T he main purpose of the VTCT Level 1 Extended certificate in Hair and Beauty Skills (VRQ) is to prepare you to progress to the next level of vocational learning. All the units in this qualification directly prepare you for further study in the hair and beauty sector.
This qualification includes all the required elements to develop your practical hair and beauty skills including a mandatory unit in Create a hair and beauty image using colour.
You will also have the opportunity to develop your understanding and skills further by selecting optional units including: Hand and nail care, Foot and toenail care, Make-up application, Skincare, Nail art, Face painting, Blow-drying hair, Winding skills, Shampooing and conditioning hair, Plaiting hair, Colouring hair using temporary colour.

Know how to create a hair and beauty image using colour
Describe the skills and techniques you can use to create your image using colour
Hairdressing:
Curling – to create body and waves, can be used to help keep the hair up-style in place. Curls can be created using tongs, wand, rollers or straighteners.
Straightening – to make the hair straight and control and flatten styles.
Up-style – to create elegant or structured messy styles with or without height, add shape and definition to hair.
To add colour to the image the following can be used – flowers, brooches, scarves, hats, gloves, clothes, shoes, handbag, feathers etc.
Beauty:
Make-up application – emphasises the eyes, matches eye colour, enhances lips and cheekbones and can be used to complement an outfit. Disguise features, conceals spots, redness and shadows under the eyes.
Nail care – create shape to the free edge, add colour to the nail plate to complement the image.

Research in magazines, on the internet and in books to identify your chosen hair and beauty image:
Identify how you will use colour in your final look – temporary colour, nail colour, make-up colour, colour of accessories.
Mood board – an arrangement of images, materials, pieces of text, etc. intended to propose or project a particular style or idea.
Tools – pictures, magazines, photographs, books, board, glue, scissors, drawing pencils, internet, swatches.

What you must learnPrepare yourself, your model and your work area
Prepare yourself: Clean clothes, clean shoes, minimal jewellery and piercings, clean hair, light day make-up, clean teeth and fresh breath, clean nails.
Prepare your model: Remove your model’s outer clothing to protect against damage, use a clean gown and towel, ensure they are relaxed and comfortable, be aware of jewellery and remove if necessary (to avoid damage to jewellery and skin).
Prepare your work area: Clean and hygienic, good lighting and ventilation, covering for a table or trolley, jar with sterilising fluid, tools and equipment in a safe working position.
Prepare products, tools and equipment:
Products – shampoo, conditioner, styling products (blow dry lotion/mousse), finishing products (hair spray, serum etc.), cleanser, toner, moisturiser, make-up, base coat, top coat, nail varnish, nail jewels and glue, temporary colour, e.g. coloured setting lotions, hair chalk, coloured mousse, coloured spray and gels.
Tools – hairdryer, a variety of brushes (e.g. flat, round), a variety of combs (e.g. straight, tail, wide tooth), straighteners, curling tongs/wavers, rollers, hair grips, hair bands/accessories, facial sponges, cotton wool and cotton wool covered orangewood sticks or cotton buds, tissues, make-up brushes (e.g. blusher brush), foundation brush and brush cleanser.
Equipment – headband, towel, cape, stool or chair, trolley/work surface, bin with liner, bowl, brush, mirror, appropriate PPE e.g. apron, gloves.
Additional equipment/accessories – e.g. clothing, jewellery, hats, feather boas, hair accessories, such as flowers, fascinators or glitter strands or any other items to create the planned image.
Communicate effectively and responsibly with others
Communication:
Verbal – clear speech, use an acceptable volume, tone and pace, discuss appropriate topics, use appropriate language.
Non-verbal – open body language, positive attitude, friendly facial expressions, eye contact, smiling, nodding and open hand gestures. Be patient and listen to others.
Visual – use your mood board to explain to your model the look that will be created.
Behave professionally in the salon: Follow health and safety rules at all times. Sensible behaviour e.g. no running or putting yourself or others at risk.

Having practised each technique, make sure you use your mood board to help you achieve your final look:
Work directly from your mood board to create your planned image.
Make-up, nail colour, temporary colour and accessories can be included.
Use your poster to stay on track and to avoid forgetting anything.
Keep to the plan.
Present your finished look: Presentation software, collage, poster, leaflet.
