Education

1987 Ph.D. in Geography, University of Colorado, Supervised by T. Nelson Caine. Dissertation:

Spatial channel controls on suspended sediment and trace metal transport in steams.

1983 M.A. in Geography, Arizona State University, Supervised by William L. Graf Thesis: Dis-

persion of copper in ephemeral stream sediments.

1978 B.Sc. in Geology, Stanford University, Graduated Phi Beta Kappa.

Employment

2001-Present Professor (2004-present), Head (2008-2011), and Associate Professor (2001-2004), De-

partment of Geography, University of Oregon. Administered department affairs. Con-

ducted research and taught classes in hydrology, fluvial geomorphology, remote sens-

ing, research methods, Yellowstone region, history of geographic thought.

2013-2018 Tykeson Dean of Arts and Sciences (2016-2018) and Interim Tykeson Dean of Arts

and Sciences (2013-2016), College of Arts and Sciences, University of Oregon. Over-

saw the operations of 42 departments and programs and approximately 1,100 faculty and

staff and 1,100 graduate employees. Within the college, I worked to: establish a strategic

vision for the unit, develop future budgets, oversee hiring and personnel decisions, estab-

lish priorities and plans for space needs, develop college branding, oversee communica-

tions to internal and external audiences, implement a first time Collective Bargaining

Agreement with faculty, coordinate activities of the central staff and academic units.

Worked with development staff and donors to promote philanthropic giving and raise

over $130M for the college. Served on the University of Oregon Senior Leadership

Team, the Academic Leadership Team (Deans’ Council), the Budget Advisory Group,

and the Space Advisory Group, and coordinated with others colleges and university units

to plan for the management and future of the university.

2011-2013 Associate Dean, Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of Oregon.

Oversaw administration of 15 departments and programs; contributed to the college

leadership team that conceived, implemented and managed college-wide programs;

oversaw summer session and evaluation of new courses, majors and minors for entire

college (2011-2012); served on university team that negotiated a new contract with the

Graduate Teaching Fellows Federation; oversaw initiation and development of college-

level programs for enhancing graduate programs (2012-2013).
