I am a 42-year-old business man, having a busy schedule. Last year, I was diagnosed as having diabetes after a Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT) and I was prescribed some diabetes medicines. I continued the medicines for three months only. For the past six months I am not taking any medicines for diabetes. Now I am feeling very much tired and get exhausted very easily. My family doctor suggested me to for GTT again to test my diabetes status. Can I do the GTT again or can I start the previous antidiabetes medicines without GTT?

Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT) is a stress test to your pancreas. In GTT, we use heavy load of glucose to assess the capability of your pancreas to control sugar by secreting insulin. By doing repeated GTT you are inducing more stress to the pancreas. In a known pre-diabetes patient, repeated GTT can induce full blown diabetes. GTT is usually done to detect the diabetes status. Once a patient has been detected as having Type 2 diabetes, he is a lifelong diabetes patient, but he can be manage it without medicines.. GTT can be repeated for non-diabetic persons to assess diabetes status. So do not do GTT again, since you are a pre-diabetes patient. Regarding starting the same old prescription, it is always better to know the diabetes status, before initiating medicines. Do fasting blood sugar and postprandial blood sugar levels and consult your doctor for antidiabetes medicines. Always keep fasting blood sugar within the range of 90- 120 mgs%, postprandial blood sugar 140 -160 mgs% and HbA1c less than 7%.
