Welcome to IIWC work camp! Here comes some information about our camp, how to get there, what you
need to bring, etc. We hope this information will give you a lot of ideas and enthusiasm to spend your
vacation together with new people in a new place, and doing something worth to others. Get ready for
happy days in the adventurer world with our craziness and passion to ease your cultural shock.
IIWC is acronym of Indonesia International Work Camp. Informally, IIWC was formed in September 1999 by
IPPA of Central Java (Indonesian Planned Parenthood Association), when IPPA held the first work camp in
Mijen, Semarang Residence incorporate with NICE, a work camp organization from Japan.
Seeing the success and positive result of the first work camp, NICE suggested IPPA to form a work camp
organization. The suggestion was followed by an invitation for NVDA (Network for Voluntary Development
in Asia) meeting in Hanoi Vietnam at 9 - 22 January 2000. In this meeting, we discussed how to run a work
camp and everything about it. Since then, IIWC was born and has been organizing around 30 international
and bilateral workcamps per year in Indonesia and many other international voluntary services with
hundreds of either local or international volunteers involved.
The work camp will be held on 10 14 September 2015.
The workcamp will take place in Tegalrejo sub village, Jatijajar village, Bergas Municipality, Semarang
regency, Central Java. It takes 1.5 hours from the city center of Semarang. Tegalrejo consists of 3,582
people (1.717 male and 1865 female). It is 21KM square with 5 RW and 28 RT (RW and RT is smaller
association for the local people in the village). There are 135 prostitutes working permanently

in the area and many more will come at night as temporary workers. Most of them are working in the
karaoke and the owner.
This workcamp aims to support Tegalrejo shelter long term project. Objectives:
1. To celebrate local childrens birthday 2. To organize activities for the children in
prostitution area 3. To exchange culture between participants, local
people, and local students
At the beginning, IIWC organized the project in
cooperation with NOVIB IDO which concerns in the
prevention of STI and HIV/AIDS in Tegalrejo , a
prostitution area in Semarang uptown. Somehow, after the first HIV/AIDS prevention workcamp in
Tegalrejo on February 2007, this project has turned to be more focus on the education especially
highlighting the mental side of the children in the prostitution. This is due to the lack of concern on this
issue from all stakeholders in Tegalrejo prostitution area. Since then 8 out of 9 workcamps organized in
Tegalrejo have been implementing the projects for KIDS.
From regular workcamps at beginning, then on September 2011 IIWC and NICE group Japan special for
Tegalrejo realized the idea to set up a shelter. This shelter is called Rumah Belajar (Learning house centre).
This shelter is used by volunteers during workcamp to teach
children about how to write, read, do their homework and
Basic English class. In addition, volunteers give children
learning session to have a better manner. Volunteer also
improve childrens creativity by teaching them handcraft,
cooking class, and so on. Time management also needed in
this project, since children have too much enthusiasm, and
somehow it makes the volunteers have no rest time. Along
with the workcamp, there are also long middle term
volunteers who come in random month and stay several
months in this house to run the daily activities with children.

The project will be held in 5 days. First day will be dedicated for arrival and orientation day, and Last day
dedicated for departure day from project site. 3 days in between will be allocated by discussing, preparing,
and celebrating the childrens birthday. There will be daily teaching activities in shelter which can be
language classes, handicraft, arts, dance, etc.
There is possibility for you to know Javanese tradition that is tentatively organized by local
community in the village.
There will be Indonesian class organized by campleaders to teach you basic Indonesian language.
There will be session to learn how to organize project with the children
Workcamp participants could arrange any activities in their daily free time. Somehow, there will be one full
free day. For free day it will be excluded from participant fee, so the campers should bear every expenses
by their own during free day. The camp leaders will provide you any information needed about how to
spend the free day easily. Enjoy!
1. We expect all volunteers to have read and understood this information. Be in time and stay the entire length of the camp.
2. We expect all volunteers are aware the basic concept of international voluntary service, especially international workcamp which is not a cheap way of spending your holiday time but a voluntary activity that needs your high motivation and will to achieve a certain goal together with your team.
3. Realize that the living conditions in Indonesia is different than at home (no warm water/ not clean/no air-conditioning/not easy access to international phone or internet/not easy transportation all the times/ no soft beds/ bugs/mosquitoes, different food etc.etc.).
4. All volunteers should understand the aims of the workcamp and realize that learning about the Indonesian way and the social contact is more important than the manual work.
5. We expect all the volunteers to be open minded, leave prejudice behind and show initiative. 6. We expect all the volunteers NOT TO LEND your gadgets to children. Because we expect children to
study rather than playing with gadget in our Shelter. 7. English should be spoken with other volunteers in the camp, even if these people do not join the
conversation. 8. Volunteers should understand the situation to spend times with local people who do not speak
English very well. Volunteers should make the effort in trying to communicate in basic Indonesian or other ways of communicating (work, pictures, gestures, etc.) If you will try, you will be amazed how quick you will learn basic Bahasa Indonesia!

What if your flight arrives quite late in Jakarta??? Where should you stay???
In case your flight arrives in Jakarta quite late, you can stay in the airport hotel or you can go to Jalan Jaksa for cheap

place to stay from the range of Rp. 100.000,- up to Rp. 180.000,- for one night.
To go to Jalam Jaksa, catch Damri bus to Gambir for Rp. 25.000,- and take traditional orange cab called bajaj for Rp.
15.000,- from the station to Jalan Jaksa. You can find room easily there and just ask the bajaj driver to take you to
some hotels and guess houses available. Then, if you need to go to the airport the following day, just take bajaj to
Gambir and take Damri to Sukarno Hatta airport. Please consider the time because it is quiet long distance and traffic
jams occur in day time.
3. By Bus
From Sukarno Hatta Airport you need to take DAMRI Airport bus with the last destination of either PULOGADUNG
bus terminal, LEBAKBULUS bus terminal, or RAWA MANGUN bus terminal. It costs Rp.25.000 and takes about 1 hour.
> From PULOGADUNG bus terminal

http://www.lonelyplanet.com/worldguide/destinations/asia/indonesia/
Another way to Semarang is via Denpasar, Bali:
1. Take the airplane from Denpasar to Surabaya. 2. Take a taxi to the railway station of Surabaya (you should pay a toll for the taxi driver). 3. Take a train to Semarang. There are only two trains in a day. 4. Take a taxi to PKBI office.
We recommend you to take the morning train rather than the night one because it is much more convenient to get a
taxi then.
PS. PLEASE TAKE TARE OF YOUR OWN LUGGAGE, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU ARRIVE IN ANY AIRPORTS, TRAIN STATIONS,
OR BUS TERMINALS IN INDONESIA, OTHERWISE, THE INDONESIAN PORTERS WILL EXPECT SOME MONEY/ EXTRA TIPS
FROM YOU. IN CASE YOU NEED A PORTER, PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU GIVE THE TIPS NOT MORE THAN 1 USD.
