1. Passive Input jack-Ifyourbassguitarhaspassivecircuitry,connectittotheModel2500here.Thisstandard,1/4”unbalancedjackprovidesahighimpedance(100kOhms)inputsensitivityof20millivolts.
2. Active Input jack-Ifyourbassguitarhasactivecircuitry,*connectittotheModel2500here.Thisstandard,1/4”unbalancedjackprovidesahighimpedance(100kOhms)inputsensitivityof60millivolts.
3. Pre-Amp A (Tube Emulation) control-Thisdeterminestheamountofpreamplificationbeingprovidedbyspecialcircuitrywhichdeliversthesoundofaclassictubeamplifier.NotethatwhenbothPre-Ampknobsareusedatequalsettings,theamplifierwillbetwiceasloudaswhenonlyoneisused.AvoidsettingbothPre-Ampknobsonmaximum(“10”),sincetheresultwillalmostalwaysbeundesirabledistortion.
4. WARNING: Hartke amplifiers can deliver very high power levels. Driven to full power, they can damage connected loudspeakers, regardless of brand, size, or configuration. Care should be taken not to strain connected loudspeakers as this can cause permanent damage and will degrade the performance of the entire system. If you see connected loudspeakers moving excessively, turn your sys-tem down immediately or use the equalization and/or compression controls to reduce the amount of subharmonic (extremely low frequency) signal.
SettingupyourHartkeSystemsVX2515/VX2510BassAmplifierisasimpleprocedurewhichtakesonlyafewminutes:
1.Removeallpackingmaterials(savethemincaseofneedforfutureservice)anddecidewheretheamplifieristobephysicallyplaced.Toavoidpotentialoverheatingproblems,besurethattherearpanelisunobstructedandthatthereisgoodventila-tionaroundtheentireunit,particularlybehindtherear-panelfan.
2.Locatetheincludedcasters,whicharepackedseparatelyintheshippingcarton,andfollowtheinstallationinstructionsoutlinedinAppendixAonpage13ofthismanual.
3.Next,connectthe3-pinACplugintoanygroundedACsocket.Don’tturntheamplifieronjustyet,though.
4.Useastandardmusicinstrumentcabletoconnectyourbasstotheappropri-ateInputjackonthefrontpanel(ifyourbasshasactivecircuitry,*connectittothe“Active”input;ifnot,connectittothe“Passive”input).OnthefrontpaneloftheModelVX2515/VX2510,settheMastervolumecontrolto“0”(fullycounterclockwise)andsetbothPre-AmpA(Tube)andB(SolidState)knobsto“5”(thetwelveo’clockposition).SettheCompressionknobtoits“Off”position(fullycounterclockwise—you’llhearaclick)andsetbothContourknobstotheircenterdetented“0”position.Finally,setthegraphicequalizerIn/Outswitchtoits“Out”position.
5.PressthefrontpanelPowerswitchinordertoturnontheamplifier.Afterapproximatelythreeseconds,you’llhearaclick,indicatingthattherelayprotectioncircuitryhascompletedcyclingandthatpowertothesystemhasbeenprovided.
6.Settheoutputofyourbasstomaximumandthen,whileplaying,slowlyturntheMastervolumecontrolupuntilthedesiredlevelisachieved.IfyouheardistortionevenatlowamplifierMastervolumesettings,backofftheoutputofyourbass(orcheckforafaultycable).

9.Next,experimentwiththeModelVX2515/VX2510graphicequalizer.Beginbysettingeachofthetensliderstotheirflat“0”centerdetentedposition.ThenpressintheIn/Outswitch(toits“In”position)sothatthegraphicequalizerisacti-vated.Finally,moveeachsliderinturnasyouplayyourbass.Formoreinforma-tion,seethe“AboutEqualization”sectiononpage13ofthismanual.Again,whenyougetagraphicequalizationsettingthatcomplementsyourinstrumentandplayingstyle,it’sagoodideatowriteitdownforfutureuse.
10.NowtryouttheModelVX2515/VX2510compressioncircuitry.ActivateitbyturningtheCompressionknobclockwisefromits“Off”position(you’llhearaclickwhenitisactivated).Asyouturntheknobclockwise,theinputsignalfromyourbassbecomesmoreandmoreseverelycompressed—you’llhearpeaksignals(suchasstringslapsandpulls)begintosoundincreasingly“squashed,”relativetothelower-levelsignalsproducedbystandardplaying.Theresultwillbeadecreaseddynamicrangebutanoveralllevelingofsignalthroughoutthefullpitchrangeofyourinstrument.Formoreinformation,seethe“AboutCompression”sectiononpage15.IntheModel2500,theCompressionLEDwilllightsteadilygreenwhennocompressionisbeingapplied,willgooutwheneversmallamountsofcompressionarebeingappliedandwillflashorlightsteadilyredwhenlimiting(severecompression)isbeingapplied.
11.Ifyou’reusinganexternalsignalprocessor,turnyourHartkeamplifieroffmomentarilyandthenconnectastandardaudiocablebetweentheEffectSendjackandyoureffectsprocessorinputandanotherstandardaudiocablebetweentheEffectReturnjackandyoureffectsprocessoroutput(ifrequired,multipleeffectsprocessorscanbedaisy-chainedtogether,outputtoinput).Thenturntheampbackonandplayyourbasswhileadjustingthecontrolsofyouroutboardeffectsprocessor(s).Forbestresults,setboththeinputandoutputgainofallconnectedeffectsprocessor(s)to0dB(unitygain),sothatthereisnoincreaseordecreaseinlevelwhethertheeffectsareswitchedinorout.

TheHartkeSystemsModel2500BassAmplifiergivesyouenormouscontrolovershapingthesoundofyourbass,usingaprocesscalledequalization.Tounderstandhowthisworks,it’simportanttoknowthateverynaturallyoccurringsoundconsistsofabroadrangeofpitches,orfrequencies,combinedtogetherinauniqueway.Thisblendiswhatgiveseverysounditsdistinctivetonalcolor.EQcontrolsallowyoutoalterasoundbyboostingorattenuatingspecificfrequencyareas—theyoperatemuchlikethebassandtreblecontrolsonyourhi-fiamp,butwithmuchgreaterpreci-sion.TheModel2500providesyouwithtwodifferentmeansforequalizingyourbasssound:
• LowPassandHighPassContourcontrolsprovide18dBofcutorboostintwobroadfrequencybands.
• AGraphicEqualizerprovides15dBofcutorboostintennarrowfrequencybands.
Normally,youwilladjustthetwoContourcontrolsbefore“fine-tuning”yourEQwiththeGraphicEqualizer.TheLowPassContourcontrolaffectsabroadbandoffrequen-cieswith100Hzasthecenterpoint;similarly,theHighPassContourcontrolaffectsabroadbandoffrequencieswith10kHzasthecenterpoint.Wheneitherisinitscen-terdetentedposition(“0”),itishavingnoeffect.Whenitismovedrightofcenter,theparticularfrequencyareaisbeingboosted;whenitismovedleftofcenter,thefre-quencyareaisbeingcut(“attenuated”).Becausethereisverylittlebassguitarenergyat10kHz,theHighPassContourcontrolshouldbethoughtofasyouroverall“noise”control—turningitdown(totheleftofthe“0”position)willhelptoeradicatehissandbuzzwhilehavingverylittleeffectonthebassguitarsignal.Similarly,theLowPassContourcontrol,whensetleftof0,canbeusedtoeliminaterumbleand“woofiness.”
Theten-bandgraphicequalizerprovidestensliders,eachcorrespondingtoasinglenarrowfrequencyband(at30Hz,64Hz,125Hz,250Hz,500Hz,1kHz,2kHz,3kHz,5kHz,and8kHz).Thisallowsyouto“draw”thedesiredtonalresponseofyoursystem.Whenasliderisinitscenterdetentedposition(“0”),itishavingnoeffect.Whenitismovedabovecenter(towards“+15”),theparticularfrequencyareaisbeingboosted;whenitismovedbelowcenter(towards“-15”),thefrequencyareaisbeingattenu-ated.Wecarefullyselectedthesefrequencyareasbecausetheyhavemaximumimpactonbasssignals.Forexample,thelowestslider(30Hz)affectstheverylowestaudiblefrequencies(infact,mosthumanscannothearbelow20Hz),whilethehigh-estfoursliders(2,3,5,and8kHz)affectsthe“twang”ofabassstring.
WARNING: Use caution when raising the 30 Hz slider above 0 if you are operating at high volume levels (especially if Compression is not being used) since this can place undue stress on connected loudspeakers.

Tofindouthoweachgraphicequalizerslideraffectsthesoundofyourparticularbass,startwithalltenbandsflat(thatis,alltenslidersattheirdetented“0”centerposition).Then,onebyone,raiseandlowereachslider,listeningcarefullytotheeffectofeach.Ifyoudon’tspecificallyneedtoutilizetheten-bandgraphicequaliz-er,bypassitbysettingtheIn/Outswitchtoits“Out”position.Alternatively,youcanpresetacustomgraphicequalizationcurve(forexample,forafeaturesolo)andacti-vateitsimplybypressingtheswitchwhenneeded.NotethatturningallEQcon-trolsupthesameamountwillhavevirtuallythesameeffectassimplyturninguptheMasterVolume;conversely,turningthemalldownthesameamountwillhavevirtuallythesameeffectasturningdowntheMasterVolume.Bothapproachesarepointless(afterall,that’swhywegaveyouaMasterVolumecontrol!)
Inmanyinstances,thebestwaytodealwithequalizationistothinkintermsofwhichfrequencyareasyouneedtoattenuate,asopposedtowhichonesyouneedtoboost.Beawarethatboostingafrequencyareaalsohastheeffectofboostingtheoverallsignal;specifically,toomuchlowfrequencyEQboostcanactuallycauseoverloaddistortionorevenharmaconnectedspeaker,thoughtheModel2500’scompressioncircuitry—ifon—willacttosomeextenttopreventthisfromoccur-ring.Ingeneral,ifyou’regoingtoapplyafairamountoflowfrequencyEQboost,it’sagoodideatokeepCompressionon,ifonlytoprotectyourspeakersfrompotentialdamage.
ThespecificEQyouwillapplytoyourbasssignalisverymuchdependentuponyourparticularinstrumentandpersonaltasteandplayingstyle.However,hereareafewgeneralsuggestions:
• Forthatsuper-deepreggaeorMotownsound,boostlowfrequenciesslightlywhileattenuatingthehighestones(leavemid-rangefrequenciesflatorslightlyattenuated),asshownintheillustrationontheright.
• Toremoveboxinessandmakeyourinstrumentsoundmore“hi-fi,”tryattenuatingmid-rangefrequencieswhileleavinglowandhighfrequencysettingsflat,asshownintheillustrationontheright.
• Foratwangy,cuttingsound,tryboostingthehighandhighmid-rangefrequencies,asshownintheillustrationontheright(puttingnewround-woundstringsonyourbasswillhelpalotalso!)
• WheneveryougetareallygoodEQsettingforaparticularinstrumentorsong,writeitdown(you’dbeamazedhoweasyitistoforgetthesethings!).
Finally,asyouexperimentwiththeEQcontrolsoftheModel2500,don’tforgetthatyourbassalsoprovidesEQcontrolsintheformofitstonalsettings—thiscanbeparticularlyeffectiveininstrumentsthathaveactivecircuitry.Also,tryvariousEQsettingswithdifferentPre-AmpblendsandwithandwithoutCompression.Formoreinformation,seethe“AboutCompression”sectiononthefollowingpage.

Thedynamicrangeofasoundisthedifferencebetweenitsloudestandsoftestpoints.Forexample,asyouplayyourbass,you’llprobablyfindthatsomenotes(forexample,notesplayedontheupperfretsoftheloweststring)areconsiderablylouderthanothers.ThefunctionoftheCompressioncircuitryintheModel2500BassAmplifieristoreduceoveralldynamicrangebyautomaticallyreducingtheleveloftheloudestsoundsyouplaysothattheyarecloserinleveltosofterones—theendresultisthatthesound“evensout”andallnotesplayedhaveprettymuchthesamelevel.
Thefront-panelCompressioncontroldeterminestheamountofcompression(peaksignalreduction)bysimultaneouslyadjustingboththresholdandcompressionratio(whichrangesfrom2:1toinfinity[limiting]).Atthefullycounterclockwise“Off”posi-tion,thecircuitryisbypassedandnocompressionisapplied(theknobclickswhensettothe“Off”position).Astheknobisraisedclockwise(atsettingsfrom“1”to“∞”)increasingamountsofcompressionisapplied.Atthehighestsettings,loudsoundswillnotjustbecompressed,butlimited,wheretheoutputremainsvirtuallyconstantregardlessofinput.
TheModel2500providesafront-panelCompressionLEDwhichactsasausefulvisualindicatorofthecontinuousactivityofthecompressioncircuitry.Whenlitsteadilygreen(forexample,whentheCompressionknobissetto“Off”),nocompressionisbeingapplied.Whenunlit,compressionisbeingappliedtotheincomingsignalataratioofapproximately2:1.Whenflashingred,thecompressionratioisapproach-inginfinity(limitingisbeingapplied).Whenlitsteadilyred,thesignalisbeinglimited.ThisLED“follows”theincomingsignal,changingcontinuouslyasdifferentamountsofcompressionand/orlimitingarebeingapplied.
Compressionhasthreemainuses.First,asjustdescribed,it“evens”outthenotesplayedbyyourbasssothattheyallappearatvirtuallyequallevel.Second,itadds“punch”toasound;sincealllevelsarenearlythesame,youcanplaywithgreaterforcewithoutworryingabouttheloudestnotesdistorting.Finally,itservestoprotectyourloudspeakersfromdamageasaresultofbrief(transient)highoutputlevels,asmightbecausedbyfinger-poppingorotherperformancetechniques.
WhetherornotyouneedtousecompressionwithyourModel2500willbeamatterofpersonaltasteandplayingstyle—experimentandseeifyouliketheeffect.Ifyouusuallyplayatlowvolumelevels,you’llfindthat,evenwiththeCompressionknobturnedup,thecompressioncircuitrymayhavenoaudibleeffect,soitmightaswellbeoff.Ingeneral,ifyoudon’tneedcompression,leaveitoff.
