental to the usage of the sheet and plate.

8.2 Ultrasonic Inspection

8.2.1 For sheet and plate below 12.5mm in nominal thickness, ultrasonic inspection shall be done at billet level as per AMS 2630B (normal beam) and the acceptance level shall be QUALITY CLASS A (single defect dia. 2.0mm FBH and multiple/ linear defects dia 1.2mm FBH)

9.0 METALLURGICAL ANALYSIS

9.1 Metallographic examination shall be carried out as per ASTM E3 AND E 407.The material shall be of uniform grain size and free from micro-porosity, stringers, segregation etc.

9.2 Eutectic Melting and High-Temperature Oxidation.

9.2.1 High-Temperature Oxidation and eutectic melting samples shall be sectioned, polished to appropriate fineness and the un-etched surface examined at 500 magnifications to detect evidence of high-temperature oxidation. The section may then be mildly etched (for 2 seconds) in kellers reagent to reveal evidence of eutectic melting. The high-temperature oxidation test is applicable only to material solution heat treated in air furnaces.

9.2.2 There shall be no eutectic melting and no evidence of high temperature oxidation.

9.3 Samples for Metallurgical Analysis Shall be taken as described in Section 7.1.2.1.in the event of sheets/plates of different thickness are involved in a single heat treatment batch, micro analysis of all items shall be carried out.

9.4 Grain Size: Average grain width shall be less than 150µm and average grain length shall be less than 450µm.

10.0 DIMENSIONAL TOLERANCES

10.1 Unless Otherwise Specified, Tolerances Shall Conform To All Applicable General requirements of BS 4L100/AMS 2202/MAM 2202.

11.0 IDENTIFICATION MARKING: As per 1.0 of VSSC: FPD: GEN-1:2013.

12.0 PPRESERVATION AND PACKING: As per 2.0 of VSSC: FPD: GEN-1:2013.

13.0 RE-SAMPLING AND RE-TESTING: As per 3.0 of VSSC: FPD: GEN-1:2013.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR SHEET, PLATE, EXTRUSIONS AND FORGINGS OF ALUMINIUM ALLOYS AND MAGNESIUM

ALLOYS

1.0 IDENTIFICATION MARKING

1.1 FOR SHEET, PLATE, AND EXTRUSION PRODUCTS

1.1.1 Each sheet and plate shall be marked over the surface at intervals of 250mm and not less than 300mm and each extrusion product over the surface with the following details.

1.1.1.1 → Manufacturer’s Name → Specification → Heat number → Ingot Number and serial Number → Size → Alloy Number and Temper → Thickness → Purchase Order Number

→ Inspector’s stamp for clearance

1.1.2 The character shall be of such size as to be legible shall be applied using a suitable marking fluid and shall be sufficiently stable to withstand normal handling. The marking shall have no deleterious effect on the product or its performance.

1.1.3 The product shall be packed in such a way to provide adequate protection during normal handling and transportation and each package shall contain only one size, alloy and temper of the material otherwise agreed.

1.1.3.1 Each packing shall be identified with the following details.

1.1.4 Marking for shipment of material shall be in accordance with MIL-STD 129.

1.2 FOR FORGINGS

1.2.1 Each forging shall be steel impression stamped/punched or ink marked with the information required by 1.1.1.1. in addition ,the forging/part number shall also be given.

1.2.2 For hand forging an arrow indicating the direction of longitudinal grain flow shall be included in the marking.

1.2.2.1 The marking on square or rectangular hand forgings shall be on a face parallel to the long transverse grain direction. The marking location for other hand forging such as rounds, biscuits or contoured shapes shall be at the option of the forging vendor, unless otherwise specified.

1.2.3 For ring forging, an arrow indicating the direction of predominant grain flow shall be applied where this direction is other than circumferential.

1.2.4 Marking for forging stock shall be as agreed upon by purchaser and vendor.

1.2.5 Identification of forgings shall be in accordance with AMS 2808.

2.0 PRESERVATION AND PACKING

Preservation and protection during packaging shall conform to level A of MIL-STD-649, the degree required for protection against the most severe conditions known or anticipated to been countered during shipment, handling and storage.

2.1 CLEANING

Surface shall be cleaned thoroughly by non corrosive solvent like acetone to remove any free loose mill scale/loose particles, dirt or corrosion. The presence of residual rolling oil shall not be considered as foreign matter.

2.2 PRESERVATION

Oil used for preservation of products shall conform to the requirements of the standard. Products shall be oiled in all tempers except Alclad products and sheets and plates shall be interleaved.

2.2.1 Application for Preservative Coating

The application of corrosive preventive material demands careful attention; compounds shall not be applied to surfaces which show signs of moisture, condensation frost, rust, loose mill scales, dirt of other contaminations .it is essential to ensure that articles are not handled until the film is set. Application may be dipping, brushing, spraying etc.

2.2.2 Interleaving (for sheets and plates only)

Interleaving paper shall meet the minimum requirements of type 1 as per table 4 of the standard. The interleaving paper shall fully cover the metal, for manual application paper shall extend 25mm beyond sides and ends. For machine application, paper may be same size as metal, provided the metal is fully covered.

2.3 PACKING

All Material must be properly packed in wooden crates or wooden boxes to avoid damage during handling, transportation and in transits products. Can be machining wrapped or hand wrapped.

2.3.1 Packing for Sheets and Plates

2.3.1.1 Products shall be wrapped with one layer of type-II A and two layers of type- III A barriers as stipulated in standard. Type of barrier shall be as per Table 4 of the standard.

2.3.1.2 Wrapped products shall be encased in pallets with pallet enclosure designed as per clause No.:5.3.1.2 of MIL-STD-649C.Material for fabrication shall be as per table 5 of the standard.

2.3.2 Packing for extrusion products

2.3.2.1 Wooden boxes, corrugated fiberboard boxes or fibre tubes can be used for packing. Barrier shall be type II as per Table IV of the standard.

2.3.3 Only one type, class or size of material shall be packed in one container.

2.4 HANDLING

Containers and pallets in their shipping configuration shall be provided with lifting and hosting provisions commensurate with their weight, size and intended mode of transportation to ensure safe and efficient movement, as stipulated in the standard.

3.0 RE-SAMPLING AND RE-TESTING

Failure of any specimen to conform to specified requirements shall causes material represented by such specimen to be subjected to rejection. However, the supplier may go for a retest and the disposition of the products may be base on the result of testing at least two specimens to replace each failed specimen from the original sample. Re-test specimens shall be selected randomly for sheets, plates and extrusion products; and

for forgings retest specimens shall be taken as close as possible to the same location in the same forging or from a second forging from the same lot as was the original unacceptable specimen. All retest samples shall conform to specified requirements. if any retest specimen fails to meet the requirements, the material represented shall be rejected and no further testing permitted. Results of all tests shall be reported.

4.0 INSPECTION

The manufacture shall afford the purchaser’s inspector all reasonable facilities necessary to satisfy him that the material is being produced and finished with the relevant speciation. All tests and inspection shall be made at the place of manufacture unless otherwise agreed to.

5.0 CERTIFICATES AND REPORTS

5.1 Manufacturer shall furnish the following certificates and test reports.

5.1.1 Chemical analysis.

5.1.2 Heat treatment report.

5.1.3 Metallurgical analysis.

5.1.4 Mechanical properties.

5.1.5 Electrical conductivity test report for AA 7075 Alloy.

5.1.6 Stress corrosion test report for AA 7075 Alloy.

5.1.7 Ultrasonic inspection including the statement “Ultrasonically inspected in accordance with AMS standard 2630”

5.1.8 Dimensional inspection report.

6.0 REJECTION

6.1 Any rejection based on tests made in accordance with this specification shall be reported to the manufacturer with in 60days from the receipt of material by purchaser at this site.

6.2 Material that shows rejectable discontinuities prior to or subsequent to acceptance by the purchaser shall be subjected to rejection and manufacturer shall be notified for replacement.

1.1 SCOPE OF WORK: Manufacture and supply of Aero space quality Aluminum Alloy B51S its equivalent AA 6351/IS: 64430 sheets in ‘O’ condition of any reputed manufacturers which should be as per the specification document Nos.: VSSC: FPD: 6351:O-2013 and VSSC: FPD: GEN.-1:2013.

1.2 PACKING CONDITION MUST BE MET: The sheets should be properly packed after applying protective coatings/coverings in easily handling masses to avoid damages in handling/transits with the details of its contents put inside the packing and also pasted or written on it before despatch. All sheets must be properly packed in wooden crates or wooden boxes to avoid damage during handling, transportation and in transits.

2 VSSC reserves right to participate witness the quality control & inspection tests at the manufacturer’s plant/lab or at any other approved laboratories to our choice.

3 Manufacturer of material/processing of material and all its tests as per standards mentioned in the documents shall be carried out in our presence.

4 Our QC engineer(s) will carry out the pre-delivery inspection at your site prior to despatch. All supports with tools, instruments, etc. should be extended to them. Materials that are ready for inspection should be informed to us well in advance (at least one month before) with all its details& test certificates for arranging for pre delivery inspection.

5 Manufacturer/supplier should offer the entire quantity of each item/material with same lot/batch for our inspection and we can’t accept any item/material for part inspection.

6 Material samples shall be identified and selected by us and all test specimens shall be prepared in our presence as per the ASTM/Indian /other standards and the sampling plans mentioned in the document.

7 All material tests as mentioned in the document have to be carried out completely at the expense of manufacturer/supplier in our presence either at manufacturer’s plant/site or at reliable /reputed Govt. approved testing centers/laboratories (list with address has to be submitted) of our choice.

All the materials tests have to be done in our presence according to the ASTM/Indian and other standards mentioned in the specification document.

8 Supplier must provide/submit the manufacturer’s Mills or original material test certificate, which should invariably contain the details of material specification/grade, size of material, manufacturer’s date/month & year of manufacturer, ultrasonic tests on slabs, batch no./order no/lot no./cast no/heat no./melt no.; chemical composition requirement and its analysis results, results of all mechanical tests /hardness tests/macro & micro-etch tests/ultrasonic test/dimensional inspection/heat treatment/metallurgical analysis/grain size tests etc. for each item/product.

9 The manufacturer/supplier must submit the test certificates/reports for chemical analysis, mechanical tests, heat treatment including temperature, time, cycle followed temperature accuracy obtained from the furnace, furnace calibration, ultrasonic tests on slabs, dimensional inspection etc.in three copies as a bound document after conducting all the tests in our presence.

10 Each and every piece of material inspected and accepted for dispatch & supply must bear our inspection engineer’s signature /initials/ identification marks.

11 Sheets belonging to same batch no. /lot no. / cast no/heat no./melt no only packed in strong wooden crates/boxes by tying with metal strips and writing the details on it.

12 The rate per Kg. of material is inclusive of the cost of manufacture, cost of test specimen material, cost of cutting taking the samples, test specimen preparations, identifications of samples & test specimens, conducting all tests, issue of all material test reports/certificates, printing all the details of material on each piece of material, his own& third party inspection etc.

13 Manufacturer/supplier should dispatch the materials only after obtaining material dispatch clearance repot from the concerned.

14 Manufacturer/supplier should supply the materials only in strong wooden crates/boxes to avoid any damages in handling/transportation/transits and the rate per Kg. must be inclusive wooden of crates/boxes, packing charges etc.

15 Each packing should contain its gross weight, packing case/material weight, net weight and the details of the item/material legibly printed and pasted or written on it and also by putting the details of the items/materials packed in inside the packing.

16 The quantity tolerance, if any, can be allowed up to ±10%.it is applicable only for the mass/weight of the material and it is not applicable for the number of sheets.

17 The material should be free from any wrapping/ distortions/ twists/ bends/ undulations/surface imperfections / scratches / damage/ defects/ bad appearances etc.etc. And this must be ensured by the manufacturer/supplier till the items are delivered at our place.
